Madden NFL 15 News Post

EA Sports is currently livestreaming Madden NFL 15, detailing the presentation and graphics. (Note: As of 3:30 PM EST, the stream has now ended. We'll effort an archived version soon!)

UPDATE: Click here to watch the archived stream. (It takes some time to load...)

Here are some thoughts on the stream today:
  • The halftime show is definitely improved and of good quality. The problem will be most will find it perfectly skippable, but there aren't any real cases where a halftime show is must-see TV, even in real-life. It's sponsored by Verizon, so there's that.
  • Commentary was ok, you didn't hear much of it due to the dev commentary over the gameplay, but it seemed to flow a bit better. We won't know anything about that until a later date.
  • Coaches have unique body types and head models, so they do look better. Coaches we saw today (Reid, Tomlin mainly) were definitely a step up.
  • Celebrations and such definitely are smoother/more aware of the context they're happening in since they happen within the gameplay itself and not a loaded cut-scene. Still some wonky instances but overall better.
  • The developers talked about equipment a bit. The new uniforms for each team are going to be in, and uniform/helmet degradation are in as well.
  • Switching of cameras was very smooth, definitely a huge improvement there.
  • Sidelines are much busier now, more people on them, etc. They still don't look perfect, but from where we were to where we are now, huge improvement.
  • Overall the presentation is quite good in-game this year, it definitely has a new layer of polish on it that wasn't there last year. It's not perfect, but clearly its taken yet another leap ahead this season.
What did you think of the stream?

It's one of life's most interesting and baffling questions. Why insist on inventing your own presentation? COPY WHAT IS SEEN IN REAL LIFE. Simple concept to understand, apparently harder than curing cancer to implement.
Probably leads back to the main problem, the engineers. There's no way this dude works for NFL films and cbs and can't see the holes in the presentation. I'm sure every problem in this game leads to the existing code, and the engineers trying to implement things in the easiest way possible.

My guess is that the up-close shots are an intentional design choice and intentionally engineered that way, as to allow Tiburon to show off their graphics; not some workaround. Graphics are still a major factor in selling AAA video games, and the game does look great so it makes sense to show it off.

As to whether it's realistic - no this approach doesn't match 1:1 with an NFL broadcast.

This is also my conclusion for why player size amd field size are not 1:1 in respect to scaling to resemble real life appropriately: to show off graphical details.

There are plenty of ways to show off the graphics and still keep it authentic to broadcast. They could've done something like "show-motion" that the show has, or keeping it NFL "NB Cee it" where replays are super close and in slow motion, after the traditional replay is shown. Being authentic is the most impressive thing they can do for Madden.

EA is not shy to tinker w the bells & whistles but I do not see them mimicking what others do: thats partly why I see their style for what it is.

I appreciate your indulgence to think outside the box but they do not seem to share that same perspective of alternatives.

I see what your saying, but my problem is their choices just don't make sense to me. They can do their own thing, I don't have a problem with that, but usually things don't look as good, or just don't make sense.

Still very excited to play come August. Most excited I've been for Madden in a while.
Looks like it will be a very fun.

Ah. Thanks for clarifying. Hopefully they can be added in a roster update or patch.

Watched the stream again, colors looked better with you tube. Some observations; With the defense supposedly being revamped this yr it will mean nothing if the cpu logic does not have the ability to use these features. For example when its user vs user the protect the stick feature looks great, but when playing vs the CPU will they have the same smarts? Will the CPU be smart enough to use wide 9?If not these new features will be useless and will be like madden 25, but much prettier. Second how is there no sports ticker yet? How can you have a authentic presentations and leave this out? If this doesn't make it into this yrs that's really sad. NCAA had it what 2 years ago with 126 teams? I don't get it.My hype meter was at a 10 and now has shrunk to a 6.

In real life receivers often have to adjust to passes, turn around for passes that are behind them, go down low to the ground for short thrown passes, juggle catches, I would love to see the back shoulder pass and catch done like the real NFL in this game.
If its not in the game fine, but don't hype of a feature that doesn't work or plays out very rarely.

Notice the 2nd catch by Veron Davis, see how he adjust his body where he does a 180 in the air to catch a pass thrown behind him. This is not in Madden, receivers cant do a 180 in the air, they can only turn their body about 30-45 degrees for a pass thrown behind them, resulting in the same old catch animation every time. Also watch how often receivers fall to the ground after making a catch.

I've heard they have all kinds of new catch animations, including wrapping around and catching the ball against the defenders hip. We aren't going to see everything in a couple quarters of gameplay. There were a few drastic overthrows by Smith and I think one of them was in the second half, which for some reason is missing.

Oh and I think you tried to post a video, I'll fix it for you. You only have to post the URL now.

There still may be a ticker for CFM, this was just play now. There is a little ticker during halftime with the stats though.

That was Chip Kelly who was upset. They got it right.

I also liked the run game. Last year there were too many times where there was a lane that was possible to break through but you ran into the back of your lineman and got stuck on or tripped. This year it seems pretty smooth when hitting the hole.

You're incorrect about the Gus Bradley thing. And, to be clear, I'm talking about the sack right at the 2 min warning. Right after the sack, the camera goes to Gus Bradley. He puts his hands out and gives negative emotion. How do I know it's Gus? There are multiple jags behind him and the ea guy playing the game says something like, 'and there's Gus Bradley . . . '. I really think he wanted to say, 'and, there's Gus Bradley . . . Celebrating the big play by his d,' but he couldn't say that because Gus was instead upset about the play. So, instead, he just says somewhat awkwardly, 'there's Gus Bradley'.

Well I hope so.There trying to replicate a cbs broadcast but not having a ticker of other scores around the league i dont understand. Also Halftime shows should have scores from around the league that needs to be in there as well. Never seen a halftime show just showing one score from a game. Well see I guess.

Slants and ins seem to work against cover 1 man to man as well as the comeback route the corner gives way to much space I no it was a small sample size but I noticed it. The drops of wide open passes annoys me as well as Alex smith on the run hitting his wideout on the money was a opportunity to thrown a inaccurate pass but it didn't happen. I love madden football so I'm not mad it's just that in the first stream they picked plays against defenses that they knew would stop the route in this stream they played the cpu and the cpu went in lol

They're just implementing it at a foundational level right now. It reminds me of red zone halftime more than cbs. The main thing is that it is accurately telling the story of the game, that's what a halftime show is supposed to do.

In the nfl more of the halftime is dedicated to other games then the current one. You should know what's going on in your game you're playing it. I would like to know what's going on in games I'm not playing.
