Bunning Razor Sharp In 2nd Straight 2-1 Victory

Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-In another fantastic pitching duel, the Phillies Jim Bunning outpitched the Giants Bob Shaw to give Philadelphia their second straight 2-1 victory over the Giants. The Phillies got on the board first,on a balk call of all things with pitcher Jim Bunning on third base giving Philadelphia an early 1-0 lead. The Giants came right back in the 4th to tie the game at 1 courtesy of a Willie McCovey sac fly.Following a Cookie Rojas single and subsequent sacrifice bunt by Ken Berry to start the 5th,Shortstop Gene Alley got what would end up being the winning RBI on a sharp single to left that scored Rojas and gave the Phils the 2-1 edge. The story in this game though was Bunning.Following McCovey's sac fly in the 4th,Jim was absolutely perfect as he retired the final 17 batters in a row in dominating fashion for his 11th victory of the season. Here's the box score

2 Out Of 3 Ain't Bad!
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-After holding the heavy hitting Giants to 1 run in each of the last two games, you knew they were due for a breakout.Unfortunately for the Phils, they broke out.The Giant bats woke up today, pounding out 10 hits on their way to a 6-4 victory over the Phillies.Although the Phillies got the scoring started courtesy of a Richie Allen first inning RBI double, the Giants slowly built a 5-1 lead after six and a half.In the bottom of the 7th though, the Phillies struck back thanks to a Johnny Callison 3 run homer over the 50 foot high right field fence making the score 5-4.The Phils would get no closer though as reliever Don Larsen held the Phils scoreless over the final two frames earning his 6th save.On a bit of a troubling note, this is the fourth consecutive start that the Phillies have lost when Claude Osteen has started the game and although he hasn't pitched terribly bad,he hasn't won either. Here's the box score.

Atonement!
Connie Mack Stadium,Phila.Pa.-The beauty of the game of baseball is,that you always have the opportunity to redeem yourself and in today's game thats exactly what happened. With the Phillies cruising in the top of the 3rd with a 3-0 lead, the Dodgers rallied to put two men on with one out when catcher Jimmy Coker came to the plate and hit a routine fly ball to Johnny Callison in right, but inexplicably,Callison dropped the ball giving LA 2 gift runs closing the gap to 3-2 after 3.In the bottom of the 5th,Callison redeemed himself by hitting a solo shot to right field upping the lead to 4-2.The Dodgers would score again in the 6th but Callisons' home run would stand up as the game winner as the Phillies held on 4-3.Here's the box score.

I can't understand how the bosox are continuing to contend. The team was a cellar dwellar until the "Impossible Dream".

How could you have traded Tony Taylor for a schmuck like Bobby Richardson? Was Richardson that much better than Taylor?

It was a terrible trade on my part I think.Offensively,Taylor was a little better but defensively Richardson was much better as far as the game's ratings go.So I was willing to give up a little offense so that my middle of the diamond defense was great. The problem though is that while Taylor played into the early 70's Richardson retired in 1967.(I found that out after the trade)So I'll chalk this up as a short term gain long term loss.As far as Boston goes, they've defininely been the surprise of the season.Yaz,Conigliaro and Dick Stuart have been carrying them all season. Also how about them Yankees in the second division(hehehe)
