I just don't understand the direction here, because whatever direction this game is moving in is away from NBA basketball. Live 10 was on track...what happened?!

This control scheme was a huge mistake. I know I'm not completely adjusted to it, but I doubt I ever will be anyways. It's just not the right scheme for a basketball game, I don't give a **** if it worked for hockey.

Live 10 had the best perimeter ball movement in any basketball game at the time of it's release, that's gone.

Live 10 had the best player movement and dribbling at the time of it's release, that's been revamped for the worse.

Live 10 had awesome responsive jump shooting with momentum that made sense and great looking sig forms, the shot "skill stick" is a joke (sorry I shouldn't be able to hit 10 straight contested 3's with Kobe, which I did, it just shouldn't happen).

Live 10 had vibrant, eye catching graphics that easily impressed anyone in the room, this looks like Sony's NBA 08...right down to the animations.

Live 10 was basketball, this is not basketball.

And live 10 was decent if they would improve from what they had their this could been a great game

Ignore the guy that's playing he clearly doesn't know how to play. Just watch the CPU play this authentic basketball and the nice shot selections that they take. Look at how smooth those shots are

It is not RB + LB, its RB + LB/X/etc, with LB being the icon for the Center, X the small forward and so on. The icons are slow to show up, but like Pared pointed out, if you just hold RB and tap the button, it will make the pass even though the icons didn't show up yet. The control is responsive, the icon appearance is sluggish.

The game looks much better when you zoom in Broadcast camera a couple clicks. I liked the look and I like it more now.

I thought the RS was your hands on Defense, yet the mapping is permanently Left on the RS is your right arm and Right on the RS is your left arm. This looks "right" on baseline cam, but on Broadcast, there is no intuitive logic for RS defense because Left is right and right is left.

That was terrible

and then at 2:45 mark JO shoots some awful goofy crap with his back to the basket as if shooting backwards in mid air then gets his own rebound and throws up another goofy looking shot.

those are the things that have been in Live since coming to next gen....they are the silly animations that have killed this series year after year. Why is that stuff still in the game 5 years later

On Superstar? Or Pro?

tha kid, RB+ A quick tap of a button does not make it any faster. Yes... I'll eventually get a pass off. but the quick passes are impossible. RB+ LB, RB+X, RB+A, RB+Y. none of them initiate a quick response pass

This is the only thing holding me back on a controls POV. Do i need to record a video of me playing and trying to icon pass?

I don't understand, it's too easy to drain 3's with hands in your face while fading away.

rEAnimator, thanks for being so candid with your responses. I have one question.

I did like the shot mechanic controls based on skill. I didn't mind other stick controls, but wasn't a fan of having the passing on the shoulder buttons & the face buttons losing most of their functionality. I know the demo gave an option to choose old school controls, but I didn't really want to play with them, I wanted to play with a hybrid, being able to use the stick controls, but at the same time have passing mapped to X button as well as others.

So my question, is it possible in Elite 11 for me to customise my controller options in the final retail version to a hybrid so that I can keep stick controls for offense, but move say pass to X or anything else like pro hop to triangle?
So I seem to remember Litty saying you can do something like this in the Mayo video, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say yes.

But I've never tried (or wanted to try) customizing the controls myself so I'm not speaking first hand.

I'll see if I can find out more for you though.

Can this be fixed re or at least if enough people want turbo can it be patched in as an option like on madden?
Anything is possible, but let's give it more than a day of feedback before we decide on anything

Once you get used to it, I think most opinions will change (except there are always some who would still prefer the old methods). For me, it was an easy transition (no old games baggage). I like it, it feels natural, and I can't imagine going back to the old ways.

whats WRONG WRONG WRONG about Elite:

1. Graphics: I read rEA saying this is Live 10 + improvements. May be graphics SHOULD be better, but they are not. Whatever EA did to it, made it look worse to most people, myself included. I think may be it is the matte finish on the models.

2. Animations: Some stuff looks very weird. The tweening between animations are often awkward. ELite has awesome controls, but no animations to match them.

3. AI: I saw bunching up of players. I saw ineffective, almost silly plays. I saw the way the Defensive AI sticking to me like glue: INSTANTLY reacting to my every action.

4. Frame Rate issues: especially noticable when ball goes out of bounds, and I get to throw the ball back in. Choppy as hell. This is also apparent, but less severe, during many moments in broadcast mode. I ran an AI vs AI match just to be sure.

5. Weird Logic: AI keeps fouling me when I am ahead in the game, and less than a minute is left.

6. Rocket propelled dunks still in the game. Youtube video also proved it.

7. Speed. Run a AI vs AI match in broadcast mode. Watch it, and tell me there is nothing wrong there. Too fast. All the above mentioned AI weirdness are also more apparent.

Conclusion:

The only thing that was right = Controls. Great direction there. It has to change sometime, and when change happens there are bound to be people not used to it. I'm sure Tony Hawk pros couldnt get used to Skate at first either.

But thats the only, VERY RIGHT thing for me.

EVERYTHING else was disappointing. Not necessarily bad, but just highly unpolished. It is especially saddening since I like the controls. If only other parts of the game are better. It is a real shame.
Of the things you mentioned I can say the rocket dunks and framerate problems will be fixed in the retail version.

Okay, so I've been following, and playing, both games since their inception. Heard that EA decided to go an alternate route this season and changed it from NBA Live to NBA Elite. Saw that the game got a lot of backlash and saw some of the vids and I could see why it did get said backlash from bball gamers.

Played the PS3 demo, started off at the tutorial. Thought to myself that it was much better than what I saw in the videos. The controls were pretty good, responsive, the shooting mechanic is strange though because you want to push up on the right stick to do an isolation move, but instead you shoot the ball. I did, however like that when you start a jumper, if you do not release the stick, it will result in a travel. Didn't like the dunking mechanic, my created guy was dunking like LeBron and Dwyane. Thought that the layup mechanic was actually pretty innovative how you move it from right to left, however, I didn't like that I was missing wide open layups. Graphics weren't bad, reflections off the floor were fine, my only gripe was that the floor felt too short length wise, but width wise it was fairly accurate. Then I played the 5 on 5...

My goodness, was it a different game that I was just playing? The graphics took a HUGE hit, the Staples Center felt very small and intimate, the crowd were all doing the same towel animations. I start with the ball, how do you pass? 5 second violation. The right stick? What was wrong with good ol' x? Okay fine. The icon passing felt like it was forced, I would try to bring up the icons, and like many others have said, there was a delay. The player movement in my opinion has take another step back from what it was last year. Players felt stiff and had no weight or momentum. I saw zero occurrences of Real Time Physics. The game is still animated. I was under the impression that with the new RTP tools, the dribbling and movement would look different each and every time, so what was the benefit?

The rim and net are some of my biggest grievances with EA's basketball game. It has literally looked the same since NBA Live 2006. If the ball hits the rim, it isn't going in. If it isn't a swish, it isn't going in. Pain in my butt, seriously.

I didn't mind the controls, but there was very little court spacing, switching players to play defense was unintuitive, as many others have said, hand in face or not, some shots just go in. The freethrows have improved, but that is really the only area that made me say okay cool.

This was not a shot at EA, and especially not a shot at the developers who devote their time to these forums. I'm fairly new here, but still, I've seen guys like rEAanimator and stepsix here conversing with us and answering our questions. And I can appreciate that as they could be spending time with their friends or families.

The saving grace for this game will be Player v Player, because player v CPU just appears to be, well behind the times. I hope that EA sticks with its goal of a 3 year cycle, and really pumps out a quality title in the coming years, because competition is a good thing. It allows for innovation, and it keeps prices down. Thanks to whoever read this.

On a nba sim scale, I would give it a 6 of 10. As a basketball game in general, a solid 7

I think that is very fair.

For me, the game has a "Man, I know it isnt polished and the graphics could be sharper, but geez..Im having fun" feel to it.

I LOVE the control I have..absolutely love it.

The gameplay on the surface, reminds me so much of NBA Live 2005 (The best Live of all time IMO)..

Unfortunately, to be fair and objective..as much as I have had love for Live over the years..I dont know how much value for $$ the game is going to give me long term...I dont want to run ranked games all of the time..I want to play in leagues. How is all of this stuff going to mesh together with franchise mode?

I like what goes on, on the court itself: Good collision detection, excellent sound and arena atmosphere, a great playcalling system, good court spacing and half court tempo, good on ball D, good help defense.

What I dont see is a lot of flair, and life.

The players, referees, bench, coaches, cheerleaders are just there to be there.

ITs hard to put into words. It looks like basketball, plays like basketball, but it doesnt have the personality....Does that make any sense to anyone?

ReAnimator, Is ICON PASSING (LT+RTplus button) any faster in the retail version. The activation of it and the initial pressing takes too long. its basically useless.

-ON ALLSTAR, a hand in the face or not, the CPU scores at will. There is no context to them making or missing.

-LOTS of in the paint ball mrphing THROUGH other players. I can't play D like that. It's wrose than LIVE 10

-anyone finding it hard to gain separation with Kobe against Ray Allen

-CPU teammates leave their man and arent quick enough to realize that they need to rotate back.

I can see the potential on a USER vs. USER front, as there is great control (not enough contact still imo) but a decent amount.. USER vs. CPU players, look away.

EDIT:GASOL was being guarded by RAY ALLEN in the post. I know how to activate the backdown mechanic (push in L stick) but how do you actually back down? I cant back down anyone with my body.
To enter backdown mode you press LB, not by pushing in the left stick.

Once you've engaged into backdown with the defender, press the left stick towrds him, then release. The press the stick towards him, and release.

Imagine it as if you were doing it in real life.

Try it in practice.

If you press and hold the defender holds his ground.

If you press/release, press/release you'll start gaining ground.

On defense, you hold your ground the same way.
