Staff Roundtable: How Are We Feeling About NCAA Football 12 Now?
Jayson Young: I'm amazed by how much better the retail version is compared to the demo. The gameplay in the demo felt so stale and boring that I stopped playing it after a few days, but the final build has me hooked to the point where I am staying up late just to play the darn thing.

There are still issues, such as the interactions between the offensive and defensive lines, the skating player movement and being unable to hit a ball-carrier while he's in the middle of an animation (not to mention this delicious bug), but unlike previous versions of NCAA, the game's shortcomings haven't killed the fun factor for me.

It's not going to reach the elite level of sports franchises until the commentary gets updated and the player movement, physics and animations become more lifelike, but it's still the first NCAA game this generation where the fun factor manages to overcome the game's flaws.

Jayson embraces NCAA Football 12, even if he does think it's flawed.

Bob Kollars: When the demo dropped, I could see so many minor improvements, and I knew these improvements would only be felt on a much greater level when the retail version found its way into my 360 tray. In my opinion, this is the best overall package EA has ever put out for a football game. A combination of slick graphics, stadium sounds, improved gameplay and a revamped Road To Glory mode have made this offering a much more in-depth experience. Gone are the days of suction blocking and tackling, and the new improvements to zone defense (while not perfect) are a huge step in the right direction. The one thing that I would love to have is a Spectator mode; I would love to have the ability to scout my next human opponent in an online dynasty in advance, and this mode would fill those needs. How cool would it be to watch the championship game live for your online dynasty -- that's a rhetorical question as we all know it would be mind-blowingly cool!

I am not claiming that NCAA 12 is a perfect game, just that it's the best offering to date in the form of college football. The CPU plays a smarter game on the field, and at times it even feels like you are actually playing another human opponent. If folks cannot find improvement and some enjoyment in this year's title, then the series is probably dead to them -- and said people should stop buying the product in the future. After devoting over a week's time, and well over 40 games, I'm more than content with my purchase.

Bob also has a strong desire to hold this year's title close to his bosom.

Caley Roark: I'm not the biggest college football fan, but I had seen enough press and information to preorder NCAA 12 pretty early. Then I played the demo. Largely, I wasn't impressed by it; it seemed to be just another EA football game, a formula that's becoming increasingly stale. Yes, it had better lighting and some ESPN overlays, but it still felt rather dull. I nearly cancelled my preorder.

But after a week and change, I am happy I didn't. The game plays much better than the demo, especially with the variety of new tackling animations. I love when a ball carrier is nearly knocked down, stumbles, then keeps going. It's refreshing to not know all of the tackling animations by heart, as has been the case with recent Madden titles.

I'm also interested in the coaching aspect of the Dynasty mode, and being a coordinator makes games a little quicker to squeeze in here and there. I suppose at some point I'll jump to a head coaching spot, but for now I'm happy controlling the offense. I've dabbled with Road to Glory, which is much improved from past versions I've played. I look forward to spending more time there. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised. I wish the commentary and presentation elements were better (it's criminal that there isn't some kind of halftime recap), but I'm having a good time so far.

Caley likes the game, but he wants more than just team-specific entrances on the presentation front.

Dustin Toms: I'm not one who gets obsessed with My Player modes, but Road to Glory has made NCAA 12 one of the best purchases I have ever made for my gaming collection.

RtG has always been the best of the My Player modes in these football titles, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it was anything super special. But with this year's improvements and position battles, I have fallen in love with my University of Washington QB (I chose a mid-level school for realistic purposes). Plus the fact that you can re-create your entire senior high school season is bringing back memories I thought I had forgotten.

But outside of RtG, NCAA 12 has impressed. With many led to believe that there was no way it could make a big enough jump from NCAA 11, the surprise of opening up a much better game is well deserved for us "unfortunate" gamers. The graphics are greatly improved and Dynasty mode has been touched up.

Like others have said, this game comes with its problems. The zone coverage is still a bit iffy, and there seems to be a strange freeze bug tied to customizing your own experience, but the game is not to the point where a patch or two can't tweak everything to where it needs to be.

Like the others, Dustin can overlook some problems because the core experience keeps bringing him back.

They were honestly a bit more positive than I expected. Nevertheless, continue to chat about all facets of the game, positive and negative. And bonus points go to the ones who are actually calm and articulate during their discussions.

And I don't even know where to start with your comment about the sandwich having a piece of gristle in every other bite. I don't know about you, but one piece of gristle would ruin the sandwich for me. And this game is chok-ful of gristle.

"Remove the gristle and you've got a fantastic sandwich?'' Well, yeah. But how much gristle has EA removed? And do you really think they'll be able to remove a large portion of it?

I've noticed over the years that you seem to be overly effusive with your praise towards EA's football titles. EA thanks you.

But I'm not going to bend over and shout "Thank you, Sir. May I have another.''
I'm not going to argue with you over what is essentially a difference of opinion. As for what you call "overly effusive praise for EA" comment, that too is your opinion but my opinion is people like you have selective memories as to what you see on here. My cons list was list for this game was longer than my pros list when I reviewed this title. And i have not hesitated to hold EAs feet to the fire to fix glitches, such as the freezing issue, fixing injuries and online dynasty bugs. Maybe, go view my thread calljng EA out on not allowing commishes to edit other players In OD.

Bottom line, I'm sorry if I'm not more hateful, vile or angry towards EA to suit you. I'm sorry I don't gnash my teeth in enough agony and lament purchasing the game. I have already got about 65 to 70 hours of play out of this game, warts and all, and that's a lot of entertainment value in my book..

Silly food analogies aside I consider this a fantastic football title in dire need of a patch for the well known major issues. If that rubs you the wrong way then sorry I ruined your day but I call them like I see em.

I believe that people who get angry if others like the game do so because they are envious that others can enjoy the game and they can't coupled with their belief that if only everyone else was as miserable and angry toward EA as they are then EA would actually step up and dramatically make over the series ala Triple Play baseball and the NHL series.

All I know is it's by far the best football title I have played since Front Page Sports Football on the PC. And I've been playing video football games since I played Realsports Football on my Atari 2600 back in the day...

Easy guy, throwing out "whiners" and "complainers" is just as bad as others calling people "EA Apologists." You aren't helping the problem. This thread has helped keep many of the complaints contained in here.

Sorry the world doesn't revolve around your love of the game. Others have legitimate gripes with the game and they have the right to know why it's like that.

You can rag on us "whiners" and "complainers" all you want, but we are trying to build a better game, plus we want to know why promised features of the game do not work like promised (You know, like the feature set printed on the back of the box).

I'm happy you enjoy it, but just because YOU do doesn't mean everyone else has to. World doesn't work that way, guy.

You can point out issues with the game in a reasonable and intelligent manner though without simply being a whiny, angry and "I'm fed up" attitude is what I think his point was. Although it may not win you points with those here who hate EA and cause them to call you an EA apologist or whatever, the truth is that it will get you taken much more seriously with actually getting problems in the game fixed in the long run..

I think I'm more upset with myself for treading into the roster glitch thread than anything else. Call me naive, but I wasn't noticing a huge difference in gameplay once I downloaded buckeye02's roster on the PS3, compared to when I used the default rosters.

Now, I'm looking for things instead of just playing the game and having fun, and I HATE that. Hopefully a patch fixes the issue and the roster guys won't have to re-input all of that data.

I'm going back to playing the game. Is it perfect? No. Is it fun? To me, yes it is.

This game could be good if this bug was fixed. I'll give you that, but right now I'm not happy with EA, and I've put the game up until it's patched.

Oh I know what you mean, honestly I think folks are seeing a lot of stuff and attributing it to the rosters and it has nothing to do with the rosters. Its just wishful thinking that the roster patch will fix ever issue with the game. Placebo effect in full force right now I do believe..

I do know last night I played a couple of games against Michigan and Illinois and in both games the QBs ran on me. This issuing Carson3s rosters on the Xbox. Now maybe without the named rosters they would have ran more, I don't know but it's not as if they never run at all. I can live with it until the patch...

# 171 mkharsh33 @ 07/24/11 12:36 AM
I appreciate both sides of the argument here...

Personally, I'm seeing terrible offensive lineman logic (noted by the video posted a few pages back those shows the offensive guards getting walked around like a tree), strong and free safeties that have TERRIBLE db logic - which allows for the slot receiver or tight end to run free in the middle of the field 90% of the time, and a known roster glitch that changes the way scrambling quarterbacks play. Not to mention that EA hasn't figured out an intelligent cpu logic for teams that run the option...

I'm glad others enjoy it. I do to a degree, but I refuse to be labeled as a fool for pointing out things that are obvious flaws. Gaming sites that are giving this game high reviews of 9's or higher should be ashamed. With these OUT OF THE BOX FLAWS, I'd give it a 7.5 (generously) out of 10. Yes, some good to it, but a LOT of bad as well. If you guys love it, great... But don't point a finger at me for simply stating the obvious...

I have expressed my views on the game in an intelligent and reasonable manner. But, just because I have a negative opinion on a game doesn't mean I should be labeled as a whiner or complainer. That's where the line is crossed, generalizations do no good.

So, I find a few things to be overly annoying and I want others to know about it to see if they experience the same thing? If not, I don't try and convince them, I move on.

I'm not sitting here trying to get those who enjoy the game to come over a "EA hate bandwagon." But, for those who like the game to sit there and pick off people who have a problem with the game, well, isn't helping the matter at all.

We are all striving toward the same goal, it's just some people are more satisfied than others.

I'm dealing with the same problems everybody's dealing with, but i'm not gonna come here and complain that the game's 'broke' i'm trading it in etc.etc.How's that productive to ea fixing the problem's?There's certain ways to go about things, but to act like that you'll never be taken seriously.

Acting like what? I'm not understanding what you are trying to say here. I'm not acting like anything, I gave my opinion and that was that. I don't have problems with people liking the game, so I think you need to back off of me a little here.

I'm not directing anything at you in particular I just feel if you want something fixed, there's a certain way you should go about it that's all, and i'll leave it at that.

LOL I think I'm just going to take a back seat to this thread because it seems brothers are turning on brothers here and that's not how it should be. We are all striving toward the same goal and I would like to think that we are doing that, collectively.

I will say this, for those who are enjoying the game, I am geniunely happy for you and I hope that continues. I will try my best to take the game for what it's worth and hope it improves to give me the same enjoyment as you're having.

If it's not fun simply move on. This is supposed to be a hobby. The second it stops being fun it's no longer a hobby. if that makes sense. Hell even if NCAA and Madden were unplayable for me, I'd still have The Show to occupy me.

6.0 out of 10 Went up 1 point from last year for the new tackling animations which look amazing. To bad everything else is the same or worse or broken. Disconnected bland commentary and environment. RTG for all the improvements looks to be about 1/4 complete. I can see why they didn't notice the roster bug, considering they always used #'s instead of names. But the freezing but is ridiculous. Do I have fun playing the game? Yea kinda, but really no MORE fun then playing Ncaa 09 or a previous years title, as its pretty much the same
