MLB The Show 17 News Post

The folks at Sony Interactive Entertainment break down their MLB The Show 17 trailer which was released earlier this month. Here are some nuggets you'll find mentioned:
  • New hairstyles made it into the game (Shown in the new AA locker room).
  • Road to The Show will feature a new non-linear decision making system, which will allow you to make big decisions that matter.
  • More player and team specific personality will be included in this year's game.
  • Spin of the ball off of the bat has been greatly improved with new hit types like curving hits down the line.
  • Four new Historical Stadiums are included in the game. (Old Yankee Stadium, Hubert H. Humphry Metrodome, Shea Stadium, Sun Life Stadium) - Nice detective work 13SM13!
  • All batter walkups in Diamond Dynasty will show the player card types on screen.
  • Show Track allows for some new presentational elements in this year's game.
  • More player specific home run swings.
  • Both Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. will be on the legends roster for MLB The Show 17.
What else did you spy in the trailer?

That would be pretty awesome. I love collecting the cards, played Conquest (which was fun but became a grind) and played some head to head (even tried and failed to run a DD league with the ability to play friends). But a solo offline DD league would be pretty awesome and I for sure would play it a lot.

I've seen it once in a blue moon also, but it's definitely not as frequent as the play is attempted nor made in real life.

Can't wait to see the new physics in action. That and the new RTTS features have me on the edge of my chair with anticipation...not to mention all the censored stuff, heh. Bring on the streams!

LOL somehow this strange sense of superbism only existing in top-rated players reminds me of Ethan Albright's "open letter to John Madden" when talking about his awareness rating in a video game (NSFW).

Quote:
It’s also pretty wonderful that my awareness rating was 59. You make it sound like I wake up in the morning, helplessly [beep] and [beep] myself, then lose three of my teeth before I discover that I am trying to eat a rock for breakfast. [beep], John, I understand you saying that I am slow and lacking athleticism, but a rating like this pretty much labels me as [beep]. Rod “He Hate Me” Smart has a 52 in this category. Electronic Arts is saying that seven rating points separate me and the breathing embodiment of the perfect oxymoron. Rod Smart struggled to arrange words in sentence form. Cave men had better hold of the English language. The only actions that separate point values of ignorance at this embarrassing level are things like using your own toothbrush to wipe your [beep]. I basically edged out Rod by my lack of [beep] teeth. If I take a night school class, could you bump me up to a 60?

Or, perhaps a little more baseball-related, a response to somebody's article praising David Eckstein:

Quote:
He plays second base by positioning and studying opposing hitters and somehow gets to the right place at the right time.

A fact that is unique to David Eckstein. Robinson Cano plays second base by running in circles, closing his eyes, and trying to feel the ball off the bat. Omar Infante plays second base by attempting to divine, through augury and calf-entrail-spilling, who will hit the ball to him and when. Ian Kinsler plays second base by putting in a little earpiece and having someone whisper to him what to do, like Brando used to do when he no longer bothered to learn his lines. Clint Barmes plays second base like a guitar, picking the entire second base area up and strumming it lightly, occasionally taking requests from the crowd. (You should hear Clint Barmes play "April Come She Will" on the acoustic second-base-area. It'll bring a tear to your eye.)

Honestly, I think I am most curious to hear more about the throwback version. My brother and I used to play the old school games like Baseball Simulator 1000 and Ken Griffey Jr Baseball all the time. I can't play him in The Show now because it is a little too advanced for him (and I play all the time). This would be a nice mode to play with him. If they make it like it was where you can play with current rosters in the old style with any team, that would be awesome.

I got my retractable roofs last year (which are gorgeous), so really, I can't wait to see the new Braves Stadium in game. I hope to see more of a GM mode in Franchise too. I miss that.

Would love to have new player models, but honestly I would be happy with some great animated uniform cloth.....and I think we see a little of that in the trailer. Also really hoping that we get a game with some nice HDR taking advantage of the Pro hardware.

Really pumped for the improved ground ball physics, it was the first thing I noticed when the trailer was revealed. It has been on top of my wishlist. It has the potential to give the game a very different feel on the field.

Agreed. Ball Physics are my biggest thing too in regards to authentic gameplay. Each year they have improved (since MLB 12) and this looks like a big breakthrough for 17.

Agreed. There will be other features that will probably be talked about more, but in my humble opinion, this improvement/addition is one of biggest in the series.

I cannot wait to see/read more on how its implemented.

Ramone actually touched on that last night in the stream. It will carry over to all types of hit balls not just ground balls down the line.

While staying on the topic of ball physics, does anyone know if balls have more bounce on turf in-game? I thought of the idea when I heard the Metrodome was back, but wondered if it applies to the Trop and Rogers Centre as well.

I enjoy the Gameplay its just that Franchise and RTTS gets very boring after a while. Having more options to run the team like a business and keep it profitable and popular would be fun and keep it fresh. For RTTS, being able to buy things like bonuses attributes and items with your salary would be dope. Give you a reason to go for a big contract

More stat tracking please.

What specifically?

They added in quite a bit of stat tracking last cycle with WAR and a bunch more stats on the player cards. Can you believe that only HR, RBI, AVG (not even SBs) were tracked year-to-year in franchise mode before then? Stat tracking was my biggest wish list item before MLB '16 and I think they more or less closed that loophole.

Yearly buy for me regardless! And makes me even more excited with my fav player of ALL time gracing the cover.
Love that they gave Lindors face a update, hope this is true for Russell, Baez and especially Hendricks too.
And liking what I'm seeing with new and improved ball physics, hope this leads to real wind being in the game again!

Russell, Hendricks, and Baez look just as good as Lindor does. I checked them out yesterday as a matter of fact.

P.S. to anyone thinking about it, this is not an invitation to ask how your favorite players look.

Thanks Ramone and sorry wasn't meant to be a question but appreciate the response!
Happy Holidays to You and Your Staff and as always look forward to March!

Since this is really the only game I play and play it all year. I really hope the Retro mode has a season mode which will give myself some new game modes. I am really looking forward to the Retro mode.

Do they yet tally the number of a player's MVP, GG, SS, CY titles and AS appearances, etc. in franchise?

Always kind of diminished the value of getting this when it really meant nothing in the end, or at least couldn't be retained.
