NBA 2K17 News Post

Innovation. Authenticity. Engagement.

These are the three tenets that the franchise team has been working under for the last couple of years, and it has produced some truly unique content. We have another feature set this year that will both challenge the norm and continue to drive this portion of the sports gaming industry.

The people I am fortunate enough to work with on the MyGM/MyLEAGUE team are of a different ilk. Intense…is the word I would use to describe them. To Dave Z, Tim, Brad, Barry, Leftos, Yu, and Kefei, I salute you. For everyone else out there, let’s go learn what these fine folks have created for you this year!

I’m going to write this blog a little differently than I have in the past. We covered a lot of ground this year. I want to make sure you can understand the breadth of our scope this year, so I am going to write this in more of a list format so you can quickly consume what we have been up to. Without much further ado…

I already play fantasy basketball. Offline it is once again.

Hopefully the rivalry thing works well. Sounds cool.
Man, this couldn't be farther away from the truth. It's not a matter of want, it's a matter of resources and time. We had a lot of work to do this year, and reading back through Erick's blog gives me chills. So many things we worked on months and months ago I had forgotten we had even put into the game.

We love MyLEAGUE Online, we absolutely do, which is why we didn't start with Online Association as a base last year. We wanted something awesome and stable. And this year we wanted to bring in a lot of features from the offline experience that were missing, and we absolutely had to add multi-year progression. However, when it came down to the nitty-gritty, full CBA/contract/money support would be too much work for this year. There's a lot of aspects to it, from deferred negotiation responses during the season, to all the admin tools we'd need to add to make sure the league doesn't get stuck because a user won't make a decision, to all the offseason time periods...

Now, I'm not allowed to make any promises, nor do I want to, but I just want to make it clear that when we want to get there. When that will happen, I don't know. But I know that everyone on the team wanted to get there, but for this year, we figured out something that would take a realistic amount of time to implement and that would be fun.

One aspect missing from Erick's blog is how your keepers/protected players affect your draft presence. There's two different settings on how that works:
Bottom of Draft: All your protected players occupy the bottom picks of the draft.
Overall Ranking Buckets: Your protected players occupy picks in the draft based on their overall ranking. Any top 30 player is a guaranteed 1st round pick lost. A second top 30 player protected would make you lose your 2nd round pick. A player ranked between 91-120 would be a 4th round pick lost, and so on. So there's a game there in researching who's available in the draft and deciding which rounds you're willing to give up on to protect the players that are most important to you.

Our initial default was "Bottom of Draft", but we changed it to "Overall Ranking Buckets" after our very first playtest, since it made things way more intriguing and forced you to strategize.

We sincerely hope you enjoy MyLEAGUE Online as much as we did playtesting it. And if you know the team Erick B./SimBaller assembled late in the 2K14 cycle and have been paying attention to how much MyLEAGUE and MyGM have grown since 2K15 onwards, you know we're nowhere near done.

Leftos can you shed any information on MyGM as far as player/GM interactions and how touchy morale was where players would want minutes and a better role when they didn't earn it or deserve it yet. And then when you would tell them that, they'd get upset and morale would drop. Sometimes they would want to be traded after that.

I wonder if the Rivalry feature extends to other modes (quick play, online, playoff mode, my career, etc). It would be cool if playing a match up such as GS vs Cleveland or GS vs OKC resulted in an amped up atmosphere whether a quick play game, online game, my career, my league, etc.

Initial and Offseason Draft keeper years are admin settings [Random, 2 Years, 3 Years]. Like the blog says, Rookies get a variable number of extra keeper years [0-25, although the 25 seems like a typo now that I look at it, heh!) over normal players that can act as motivation to draft rookies and develop them rather than worry about losing them right as they're reaching their peak.

The rivalry feature was developed by the Features team in coordination with the Presentation team and has been added into the core of the game, so it's mode independent. We have a 30v30 table of rivalry scores for quick game that we can update throughout the year, and modes that are based on the franchise backend (MyLEAGUE/MyGM/MyCAREER and derivatives such as Playoff mode) will trigger the 20+ events that affect rivalry scores dynamically.

well good thing i do not play online that free agent draft thing sounds like a bummer for you guys, but once again 2k does a great job building the franchise mode to be the best in sports gaming, really hope they omprove the CAP next year.

The Advanced Rotations feature has been added to the Gameplan feature in Franchise, which means you can setup advanced rotations against any opponent.

That said, both Advanced Rotations and Roster Quick Edit were features that were very mind-stretching and took a lot of iterations to get the interface to where we wanted it, so please, share as much feedback as possible on how we can make those easier to use and/or better.

I actually think that MLO free agency seems pretty cool. It'll come down to "Do I was 33 year old Westbrook on the decline who is still an 84, or should I take this 21 year old rook who could become an 84... or possibly not improve much at all"

Do you have any extreme examples to share? Players, just like in real life, have different personalities and expectations, independent of whether they actually deserve it. It's a matter of player ego and other personality factors. Our conversations branch based on that related to the player's playing time and rotational position, so all other things being equal, players will have different expectations as to their playing time, their role, the training intensity, and so on.

Also, like we've said, there's players that respond well to tough love, and others that need to be coddled. If you know their personalities, you can reject their requests and make them respect your decision, rather than have them mouth off to the press about how they don't want to be on your team anymore.

Leftos, if you're playing a 30 team MyLeague offline does the CPU now turn down trades or do you have to decide if it's fair yourself?

This was a GREAT read. Really excited to get my hands on 2K17. I noticed injuries were mentioned in the MyLeague Online portion but I was wondering have injuries returned all around? In-game injuries not just injuries that occur during simulation. I hated having healthy players all season long in MyGM/MyLeague while the CPU constantly had to deal with injuries.

# 54 InRodWeTrust @ 09/09/16 03:20 PM
I'm ridiculously excited for MyLeague especially with the new all time stat tracking. It gives incentives to playing longer.

Mylg online edit player feature? Is this dynamic rosters? Or does that mean the an admin has to edit players 1 at a time to update rosters?

Thanks for answering questions leftos.

Leftos, thanks for the clarification on the MLO stuff. Also, kick*ss job by you and the devs this year -- you guys really brought the bar up (way up) from 2K16 and I didn't expect this big a leap in one year; I thought 2K18 would have had a majority of the features laid out already.

While you're here, can you shed some light on how many uniform slots expansion/relocated teams get this year? Are we limited to just two and, if we are, will the team scheme uploads/downloads be a way we can quickly swap out uniforms only without changing the rest of our brand?

# 57 bigmike0077 @ 09/09/16 03:21 PM
LEFTOS! can you answer a question ive asked a few times but has been overlooked in all the hype lol

1) How does the expansion work? Expansion Draft, Entry Draft, Season Starts? or Just an expansion draft?

2) will we see in game injuries this year? last year it was almost absent

3) For MyGm, can we still edit draft classes etc, or are some things only for myleague?

# 58 lvnba @ 09/09/16 03:21 PM
Leftos, thanks for your explanation about MLO, it is tremendously appreciated.

Will advanced rotations be part of the MLO game plan?

Really proud of our entire team.

This mode truly blows me away when I start getting the nuggets of information about what they do year to year. Looking forward to seeing all your thoughts on it.
