MLB The Show 17 News Post

The folks at Sony Interactive Entertainment break down their MLB The Show 17 trailer which was released earlier this month. Here are some nuggets you'll find mentioned:
  • New hairstyles made it into the game (Shown in the new AA locker room).
  • Road to The Show will feature a new non-linear decision making system, which will allow you to make big decisions that matter.
  • More player and team specific personality will be included in this year's game.
  • Spin of the ball off of the bat has been greatly improved with new hit types like curving hits down the line.
  • Four new Historical Stadiums are included in the game. (Old Yankee Stadium, Hubert H. Humphry Metrodome, Shea Stadium, Sun Life Stadium) - Nice detective work 13SM13!
  • All batter walkups in Diamond Dynasty will show the player card types on screen.
  • Show Track allows for some new presentational elements in this year's game.
  • More player specific home run swings.
  • Both Ken Griffey Jr. and Ken Griffey Sr. will be on the legends roster for MLB The Show 17.
What else did you spy in the trailer?

Well, I don't know if they'll jump into new player models for us this year, but one of the graphical upgrades is definitely the animated uniform cloth. Here's to hoping some of the other features may be brand new:

- Dynamic weather
- Player models
- Nighttime lighting system / day cycle (24-hour clock?)
- Broadcast fielding camera
- Custom stadium grass patterns
- Pro support for 4K / 60 FPS

Stuff like that. Trying to think what else would be considered "back of the box" (though a few on that list wouldn't even make that cut, so who knows).

To clarify the quoted portion

The way it worked before, we were basically modelling the spin that would occur if the ball had hit a wall instead of a bat. Given the direction of the hit and the pitch, the cross product became the axis of rotation. This is ok, but misses a huge set of hit types, like curving hits down the line, ........., ....................... there's more to this but can't spill the beans just yet. Wouldn't be a tease if you gave out all the info right? And I had to be very brief in the rewind for flow and consistency purposes. But just know there's a lot more to this.

Thank you sweet baby Jeebus and the baseball Gods above for getting Lindor's face right!!! Haha

Question about curving balls, for Ramone. Do the balls curve on line drives in the air down the lines?

We'll explain it all in a Twitch livestream at some point. But that's all the info we are releasing now.

Music to my ears!

Hopefully the ball will now go all the way to the outfield wall on hard hits down the line and also fixes all those little dribblers in front of home plate. And those tiny popups at home plate where the catcher can so quickly get up and makes the catch. And more choppers and bloop hits as well.

At the end as well but Yankee Stadium and the homer dome I think are the only classic ones. We will have to wait for the others. Pure speculation on my part but I wouldn't be surprised if Ebbets Field makes the list - the place where Stan Musial acquired the nickname "the man".

Nice. Nothing like some new info on The Show to make the winter go faster. March can't get here fast enough.

Really looking forward to hearing/seeing more on this.

Awesome news on ball physics, much needed! I hope to see more bloop singles between outfielders/infielders, line drives curving away from outfielders, etc.

Ramone mentioned ball physics like being as if they were straight off a wall in previous builds, I hope they make the CPU more human-like and not know EXACTLY where the ball is going to go when it bounces off the wall. I always misjudge this and give up triples meanwhile the CPU perfectly fields a scorcher off the wall and throws me out at 2nd by 10 feet.

Ball physics are huge and yes it'll be a big step forward if we get some form of dynamic ball physics when it hits the wall.

I know it would be a tough balance to please the customer base because I'm sure those who play DD don't want some crazy bounce costing them a couple runs.

So...um...who is Sony Interactive Entertainment?

Thanks Ramone for the insight. 17 looks great, March can't get here soon enough.

Same company, there was a restructure though around release last year.

Any chance of seeing Vladimir Guerrero back in the game? Lol

Anyways, this sounds promising. I know everyone's been high on The Show because it does have the most consistent gameplay, but for me the series has stagnated since entering this gen, mainly with Franchise and RTTS. Here's to hoping MLB 17 feels fresh. I put down MLB 16 before the All-Star game even came around...

Im curious if interleague games will rotate this year? Also, really anxious to see how SunTrust Park looks, and how much of the Battery and the surrounding area they included.

Have complete faith we'll have another great year of baseball thanks to the guys hard at work on The Show.
My wishlist for this game and the reality of how much they can actually implement on a yearly basis may be on complete ends of each other but I've never been let down and release date is always the most anticipated of ANY game.
Thanks Ramone and crew, you guys are greatly appreciated. Can't wait for all the new info on the way!
