AI QB awareness could be better. AI shotgun running awareness needs to be better.
Running game feels like it could use a little polish. It feels like it's missing something.
For those struggling with PA, are you sliding protection? I found this works wonders for me.
Overall, not bad. Not great, but no game killers obvious in demo. I like that they can tune the demo and then release a decent first day patch based off of reaction.
It's too early to get panties in a bunch. Besides, it's a demo right now.
Yep...it's a complete waste of development cycles working on team intros and presentation in general IMO. Yeah it's neat to watch once but after you see it 99.9% of everyone skips through them....I never understood why people get amp'd about them. What boggles my mind is they work on presentation stuff that is static and never changes yet they could be giving us stat wipes and other information "on screen" that is dynamic during the game that is unique to every single game that would be far more entertaining and informative and would actually draw you into the game more. It would probably be easier to develop as well...but no...if you want that kind of info you have to hit pause and dig through clunky menus....but in general, teams intro's and "3D grass" are two things I'll go to my grave not understanding why people get jazzed about (Oh and "dreads"...I mean who really gives a f%^k?).
I agree for the most part. I feel that these intros are "bells and whistles" that get added to the game once you get comfortable and confident in the meat of your game. However, the meat of NCAA still needs a good bit of work. I think those resources could be better spent elsewhere, improving the majority of the game (i.e. gameplay & presentation DURING the game) rather than adding somewhat "gimmicky" things to cater to the casual crowd--the latter of which NCAA has been famous for this generation.
I would personally like to see NCAA do more for the year-to-year fan rather than the first-year casual drop-in.
Just played a game on varsity setting. I have to say I was impressed. CPU still established a run game, but I was able to get a lot of pressure on the QB, after a few hits it really took its toll on him. I sacked the QB 6 times and didn't have any of the 2 yard incompletions The CPU QB had several overthrows in a row and it really disrupted his timing. Bye the way I was Florida State playing Alabama.
I still dislike the grass, on some replays its so blurry and makes the screen flicker beyond enjoyment.
My biggest complaints are the very blocky font for the player numbers, the play art needs to be more transparent and the 3D grass on replays at times can be too much.
Note: on some replays the grass is fine on others it is just to blurry and really messes up the viewing experience.
Ok I've played through like 6-7 games on this demo already. I've been playing on All-American mode and have a mixed opinion on the demo.
Defensively...much improved. Zone D is working better, getting pressure on the QB(Both by myself and CPU), turnovers are here and there, but not too many and not too few. I am dominating on D....I've given up 17 points total so far.
This brings me to my beef so far and it might totally be me sucking for whatever reason on this demo. Guys, I cannot score! After the first game or two it was cute, but I've scored 4 FOUR touchdowns in the 7 games I've played so far. I've went 4-3 in those games with wins of 3-0, 6-0, 9-3, 14-0. I've lost games 2-0(LOL), 10-7, and 14-6(One of these was a pick 6).
So, for whatever reason...on the demo I have, I cannot put together touchdown drives. I'm frustrated a bit but at the same time somewhat excited because they are only 2 minute quarters and D looks a lot better. That said, a lot of you are putting up 20-30 points in some games. I have not come close to one of these...very strange. I'm not the GOAT but by no means the WOAT at this game. 14 points being my high after 7 games is a little disturbing but not a huge deal so far. Maybe I'm not use to the speed it's set on? Thoughts? I've read some say they do not like it.
Also, a couple of random things.
The CPU did not use any of its 3 TO's with a minute plus to go in a 0-0 tie and allowed me to run down the clock and kick field goal with no time left to win it. Poor clock management by the CPU.
Had Bama run the ball on 4th and 1 with 6 seconds left...get tackled with 1 second left and somehow spike it and no time run off? Is that possible in real life? I think a second should have ran off...ending the game. They failed on a hail mary so its all good.
I've seen CPU scrambling, mainly Manuel for FSU, who burned me for a FIFTY-THREE yard TD!!! I've seen Bama's QB tuck and run a couple times, but only had Thomas do it twice in 2 games against Oregon so far. A little disappointing there. Texas QB is just bad all around.
Fatigue is disappointing. I run on first and 10 with Thomas and get out of bounds for 5 yard and I'm dead RED in fatigue...he proceeds to miss 3 wide open WR's on the next 3 downs badly, including overthrowing one by 10 yards for an INT on 4th and 5. One play would not tire Thomas out in real life...geeze EA, come on.
I downloaded the demo on 360 and PS3 and thought 360 had a slight edge in certain areas but thought both looked great other than the in game grass which just looks terrible on both systems. The 3D grass in the replays is a nice touch although there are other things I wish they would work on instead of making the game pretty in replays like in game stats and the commentary desperatly needs an overhaul just to name a couple.
I played a couple games on varsity just to get warmed up get a feel for the game. After that I played a few games on Heisman. I beat Oregon in a squeaker 3-0 and Alabama owned me 14-0. Their O-line mowed FSU's D-line down pretty handily and I couldn't generate much offense with FSU until the last drive where I got the ball to the goalline but I ran out of time.
The Alabama and FSU matchup as others have said did seem to be a later build and looked a little better in game and on the replays and cutscenes.
Overall I really enjoyed the demo on both systems and can't wait for the FINAL PRODUCT on July 12th.
I finally got to do that diving catch animation a couple of times last night. Basically it is the same diving catch animation Madden 11 has.
One of them I did was between the CB and SS for a TD. Kind of weird how both of them were on both sides of me running step for step. Only thing was I dove for it and they didn't, but yet their bodies warped forward standing where I landed.
I've enjoyed reading the majority of impressions. I don't chime in too much around here, but I figured I'd add a few my of own thoughts. Playing PS3 version.
-I agree with the grass not looking quite right. The field looks fantastic during the majority of replays, but during regular gameplay something just seems.."off." I'm wondering if this is due to a conflict with the new lighting system. Didn't that conflict with the jerseys getting dirty last year?
-I'm wondering if it's conflicting with the jerseys getting dirty THIS year. Yes I know the demo is only 2 minute quarters, but I haven't seen a bit of degradation. I'm really hoping that this doesn't have to be patched in this year.
-I'm too used to hit sticking tackles and find myself whiffing on quite a few opportunities to bring the ball carrier down. I'm enjoying that.
-Return system is greatly improved from '11. Still not perfect, but much improved. I'm surprised at how much this little element has contributed to my enjoyment of the game. No longer does every drive start somewhere between my own 10 and 30 yard line.
-Has anyone seen the CPU QB attempt any deep balls? I've played 7 games and can't recall the CPU attempting any long passes. It's all been dink and dunk. (Sorry if this has been brought up)
-There are more stat overlays it seems, but there should still be more. Very much enjoy the transition between quarters and halves. The replays and gametracks will add some longevity to the game.
-Dreadlocks...just..look bad in my opinion. I guess I'm glad they're in for variety.
-I feel it plays faster than NCAA 11. I think this will ultimately be a good thing.
-WHY WAS PLAY SELECTION CHANGED? Ok, I know this isn't a big deal, but man that is going to be tough to get used to for the first few days of gameplay. Left and Right is now Up and Down and vice versae.
Overall, I'm hoping the first tuner released based on impression shores up a bit of the demo's shortcomings. There are some things (CPU attempting 60 yard fg's, etc...) that were helped out by the last set of tuners and patches from NCAA 11, so I don't quite understand why they're rearing their head in NCAA 12. Shouldn't they have already been removed from the game during it's production..since they were taken out of NCAA 11? Oh well, no big deal, as long as it's ironed out in the end.
If you liked the way NCAA 11 played, you'll like NCAA 12. I hate to say same ole song and dance because I haven't played the finished product yet, but there's nothing that is going to wow you (my opinion.) It's improved slightly in areas already discussed to death in this thread. I'll be buying on release day, and I expect to get just as much enjoyment out of 12 as I did NCAA. Actually, probably more due to the new CC. Hopefully RTG will add to the experience too.
Is there anyway we can start a separate "I hate EA/They Don't Try/Dreadlocks suck/I hate Grass/This looks like a Super Nintendo Game/Convince me to buy this" Thread?
I feel if we could do that it would be much easier for me to navigate in this thread and see the 1 in 20 posts that doesn't relate to those topics listed above.
Alright. I was able to get in 3 games this morning before I left for work. (PS3)
I played one game on Varsity and 2 on AA.
My overall impression on this bare bones 2 minute a quarter demo (which is = to one quarter of play for me) is we have a much more refined NCAA 11. I loved NCAA 11 big time and I was a little nervous after I traded it in early to take advantage of the nice credit and Gamestops strong trade in offer at the time. My slight fears are gone. It is exactly what I expected on the field.
1) Tackling is 100% better. It feels great and looks really good. I saw many tackles where I was hit on my pad and i stumbled and then got cleaned up by another player. I did see some gang tackles that looked great. Wrap up tackles. Really they did a great tuning job on making this new collision system work.
2) Zone Defense works. I was very impressed how well LB's and safeties played their respective zones and passing is going to be challenging this year.
3) The Running game felt much better. And I loved it last year. It is even smoother and with the new collision system feels even more realistic than it ever has ever been in the past.
4) Presentation - I have no issues with the ESPN style overlays and I really can't give this area a fair shake till I get the retail version in 2 weeks.
5) HDR Lighting - looks gorgeous. The game looks beautiful and the 3-D grass looks great on cut scenens and replays.
Again my expectations were much better AI - Check
Much better tackling - Check
HDR Lighting - Check
Add that in with CC, Custom playbooks, a much improved RTG mode (which I will play first as I await sliders and rosters) and you have IMO what will be with the retail release the best NCAA football title to date.
I can already tell I will be looking for either Playmakers or Slient Nature to come up with a great slider set to fit my game style. Out of the box the game will play good but as always a good slider set only enhances the overall sim experience. I will also play on slow speed.
I have no doubt this will be my last NCAA Football game for this Gen of consoles.
-Has anyone seen the CPU QB attempt any deep balls? I've played 7 games and can't recall the CPU attempting any long passes. It's all been dink and dunk. (Sorry if this has been brought up)
On Heisman, I see them chuck it up a lot deep. Way more then they should. Seemed weird watching the Oregon QB throw it deep 7 times.
Creditbilty department? Whatever, jerkoff. The demo game is the worst looking NCAA game to date on the PS3.
Calling other posters names is not cool and you are not really adding much to this thread IMO. You could have left off the first sentence and your reply would be fine.
Keep in mind that since I got rid of NCAA '11 when my dynasty got boring in January-ish, I'm a little rusty.
---
Won a 16-13 thriller with Alabama over FSU on AA, but I kept shooting myself in the foot. I scored on my first drive to make it 7-0, and dominated the rest of the game. I couldn't score, though, because I'm not used to the good zone, so I'd see an open man, throw it, but the underneath defender would pick it off.
The 4th quarter came around, and I had them pinned deep in their territory with 13 seconds left. They completed a pass to give themselves some breathing room, but then I accidentally called a blitz when I didn't want to during their no-huddle and they threw a 75-yard touchdown pass. 7-7. Overtime.
We traded off field goals in OT because I couldn't figure out a ****ing way to score, but then I sacked them on four straight plays to win.
The Good
1) The new AI zone defense -- it was actually tough to throw against, and unless you had an actual wide open man the pass probably wouldn't be completed.
2) The new tackle animations are good, although there was one where I was sprinting at a guy who stood still and I flew backwards.
3) It's more challenging on default than usual.
4) Better than NCAA '11 so far.
5) You can actually BLOCK KICKS!!! Got a hand on a punt, and it appears to be possible to block a kick. The Bad 1) Too much user pressure. This can be fixed easily with sliders, but I had nine sacks in the game. Nine.
2) Telling the defense to focus on the pass is kind of a cheat code. They didn't complete a single pass after I started doing that in the second half--aside from the time they scored.
The Playbook Glitch 1) When scrolling through punt plays, two of the plays showed up normally, but the third was really small and shoved in the corner, so two-thirds of the normal play box was black and the other third was the whole play compressed.
2) When scrolling through normal plays (I think I was in the Pistol), it showed the three plays, but the top half of two random plays covered the bottom of two of them So there were actually five plays shown on the screen, but I couldn't pick the random ones.
-Has anyone seen the CPU QB attempt any deep balls? I've played 7 games and can't recall the CPU attempting any long passes. It's all been dink and dunk. (Sorry if this has been brought up)
Yes, Bama got about a 30 yard pass on me, splitting cover 3 defenders for a TD.
I have a feeling you would much rather have a NCAA 12 is perfect, nothing wrong with the game thread wouldnt you? Its so annoyin having to read anything negative about this game right? After all it is perfect in every way.
The fact you have taken notice of the constant complaints of the SAME issues, and act like there all just I hate EA posts baffle me
Nope. Constructive criticism is fine. But "Why doesn't EA Care?" "I'm completely disgusted at the lack of awesome grass" "This is the same old game"
That stuff makes me want to bash my head against a wall. Especially when it's repeated ad nauseum by every 5 post wonder who pops their head in this forum to whine and moan for a few weeks, then vanish back into oblivion until the following June when the vicious cycle starts all over.
I think clear improvements such as CPU RB AI, etc. should be recognized. There are obvious issues, such as excessive pancakes on Heisman and a lack of QB scramble, but overall I think it is an excellent demo.
Maybe I'm not use to the speed it's set on? Thoughts? I've read some say they do not like it.
I'm not seeing a problem here. They are only 4 minute halves. That is not a lot of time. The way I play, usually there is only one possession per team per half. And if I start with the ball, the CPU will be lucky to see a possession.
In 3 games, I only scored one touchdown, but I was stopped inside the 5 yard line 3 times. My one TD was on a 25+ yard pass with time expiring on the clock.
I'm not sure how much you expect to be scoring in a 4 minute half. I think 14 points sounds about right for a high score. I play NCAA at 8 minute quarters, so taking 14x4 would be 56 points in a full game for me.
I really like the demo, but I can't help but scratch my head wondering how they were able to get the suction out now as opposed to doing it back in 2008.
I do feel that the overall feel of the game has been upgraded like the transition from hit to hit tackles, but I still feel like I am not in control of my player 100% of the time. I really wish they could overhaul the a.i. I still see computer controlled running backs shifting to avoid players that aren't even in the picture, but as long as they attempt to go forward then it will be a minor issue.
Presentation is very well done, and the replays are extremely easy on the eyes. I only wish they would update the commentary and go ahead and get rid of the cut up and very unnecessary Erin Andrews.
Overall I like the demo, and will like the full game when it hits my PS3 on the July 12th. I think a few changes to the slider set and a slower game speed could make this the one football game I choose to buy for the third straight year.
