Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Sunday July 12,1964
Phillies Sweep Doubleheader with 5-1 Victory
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila Pa.-First of all, your eyes are not playing tricks on you.I forgot to put the game recap up after the 2nd game of the doubleheader,so here ya go.In game two of todays doubleheader, the Phillies used the long ball to take down Milwaukee for the 2nd time today. The Phils got home runs from Tony Taylor and Johnny Callison as well as 6 strong innings on the hill from John Boozer, combine that with the relief work of Bobby Locke and you have a recipe for winning that the Braves could do nothing about. Here's the box score.

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Tuesday July 14,1964

Phillies Blank Listless Pirates 7-0
Forbes Field,Pittsburgh Pa.-The Phils in a very workmanlike effort, laid the wood on the Pirates taking the first game of the series 7-0.The Phils were on the board quickly courtesy of a Richie Allen 2 run single in the top of the first inning. The game would remain 2-0 until the top of the 7th when Pittsburgh reliever Tom Butters self destructed allowing 1 hit and 4 walks including 2 with the bases full giving Philadelphia 2 easy runs,Butters was then yanked for Don Schwall who allowed 2 hits to the first two batters he faced before settling down and getting out of the inning. All tolled,Butters was charged with 1 hit 5 earned runs and 4 walks in just a inning and a third of work. The Phillies pitching, was a totally different story.Jim Bunning was ferocious on the hill going 7 and a third while allowing only 3 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5 in his 9th victory of the season.Bobby Locke finished it out going an inning and two thirds while allowing two hits.In one more bit of info,Phils SS Gene Alley had a great day against his old team going 3 for 4 with a double an RBI and a run scored. Here's the box score.

Pirates Take Down Phillies 3-1
Forbes Field,Pittsburgh Pa.-The Pirates lead by starting pitcher Earl Francis stymied Phillie batters all day and walked away with an impressive 3-1.With neither team doing anything offensively, the Pirates finally broke through in the 6th off of Claude Osteen when following 2 base hits to lead off the inning,Roberto Clemente roped an RBI double to left giving Pittsburgh a 1-0 lead.Donn Clendenon followed with a sac fly to center giving Pittsburgh a 2-0 after 6.The Bucs would score once more in the 7th courtesy of Gary Geiger's RBi single to left and it was 3-0 after 7.The Phils would finally rally in the 9th with one out as Danny Cater and Rich Allen hit back to back singles followed by a Frank Thomas RBI single making it 3-1.Clay Dalrymple would follow with a ground out giving the Phils second and third with two outs for pinch hitter Johnny Callison who grounded out harmlessly to first ending the game. Here's the box score.

4 Run 9th Pushes Phils Past Pirates 4-0
Forbes Field Pittsburgh Pa.-In a tightly played pitchers duel, the Phillies scored 4 9th inning runs to beat Pittsburgh 4-0.Phillies starter Ray Culp pitched 7 no hit innings before being lifted for a pinch runner in the 8th,surprising everyone in the stadium...except Culp that is.When asked about it after the game,Culp admitted to reporters that he was totally spent and asked coach Mauch to bring a runner in for him after reaching base to start the 8th."This isn't a selfish game" said Culp."I was dead tired and we had a chance to score so I did what was best for the team.I want a pennant,I don't care about personal glory"With an attitude like that, its easy to see why Culp is a clubhouse leader.Phils reliever Johnny Klippstein would allow a hit in the 8th but that was it as Pittsburgh was absolutely whitewashed the rest of the game.In the 9th,buoyed by Culp's sacrifice the Phillies scratched out 5 singles and 2 walks scoring 4 runs in the process to win the ballgame. Here's the boxscore

Re: 1964(and on)Philadelphia Phillies Historical Simulation-OOTP 8

Dick Allen probably could have been really, really big if he wasn't a drunk.

I was told that he probably hit the ball harder than anyone in the game. During his playing days in Chicago, the Pale Hose were in Fenway playing against the Red Sox. Allen hit a rocket off the wall that went back to Rico Petrocelli, who was at shortstop, on one hop and Petrocelli almost threw out Allen at first.

I also never got to see him play but my dad always talks about how great he was and the thing is he put up big numbers on some bad Phillies teams. When he went to Chicago,he finally grew up and won the AL MVP one year. He's definitely a fringe hall of famer with stats on par with Yogi Berra. Here's his career numbers.

.292 lifetime Avg. 351 HR 1119 RBI .378 OBP .534 Slg.

320 Doubles and 79 Triples.
