Showdown In The Queen City!
The Phils And Reds Open Up 4 Game Series For NL Supremecy
Crosley Field Cincinnati,Oh.-The Phillies headed into Cincinnati today to start a four game series with the second place Reds in a battle for the National League lead.In game one,the Reds came out ready to play and used the longball to get ahead early as Deron Johnson and Marty Keough both went deep in the first two innings giving the Reds a 3-0 advantage after 2.The Phils would get a run back in the 6th when Danny Cater led off the inning with a solo shot. The Reds would answer though ,getting a run in the bottom of the inning as Johnny Edwards hit an RBI single scoring Pete Rose who doubled to start the inning. The Reds expanded the lead to 5 to 1 in the 7th on a Pete Rose RBI ground out.The 8th inning would see the Phils draw a little closer,as Johnny Callison followed Danny Cater's lead off walk with a monster 394 foot home run to right center making it 5-3,but the Reds would not be denied this day as they scored again themselves in the 8th and would go on to win by the score of 6-3.Reds starter Jim O'Toole ran his record to 13 and 7 by going 6 innings and allowing 7 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 5.John Boozer was saddled with the loss, dropping his record to 7-5.Here's the box score.

Short Again Dominant As Phils Win 6-1
Crosley Field Cincinnati,Oh.-Phillies starter Chris Short had his best stuff today, limiting the Reds to only 7 hits and 1 earned run as Philadelphia evened up the series with big 6-1 victory.Reds starter Jim Maloney was making his first start since May and it showed as he was very erratic going 6 innings while allowing 7 hits and 5 earned run,He also struck out 9 Phillie batters and walked 6.The Phils started quickly, scoring in the top of the first on a Johnny Callison RBI single. The Reds would tie it in the 2nd when pitcher Jim Maloney singled home third baseman Tommy Davis. From then on though, the Reds didn't have a chance as Chris Short settled into his groove and mowed the Reds down one inning after another.Meanwhile, the Phillies kept at Maloney, scoring a run in the third on a Dick Allen sac fly and then finally breaking through in the 6th with 3 big runs that put the game away. Here's the box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Tuesday July 21,1964
Culp Whiffs 10 In 4-1 Victory
County Stadium,Milwaukee Wis.-Phillies starting pitcher Ray Culp continued his dominance over National League hitters going 8+ innings and allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 10 running his record to 9 and 4 in Philadelphia's 4-1 victory over the Braves. It was Culp ironicly who got the scoring started with a shocking solo home run in the 3rd inning off of Braves starter Dallas Green. The Phils added another run in the 4th on a Gene Alley RBI single making the score 2-0.The Phils would eventually put the game away in the 8th when a Danny Cater RBI single followed by a Frank Thomas Sac Fly gave them a 4-0 lead after 8.Culp tired in the 9th and was replaced by Jack Baldschun who quelled the Braves rally and earned his 5th save of the season. Here's the box score.

3 Run 9th Gives Braves Shocking 4-3 Victory!
County Stadium Milwaukee Wisc.-In a shocking turn of events, the Braves after being 1 hit through 8 innings, scored 3 ninth inning runs with the final blow being a Rico Carty walk off 2 run homer sending the home crowd into a frenzy as Milwaukee stunned Philadelphia 4-3.The game started out as a tense 0-0 game through 3 when in the top of the fourth, the Phils broke through with an RBI ground out by Frank Thomas that was set up on a steal attempt by Johnny Callison and subsequent errant throw by Joe Torre landing Callison on third. The Phils would add two more in the 5th courtesy of a bases loaded two run single by Johnny Callison putting the Phils up 3-0 after 5.Phils starter John Boozer meanwhile was absolutely amazing, taking a no hitter into the 7th inning where Hank Aaron ended all chances of that with a 403 foot lead off home run making the score 3-1.Entering the bottom of the 9th with the score still 3-1,John Boozer gave up a lead off double to pinch hitter Gene Oliver for the Braves 2nd hit of the game.Boozer then gave way to Bobby Locke who got Mike DeLa Hoz to fly out and Hank Aaron to pop out bringing Joe Torre to the plate with 2 outs and a man on 2nd.Torre singled to center scoring Oliver closing the gap to 3-2 which brought Rico Carty to the plate who proceeded to smash a 2-2 fastball over the center field fence.Game Over.Braves Win.Here's the box score.

Thursday July 23,1964
Braves "Short" On Miracles,Fall 4-2
County Stadium,Phila.Pa.-In a hard fought well pitched affair, the Phillies behind the arm of star pitcher Chris Short were able to edge the Milwaukee Braves 4-2 giving Short his 13th victory of the season against only 5 defeats.Down 1-0 in the bottom of the second, the Brave briefly captured the lead on a 2 run home run by catcher Joe Torre but The Phillies came right back in the third with a Danny Cater sac fly tying the game at 2.It would stay that way until the 7th when once again,Danny Cater would come through, this time with a 2 run single to left field giving the Phillies the lead they would hold on to,4-2.For the season, rookie Danny Cater has been nothing short of amazing. He has a batting average of .341,and an an OBP of .378,he also has 7 home runs 73 RBI ,39 runs scored and was also a member of this year's all-star team, quite a feat for such a young player. Here's today's box score.
