NBA 2K16 News Post

After watching the NBA 2K16 gameplay enhancements video, make sure you read the gameplay blog, written by Mike Wang, Gameplay Director for NBA 2K16.

Hey 2K fans! It’s time to talk gameplay! It’s been a whirlwind year for us and the game has seen a ton of improvements. In fact, it’s tough to even name an area of the oncourt experience that didn’t get upgraded in one way or another. We’ve been playing the game til our fingers bleed and loving every minute of it. There’s a lot to cover so let’s jump right in.

First off, I want to congratulate and thank the gameplay team. This is the hardest working group of guys in the industry with an insatiable drive to be the best. No one has ever said, “ehh… that’s good enough.” We’re our own biggest critics and it’s cool to work with a team of guys who constantly strive to outperform themselves and genuinely love the game of basketball.

Like I said, there’s a lot to cover, way too much to write about in just one blog, so I’m going to try and highlight some of the things we’re proudest of in NBA 2K16.

Wow man

If these things work out with minimal bugs this game is going to be crazy.

This gameplay blog sounded like a personal wishlist of everything I wanted touched from a strictly gameplay standpoint. They had me at physics long rebounds but they threw in so much more woww.

They have almost every complaint/request I ever heard captured in this gameplay blog from various posters of this forum man so they are reading these forums and cooking up a nice game.

Will there be upgrades to historic players also?

I was just thinking about this. Hopefully alot of these new gameplay physics, A.I. upgrades and other stuff carries over to the historic players also.

What does tracking rebounds and blocks mean ?

Not sure if I like the new passing controls

Other than that it seems good.

Just hope they work on crossovers in traffic not being dribbled off the defenders foot. And double teams resulting in passes going 10 feet over the players head.

All signs are pointing to this being the GOAT 2K.

Edit: I haven't read the blog yet, so I don't know if this is addressed or not.

I think you are right like you I am a heavy Icon pass user I don't see a good way to icon pass bounce pass based off what they released because the controls are the same. They will have to release advanced controls if possible

Now I am officially hyped. I cannot wait to get my hands on this game. If the game plays as good as it sounds 2k16 will be stuck in my ps4 for a long while. It's going to be a long 3 weeks.

And to think about 2 weeks ago there were people here saying things like "2k's taking it easy this year", "this is just going to be 2k15.5", "looks like the same game". Id love to see their reaction now.

I'm ready. Just give me my 2001 Sixers w/ Eric Snow and Larry Brown, and leave. Me. Alone [emoji23]

I respect Mike Wang as if he was my sensei. I copied every single word in his blog. I'm so proud, much kudos to the 2k team. Can't wait for the respective sim blog coming soon.

Well this all sounds absolutely amazing and now I'm at the point where I need to play a basketball game but 15 just will not do. Thanks 2K

Seems like playing as a big will be rewarding again, especially when it comes to impacting a game with defense and boards.

Now I just gotta hope all these things work as well as they sound and let me play defense just as good, if not better, than on offense like I used to be able to.

I will say this though, I have a feeling that passing is going to be a letdown again. I don't see anything truly new in that description other than the holding of buttons to call for players to move and to pass when letting go. There's still no (mention of):
- a button for chest pass
- a jumping overhead pass (many players do this to avoid interception)
- a pass around the side (decide which side you want to pass)
- a touch pass or ability to decide the speed of the pass

Well done on the other things though, I have a feeling rebounding, blocking shots, moving around (off the ball), late game situations, play calling are just going to be so much more realistic and useful this year.

Is flick flick like that Curry quick release floater, so deciding when to let that go?
Did you read this sometimes it is not about control but the logic behind it and if they improved that along with speed things should definitely be better.

Quote:
Loads of passing improvements: faster ball speeds, better pass animation selection, completely re-written pass lane selection, ability to immediately break out of catches, step in catches around the rim, step out catches when crowded, less sliding on standing catches, boat loads of new content, and much much more. We’ve even added a new option to allow you to pick what’s most important when using directional passing. So you can go with the default tuning or you can bias it more toward stick direction or receiver openness.
Flick flick moves are moves that involved moving the shot stick twice like up and unders and moves in the pivot. Mike Wang has called them that since at least 2K11.

So it sounds like we can do way more flick flick moves and have control over the move.

Non of this means anything unless we see it for ourselves.

Remember when they said " Dynamic hairstyles, new hairstyles released with roster updates for current players"

Never happened, one of many things 2k just says. Not to be a debby downer but I have to see to believe.

It's almost every year the game goes down the toilet with so much BS.

Mike Wang said the game is going to be "FUN", I highly doubt it'll be just as fun as their competitor. Also, whats up with these guys not releasing a demo? That's very upsetting.
So much pessimism from someone that didn't even buy the game last year. Why not play the game for yourself and develop your own opinion Instead of going off the negativity you saw online. While 2k15 had its issues it was still a good game gameplay wise.

I don't know how you can reference the idea that 2K's games go "down the toilet" each year but ignore the fact that the competitor's game has been an incomplete product the last 2 years. Yet some how you know the competitor's game will be more fun. SMH

While I am also disappointed with the lack of a demo this has become a trend this generation. Many games aren't receiving demos. The Show didn't and, as far as I know, it is a great game. Madden didn't receive a demo and it is easily the best Madden I've played. A lack of a demo is no longer an indication of a games quality.

All the gameplay stuff I believe but when it comes to art....lol your fault for falling for that...

The whole forum already knows what the art team is capable(not) of...

I feel bad for the guys here expecting the legends to get facial upgrades. The Euro players won't get touched as well....it's just the way the art team rolls. LD2k says it's because of facial scanning but that's bull since last gen legends where modelled really well without the use of scanning.

Now I've asked this on the wishlist for Beds to have control on facial hair and hair and not depend on the art team. It would be awesome if he had such control.....

"Layup strips have been improved and are a much more reliable counter against guys going to the rim"

LOL people gonna be mad about this. This is basically my defacto defensive strategy.

They literally worked on everything I've been asking for!

"Foot planting was also re-written from the ground up inside the new engine, this time using sophisticated toe/heel detection, blending techniques and IK (inverse kinematics.) The new foot planting does a great job of making players feel more grounded to the world when cutting, planting or pivoting. However, the thing I love most about it is that it’s not just an aesthetic improvement. Because players aren’t able to cheat physics by sliding or radically shifting momentum it allows the flow of basketball to play out in a more natural fashion."

This was music to my ears! I love everything I just read! Can't wait for this game! 2K never disappoints with their effort! 2K16 will go down as an All time classic!

Reading those passing controls already in the game though, I already feel slightly overwhelmed. Plus, as someone else said, it goes to icon passing usually anyway. It's cool there's a slider there now for whether you want accuracy of stick direction or openness but I still can't see myself going away from icon passing and thus missing out on the passing controls anyway (but it's still awesome they're adding in oodles of new animations and improvements to passing).

As for the post game:

I'm happy the 2K team is always ready to change things if they think it's needed, but I still get a chuckle out of the fact that the post play controls have changed again. It's just one of those things they can never settle on, but they'll keep trying to find that thing that works.

I'm still holding out some level of hope for the legends to get some love in terms of player model accuracy. Since the 2013 Miami Heat are in I'm hoping for a slightly different LeBron player model along with the 25th season patch on their jerseys. Also obviously Jordan and the retro Bulls need love as well as the new classic teams like 2001 Lakers. Hopefully they have an entirely different Fro-be player model than the 98 model that's been in for years.

Ewwwww. I actually feel like layup strips are already sort of overpowered, especially on breakaways. I feel like winning the war at the point of attack is what you should be trying to do -- and where the improvements should be made first -- as once you get past someone reaching back in for a strip is such a high-risk, low-reward play much of the time.

# 59 fatboirob @ 09/02/15 02:59 PM
So on rim grazers, you’ll see the rim breakaway very slightly if at all. While monster rim hangs will show the basket and stanchion getting pulled down and snapping back up when the player lets go. Dunks that hit the side of the rim will cause the basket support to sway laterally and so on. And a quick side note on dunks, we’ve improved the ability of bigs to dunk from a stand when operating deep in the paint. So it feels amazing to shake a guy in the post or come down with an offensive board and finish with authority like a big should.

This news about the the rim reaction to dunks got me hyped!

All great stuff! Now on deck is czar and OG with coaching, playbooks, etc. this will be a long 7 days til that blog gets out.

And I've said before but I really appreciate and love that the dev blogs made a return! I feel more hyped for this game over the last 2 blogs than I have in years.
