Staff Roundtable: How Are We Feeling About NCAA Football 12 Now?
Jayson Young: I'm amazed by how much better the retail version is compared to the demo. The gameplay in the demo felt so stale and boring that I stopped playing it after a few days, but the final build has me hooked to the point where I am staying up late just to play the darn thing.

There are still issues, such as the interactions between the offensive and defensive lines, the skating player movement and being unable to hit a ball-carrier while he's in the middle of an animation (not to mention this delicious bug), but unlike previous versions of NCAA, the game's shortcomings haven't killed the fun factor for me.

It's not going to reach the elite level of sports franchises until the commentary gets updated and the player movement, physics and animations become more lifelike, but it's still the first NCAA game this generation where the fun factor manages to overcome the game's flaws.

Jayson embraces NCAA Football 12, even if he does think it's flawed.

Bob Kollars: When the demo dropped, I could see so many minor improvements, and I knew these improvements would only be felt on a much greater level when the retail version found its way into my 360 tray. In my opinion, this is the best overall package EA has ever put out for a football game. A combination of slick graphics, stadium sounds, improved gameplay and a revamped Road To Glory mode have made this offering a much more in-depth experience. Gone are the days of suction blocking and tackling, and the new improvements to zone defense (while not perfect) are a huge step in the right direction. The one thing that I would love to have is a Spectator mode; I would love to have the ability to scout my next human opponent in an online dynasty in advance, and this mode would fill those needs. How cool would it be to watch the championship game live for your online dynasty -- that's a rhetorical question as we all know it would be mind-blowingly cool!

I am not claiming that NCAA 12 is a perfect game, just that it's the best offering to date in the form of college football. The CPU plays a smarter game on the field, and at times it even feels like you are actually playing another human opponent. If folks cannot find improvement and some enjoyment in this year's title, then the series is probably dead to them -- and said people should stop buying the product in the future. After devoting over a week's time, and well over 40 games, I'm more than content with my purchase.

Bob also has a strong desire to hold this year's title close to his bosom.

Caley Roark: I'm not the biggest college football fan, but I had seen enough press and information to preorder NCAA 12 pretty early. Then I played the demo. Largely, I wasn't impressed by it; it seemed to be just another EA football game, a formula that's becoming increasingly stale. Yes, it had better lighting and some ESPN overlays, but it still felt rather dull. I nearly cancelled my preorder.

But after a week and change, I am happy I didn't. The game plays much better than the demo, especially with the variety of new tackling animations. I love when a ball carrier is nearly knocked down, stumbles, then keeps going. It's refreshing to not know all of the tackling animations by heart, as has been the case with recent Madden titles.

I'm also interested in the coaching aspect of the Dynasty mode, and being a coordinator makes games a little quicker to squeeze in here and there. I suppose at some point I'll jump to a head coaching spot, but for now I'm happy controlling the offense. I've dabbled with Road to Glory, which is much improved from past versions I've played. I look forward to spending more time there. Overall, I'm pleasantly surprised. I wish the commentary and presentation elements were better (it's criminal that there isn't some kind of halftime recap), but I'm having a good time so far.

Caley likes the game, but he wants more than just team-specific entrances on the presentation front.

Dustin Toms: I'm not one who gets obsessed with My Player modes, but Road to Glory has made NCAA 12 one of the best purchases I have ever made for my gaming collection.

RtG has always been the best of the My Player modes in these football titles, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it was anything super special. But with this year's improvements and position battles, I have fallen in love with my University of Washington QB (I chose a mid-level school for realistic purposes). Plus the fact that you can re-create your entire senior high school season is bringing back memories I thought I had forgotten.

But outside of RtG, NCAA 12 has impressed. With many led to believe that there was no way it could make a big enough jump from NCAA 11, the surprise of opening up a much better game is well deserved for us "unfortunate" gamers. The graphics are greatly improved and Dynasty mode has been touched up.

Like others have said, this game comes with its problems. The zone coverage is still a bit iffy, and there seems to be a strange freeze bug tied to customizing your own experience, but the game is not to the point where a patch or two can't tweak everything to where it needs to be.

Like the others, Dustin can overlook some problems because the core experience keeps bringing him back.

They were honestly a bit more positive than I expected. Nevertheless, continue to chat about all facets of the game, positive and negative. And bonus points go to the ones who are actually calm and articulate during their discussions.

I have yet to see this happen in a game.

Me neither and I've played over 50 games. Its a glitch and must be a pretty rare one at that.

This will probably be the first year I don't buy an NCAA game since I started buying them in 2004. I was already pretty lukewarm on this game after seeing they didn't add a ton of new features in this year's game, but after reading about all the issues this game has, some features advertised not even working properly, I've pretty much made up my mind on this one. I used to get very excited for this game, even when the new features were lame like in the NCAA 10 version, I still bought it because I was a colossal football fan and thought maybe just maybe the game would eventually be great, but now I realize that this game will never be where i want it to be, so until they come out with something drastic, either on this gen or the next, I will withhold my money for a different title.

Then wait 2 weeks for Microsoft/Sony to test it to make sure it's certified and then it's released to us gamers.
Or they could've gotten it right the first time and avoided the trouble of releasing a major bug fix patch right after the game comes out.

Your choice but if you skip NCAA 12 based on what you are reading here at OS you are really missing out on a great football game. And in the future if you plan to use the forums as a gauge on a game you will find you buy very few sports games anymore. Come in here a week after just about any sports game releases and you will see the entire forum in an uproar about all sorts of issues, some legitimate, others not so much...

Its a solid game. One of NCAA's best imo as far as gameplay goes. But this roster glitch must be fixed ASAP. When it gets patched and the game still plays the same.......i dont think i'll be getting 2013. I'll just make 2012 season rosters for this game. The ability to edit players in dynasty was huge.

I have had it happen in games as well only the movie I posted was the first time it was the entire DB's body passing through my WR's body. In games I have seen arms go through heads and shoulds through shoulders and so on.

All these would be interference if the bodies actually made contact like they should because the DB would have hit the WR before the ball got there. Lets face it how many times have you passed the ball thinking your WR had position on the DB only to have the DB warp speed in front of your WR somehow. Its like body position in this game does not matter.

Also lots of times DBs are contacting your WR's downfield but they don't have illegal contact penelties in the game so you just have to deal with the fact their routes get all messed up.

You do realize in college football there is no 5 yard chuck rule though right? DB's can hit WR's all the way down the field until the ball is in the air.

I think I saw this video in another thread titled Psychic DB's. Anyway, same as Odogg and Bkrich, haven't seen this in over 50 games.

I used to see it in Madden when I hit the instant replay button several times, but I don't have time to hit replay every play to find "ghosting" issues.

Plus, I just don't see it in regular game play.

# 231 SGMRock @ 07/27/11 07:06 PM
When I get picked off or a pass gets batted down I sware should have been good I sometimes replay them. I have more time to do that as I play only offline.

Could not agree more with you on that statement, this crap makes me an angry person.

I've also seen the body part/matrix warp from the vid you posted. Also, it grinds my gears when others post and say something to the effect of "well, I've played X amount of games and I haven't seen it". So what if you haven't seen it, SGMRock has and it needs to be addressed.

So what? Because if three other people have played 150 to 200 games without seeing it then it indicates it's a very, very rare issue. You don't go hunting down and fixing every single issue in a game. In a perfect world maybe but in the real world developers have to fix bugs that affect a lot of people, not just 1% or 2% of those who buy their games.

All games have bugs and weird things happen in them, you don't go and form a patch party every time it happens.

# 234 ODogg @ 07/27/11 10:17 PM
Oh and btw - just so we're clear here, I'm not saying if *I* say I haven't seen it that it's not worthwhile of being fixed, I'm just reporting what I found. If a large portion of other people are seeing it too then by all means, it needs fixed.

That's why everyone should post in these bug threads as to whether or not they are seeing issues, both if they are seeing a problem and also if they are not. Then, and only then, can the devs get a clear picture as to whether or not something is really a wide-affecting issue and needs addressed or whether it's a random fluke.

Who said I was talking about you? Jeez...

And just because a few people with some games under their belts haven't seen it, doesn't necessarily make it rare.

It's not a game killer. It's an annoyance that gets worse every time you see it. That's all.

# 236 JalenTigh @ 07/27/11 10:28 PM
How am I feeling about NCAA 12 right about now?

I feel its got a nice spot on the used games isle if there is not a patch to fix it soon. And it will be the last NCAA I buy... Over two weeks since released and NOTHING in the way of fixes for problems that there is no possible way EA did not know about before it released the game. Some of these bugs are so obvious a 5yr old could have spotted them.

Because I fit into the group of people you were talking about, I was one of the ones who said I hadn't seen it. As for how rare it is, that's the point I was making, everyone should weigh in on issues so that the devs know how big of an issue it is, even those who aren't seeing the issue.

It's pretty obvious you were. Apparently anyone who doesn't agree with your assessment shouldn't be allowed to post.

I do not own the game but have played a handful of times at a buddies house. We have both witnessed morphing. not as bad as a whole bodies morphing but it is still there. I am not trying to be ignorant but wasn't the morphing issues something EA claimed they addressed. I may be wrong. That being said if Patches come out soon. this will be a solid game.

Of all the people in this thread, you've got no room to talk. What you just said about my one post, you do in all of yours.
