Madden NFL 15 News Post

EA Sports is currently livestreaming Madden NFL 15, detailing the presentation and graphics. (Note: As of 3:30 PM EST, the stream has now ended. We'll effort an archived version soon!)

UPDATE: Click here to watch the archived stream. (It takes some time to load...)

Here are some thoughts on the stream today:
  • The halftime show is definitely improved and of good quality. The problem will be most will find it perfectly skippable, but there aren't any real cases where a halftime show is must-see TV, even in real-life. It's sponsored by Verizon, so there's that.
  • Commentary was ok, you didn't hear much of it due to the dev commentary over the gameplay, but it seemed to flow a bit better. We won't know anything about that until a later date.
  • Coaches have unique body types and head models, so they do look better. Coaches we saw today (Reid, Tomlin mainly) were definitely a step up.
  • Celebrations and such definitely are smoother/more aware of the context they're happening in since they happen within the gameplay itself and not a loaded cut-scene. Still some wonky instances but overall better.
  • The developers talked about equipment a bit. The new uniforms for each team are going to be in, and uniform/helmet degradation are in as well.
  • Switching of cameras was very smooth, definitely a huge improvement there.
  • Sidelines are much busier now, more people on them, etc. They still don't look perfect, but from where we were to where we are now, huge improvement.
  • Overall the presentation is quite good in-game this year, it definitely has a new layer of polish on it that wasn't there last year. It's not perfect, but clearly its taken yet another leap ahead this season.
What did you think of the stream?

Maybe it's from E3?

I like the presentation but I'm curious to see what happens when you progress thru your CFM. Will generated QB's still have the NFL films intros? Will the canned photos of rookies still be repeated?(Kind of silly when you have three players with the same face) Will the broadcast incorporate storylines of the madden generated players? Maybe they'll address this in the CFM stream. Last year's CFM felt really stale after 4-5 years.

If your TV is properly calibrated (and can support it) you will not notice any difference in "Full" or "Limited".

The reason folks say it "looks better" is because it over saturates the colors, and crushes the blacks.

As far as this stream goes...as has been mentioned everything BUT the jerseys seem to be of proper color...so I very seriously doubt it has anything to do with the RGB setting.

Smitty and Azure said last night that there are some things in CFM presentation that people will like. Azure also said that the halftime show was ok but we need to see more, and he told Brian Murray that when he was down there to test the game out. He talked about how we need the things that 2k5 had like highlights of other games and a full weekly wrap up show. He said he believes Brian wants to deliver those things and we just have to see where they build off of this halftime in the future. I'm guessing the CFM presentation things he said we would like are the part that Brian Murray was referring to as his favorite part of the game a few weeks ago, but we will find out soon enough..

One thing that was mentioned about presentation that I haven't seen yet are the player montages. I remember seeing or hearing that in Madden 15 if a player is having a big game they will show a bunch of that players highlights while talking about it (similar to NCAA).

Does anybody else remember hearing this or have actually seen it occur

That's about par for the course in terms of Madden.

There are a lot of presentation elements that have been included in previous Maddens that would be pretty solid in today's game had they continued to improve them.

As for the stream, it was alright in my opinion, nothing groundbreaking gameplay-wise. I love all the new jumbotron stuff and CBS replication of graphics. But one thing that really annoys me is the constant marketing talk these guys do when showcasing the game, using buzzwords in every sentence. To be perfectly honest, the people EA Sports hires to be the face/voice of their Madden franchise are truly marketing geniuses.

As such, I've learned that the absolute best way to watch these videos is on mute, so that one can watch what's going on without someone else essentially telling you what you're supposed to be seeing, even if it's not there. As soon as they started talking about how something in a previous Madden had been poorly implemented, I shut the volume off. When I did, all I saw were new camera angles on kickoffs (a welcome idea, I guess), stat overlays that stayed on screen for about a second, a shoddy halftime show, and very awkward replay camera angles. Graphics looked pretty good as usual, and player/coach models look a lot better.

True but you have to start somewhere, it took 3 years to make 2k5's halftime show. They improved it each year a little more from 2k3-5. This is Brian's first year as presentation director, for a first year and short cycle I would say he's done a tremendous job compared to presentation last year, that's without seeing what CFM has for presentation.

How can 2 streams be almost totally different in gameplay for the same game?....The comments and video of the last game was great....I actually had trust and so anxious for the game to come out BUT this video beside the graphics left a totally opposite feeling....How is that possible?......They were better off not showing this stream IMO....that one play where alex smith made it around/pass the DE(which suppose to be improved), throws across his body and a perfect completion.......nightmares of old madden games went thru my head.....So which game are we getting on aug 26

Forgive me if someone has already mentioned it earlier in the thread since I havent read the whole thing. But, looks like during a change in quarters they will be showing highlights from the previous quarter that just ended and in 25 it just changes to the next quarter with no highlights at all.

Also something I noticed and I think someone said the Jumbo Tron graphic doesnt change, but I noticed it go from just saying Jaguars all the time to Red Zone on the Gerhart attempt and then Touchdown. During the Gerhart TD I also noticed when the LB stopped him from scoring in the redzone he just gets up and walks back to the huddle. I am pretty sure if you stop the other team from scoring at anytime during the game not only will you get up and celebrate, other teammates are going to come and mob you, at least a couple should show up and do something.

The jumbotrons are definitely dynamic, there's 22 different triggers. They said some of them like Heinz field are team specific, they will show the ketchup bottles pour in the red zone. There are all kinds of multi player celebrations going on in this video, some are very subtle, at one point two of the chiefs do a chest bump after a completion to Baldwin I believe.

This is just the beginning, Brian said he ultimately wants to see the nfl start to copy off of Madden's presentation. Obviously we are nowhere near that now, but it gives you an idea of his vision for presentation.

I understand about other moments where other players interact with one another in celebration. But, just to point out one instance where the contextual celebrations didn't show up. Was on a big stop on the goal line and the player seems to act like it was just a standard tackle. maybe they will see some of these and correct them. If not, it was just ONE instance I'm sure there are more times when the AI realizes it made a good play.

I hope..

I'm sorry, but I found this to be absolutely hilarious.
Instead of making such a comment, they NEED to be worried about getting their presentation on par with what's on TV now.

Is this the goal line stoppage that you are referring to? If so, I agree -- there should be some type of defensive celebration. Secondly, there wasn't really any TD group celebration of any sort when the TD was finally scored.

I honestly like how you bring up good points that are supportive of team Madden, and continually find Madden 15 stuff on the internet. It's like a "yin and yang" relationship with those who have a more critical eye.

But it can be a tad annoying when you either deflect or don't address what the user brings up. You have like a politician's way of approaching things. User leathrneck34 mentions that there was no defensive celebration when Toby Gerhart was stopped at the 1 yard line. Instead of addressing it, you skirt around that particular sequence to reference a completely different sequence (Chief's two player chest bump). Yes, we know defensive and offensive celebrations are present. But the problem is context, and how frequently? Does the celebrations or lack thereof fit the context? When a celebration is suppose to happen, does it? Are the types of celebrations appropriate to the situation?

Lesean McCoy's magnificent touchdown run straight into a celebration was absolutely stellar sequence of events. This was something that completely jumped out at me as authentically replicated. The celebration context was great. Where was the defensive contextual celebration when Gerhart was stopped at the goaline? Where was the offensive contextual celebration when Gerhart finally scored the touchdown?

Side Note: But strange that the commentator (was it AJ?) said McCoy called over his Tight-end to come celebrate? Um ... I didn't see where McCoy "called" over his teammate for a celebration. More importantly in real life, teammates naturally go congratulate their teammates... you don't really "call" over teammates to celebrate.

@38:52 mark - Lesean McCoy's Touchdown and proper solo contextual celebration

Good god. That looks fantastic!! It feels like you're really on the court. Player models look good. Real player voices commenting on the game. Wow. Amazing. Madden will NEVER reach this level. Lol.

I agree with those that were saying the replays were too short and zoomed in. The starting and ending EA screen wipes added together take as much time as the actual replay. The first showing of a replay should always be from regular broadcast camera distance, then the second replay a closer look. it does not look good the way it is right now, especially the ones that lock onto the football -- the NFL does not currently employ robotic cameras that lock onto a chip in the football to keep it in the exact center of the screen at all times.

I miss the overhead view of the stadiums, the chrome fly in does nothing for me..once again, this is not something I am going to see on sundays watching the NFL (although I wouldnt put it past fox, please EA stop giving them ideas). I loved the overhead stadium shots in last gen, and was excited to see them with the new detail of next gen..never got tired of them oh well. its all about the close ups in next gen I guess. I skipped madded 25, were they still in then?

The coach reactions are also too redundant. If you are going to cut to the coach after every poor play, then you better have a pool of 100 reactions to randomly pull from -- not show the same look-up-to-the-sky-in-disgust animation over and over. I love the no more cut scenes mantra, but they need way more reactions to really make it look good and keep it fresh and not ruin the immersion. too many players performing the exact same post play reactions at the exact same time. In fact in the one replay they were looking at, there was another Steeler right behind him doing the exact same animation perfectly in tandem. looks comical. again, more variety for immersion sake.

I do like a lot of stuff though, especially the corners and WR's going up to play the ball. Defensive cameras are a godsend, I hope I don't have to set it every play and it stays on whatever you chose last play? saw some 2-3 man tackles which always make me happy (need waaaay more of these please!).

I'm working so I don't have time to respond in detail. To answer your question about Gerhart, aj said different players have different celebration styles and that was supposed to be more reserved, ala Barry Sanders.
