MLB The Show 17 News Post

The folks at Sony Interactive Entertainment break down their MLB The Show 17 trailer which was released earlier this month. Here are some nuggets you'll find mentioned:
  • New hairstyles made it into the game (Shown in the new AA locker room).
  • Road to The Show will feature a new non-linear decision making system, which will allow you to make big decisions that matter.
  • More player and team specific personality will be included in this year's game.
  • Spin of the ball off of the bat has been greatly improved with new hit types like curving hits down the line.
  • Four new Historical Stadiums are included in the game. (Old Yankee Stadium, Hubert H. Humphry Metrodome, Shea Stadium, Sun Life Stadium) - Nice detective work 13SM13!
  • All batter walkups in Diamond Dynasty will show the player card types on screen.
  • Show Track allows for some new presentational elements in this year's game.
  • More player specific home run swings.
  • Both Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. will be on the legends roster for MLB The Show 17.
What else did you spy in the trailer?

Stat tracking was my biggest wish list item before MLB '16 and I think they more or less closed that loophole.
I still want them to display the rtts stats they hide from us.

Always kind of diminished the value of getting this when it really meant nothing in the end, or at least couldn't be retained.
Nope. They just keep the previous 3 years for the awards.

Those aren't really stats per se, but there should be an awards page on the player cards where that info can be found.

5 fixes that are needed:
1) OF having line drives go through them when an animation does not take.
2) Batted balls hitting the pitcher too frequently (and the pitcher never being hurt).
3) Too easy to throw strikes, and when bad pitches do happen, they are too often left over the plate.
4) Please please please fix the sim stats for complete games and shutouts.
5) Using lefty/righty ratings for pitchers so that they are used situationally.

Please, get these right.

Very good video for a Beta version. Those swing animations are looking real smooth.

I've been playing The Show 15 since it was released and I am enjoying the heck out of it. I thought about riding with 15 until the wheels came off. But watching this trailer just made me want to make the switch and from the looks of it, this might be the year to make the switch..

R-E-L-A-X MLB games don't come out in december. If you think these are the only improvements, you've got another thing coming.

I do.

As do several of my buddies. We are looking forward to setting up some type of league to play together in Retro Mode.

Couldn't be any further from the truth. You personally not wanting it doesn't mean "nobody" wants it.

Ok. I told you guys that if it started again, people were getting a week off.

Whether you like a mode or not. There are ways to express your opinions in a constructive format. I personal don't play Diamond Dynasty or Online. I wish that these kind of modes had never come to be and wish all support went into the game modes I do play. But that is an unrealistic expectation. Plenty of people love these modes and it drives income for the developers, so good for them. So while I don't play or like these modes, I love the game and have a lot of respect for the developers and the franchise, so I will support the product.

I'm hoping that Retro Mode is playable online.

If so, we should start an OS league.

In reading the release it sounded like couch play and I would assume against the CPU also.

Yeah that is how I understood it as well when reading the release, but I'm still holding out hope.

The lack of hits where the ball spins away from the corner infielder down the line was one of the things that had annoyed me for years. The winning hit in the World Series by the Cubs was literally impossible to have in The Show until now. Thank you!

Count me in for being all for retro mode. I love sim baseball just as much as we all do, but having a retro mode is something I will most likely enjoy when I'm tired and just have an itch to play a baseball game without all the focus that goes into a full 9 inning game in just a normal game.

If you don't like it, you don't have to play it. I am sure they didn't decide hey, instead of making the core game better, lets just do a retro mode and say screw franchise or RTTS. I'm sure the development resources were still even.

If Retro mode is playable online I think that would make for a very fun and unique experience... Plus I assume retro mode would probably run more smoothly online, with the simplified stuff.

I also realize that even if SCEA wants that, it probably won't happen in year 1, though.

I think Retro will be a great new mode. My only hope is that you can turn off the retro music. That was bad enough when those games were out. I don't care to relive that part again. LOL!

My reaction when Russell announced changes to ball spin and physics:
