Late Surge Pushes Redbirds Past Phillies

Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa-After jumping ahead 3-1,the Phils slowly lost grip on the game as Bob Gibson became more and more dominating as the game wore on and the Cardinals bats had just enough in them to push them past Philadelphia,5-3.The Phillies offense was provided by none other than Richie Allen who homered for the second straight day on his way to 2 for 3 with 3 RBI and a run scored. The rest of the team had nothing for Gibson, who won for the 16th time this season, which leads the majors. For St.Louis, the game winning hit was provided by second baseman Phil Gagliano who broke a 3-3 tie with a two run double in the top of the 7th inning giving Gibson all the breathing room he would need.On a worse note, the Phillies lost Frank Thomas and Tony Gonzalez to seperate injuries in the game,Thomas was diagnosed with a fractured cheekbone and will be out for a month, its the 2nd time this season Thomas has missed significant time with an injury.Gonzalez's injury is much less severe,he'll miss about a week with a bruised hip. Here's the box score.

Sunday July 26,1964

BLACK SUNDAY!
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-In a terrible display of baseball skill, the Phillies looked like a bush league team today dropping both games of today's doubleheader while committing 7 errors and falling two and a half games behind streaking Cincinnati. In game one,the Phillies wasted an excellent pitching performance by Ray Culp who went 7 innings and allowed 4 hits and 3 unearned runs in the 5-1 defeat. The Phillies were held to only 4 hits, which matched the amount of errors they committed. In game 2,the Cardinals got 2 late runs off of reliever Bobby Locke to win again, this time 5-3.Here's the box scores.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Tuesday July 28,1964
Thank You "Berry" Much
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-When it's Chris Short vs. Juan Marichal, you expect a low scoring pitchers duel thats usually decided by a play or two. What we had today, was as gripping as you can get. Both pitchers set the tone early, quickly mowing through the first two innings. In the third though,Chris Short battled his control a little, walking 3 batters including Willie McCovey with the bases loaded giving San Francisco an early 1-0 lead. The game would stay that way until the bottom of the 6th when with one swing of the bat, rookie Danny Cater electrified the stadium with game tying solo home run. After 8 innings with the score still tied,Chris Short would leave the ballgame having surrendered only 5 hits and 1 earned run while striking out and walking 5.Jack Baldschun entered in the top of the 9th for Short and although things got a little hairy,he got out of the inning without allowing a run.In the bottom of the 9th,with two out and two on,Ken Berry came to the plate to face Marichal.Berry proceeded to line a 3-1 pitch over the shortstops head into left bringing home the winning run in dramatic fashion. With the 2-1 victory, the Phillies snapped a 3 game losing streak that they desperately needed to break. Here's the box score.
