I'll obviously wait for the retail version to make a final judgment but, nothing really jumps out as super impressive. It truly feels like a mash up of last years Live and 2k. Not a bad thing imo because I enjoyed both games.
Right now, nothing about the demo has me ready to proclaim this game as the greatest thing of all time.
The player likenesses are off in such a way that it's almost distracting. Kobe, D. Fish, Pau, all look like imposters.
I cannot stop playing the demo! I've probably played it about 50 times now. The jump shooting (momentum jumpshot) is incredible. The most beautiful part of basketball is the pull up jumpshot, and we finally finally have got it! It's about time! I never thought being a chucker was so much fun, but the responsiveness and the control of those pull up jumpers is just awesome. Shooting jumpers is finally fun!
All right, most of my rave review is mainly has to do with the jump shooting. For the rest of the demo, here are some pros and cons:
Pros
* AI defensive awareness seems to be much better, considering the demo was set on default/pro difficulty. AI plays passing lanes and angles much better. Finally, stupid passes are going to be picked off. I hope on sim/all-stars and higher difficulties AI are even more aware as to not let players cut through the paint so easily.
* Players movement is much improved. Not nearly as herky jerky when changing direction and speed.
* In the paint help defense is better, but hopefully on higher difficulties it is a lot tougher to score inside. I can still score inside at about 70% of the time.
* Bad passes don't go right on target to the receiver as often. I love the bumbling catches and even the ones that force the receiver out of bound.
Cons
* Set jumpshots are too easy to block. This is primarily because big men are still able to cover too much ground when they jump. There's a vid of a play that someone posted that had Gasol blocking a set jumper by Garnett. Gasol was a good 10ft away from Garnett and was moving to the side. All of the sudden, Gasol levitate a good 2 1/2 ft and jump right into Granett's shot to block it with his elbow. WTF?! C'mon 2K, treat the big stiffs like the stiffs that they are! Big men has to really gather when they jump because they aren't that agile. When they do jump, they don't get up that high and they especially don't jump far. Let's face it, big men grab rebounds and block shots because 1. they are tall and use their length 2. they play inside where most of the misses go. But big men aren't that agile and athletic, lets make this easily noticeable please.
* I'm going to basically repeat the first con here but only this time apply it to rebounding. Once again, most big men are just as fast (moving in a straight line) as the smaller players, but they aren't nearly as agile (lateral movement, quick jump, jumping sideway, etc.) and athletic! C'mon, I want to see a big difference in movement between the big men and the smaller players. Having different rebounding, shot blocking, defensive stance, and lateral movement animations for big men and smaller players would be awesome.
* Not enough occasions of players bumbling catches when a bad pass is thrown to them. Still too many cross court passes that incredibly go right to the receiver hands. Hopefully, playing on higher difficulties this will not happen nearly as often.
* All players have man boobs. I acknowledge the better graphic and player models, but streamline the bulkiness of the player models a little more. They are still too thick, especially up on the chest area.
* I was hoping this year we would finally have wingspan difference between different players. Gasol and Bynum just don't look like themselves with those t-rex arms.
You have more cons than pros, really? I think the pros faaar outweigh the cons this year.
Regarding the "bumbling passes". Previous basketball games, including 2K10, did not have players bumbling catches at all and now that they're in you're complaining that there aren't enough?

That's just not true. I'm not here to defend 2K but I try to look at things with perspective. Saying they look like imposters is pretty far from the truth. Kobe and Derek look good, comparing it them year to year. There's no 2K game in the past who had them looking better.
It's amazing how people will critique a DEMO but I do realize that there are hardcore gamers who really knows about the x"s and o's and then their are casual gamers who want the perfect game no matter what....
I read some of these comments and wonder why dev's have minimal contact with us...But oh well just my thoughts.....
I agree with you. I've been playing the Live series since 95 and last year switched to 2K.
I've seen the evolution of the genre so I tend to look at all the additions and improvements rather than the drawbacks or cons cause there will always be things about games which aren't perfect.
Looking at the evolution of the last 15 years, there is really nothing I can complain about.
Great demo, game speed slightly reduced and is simply awesome, crowd response is great, u really feel the match. Tough as usual.
And as usual we got tangible differences between 360 and PS3. On Ps3 version crowd show less detail in game (one word: horrible), lots of jaggies also. Very much like 2k10, 360 seems the platform of choice even this year...
This is Bynum going after an offensive rebound in traffic. His head is near rim level.
There's another vid posted with Gasol blocking a KG's jumper with basically his elbow. Gasol was sliding side way and about a good 10ft from KG. Gasol just levitated (w/o gathering to jump) to stuff KG. Reminds me of those Chinese Kung Fu movies.
It befuddles me that some people complain of such trivial things like LeBron's headband is not centered when animation like this is still in the game. That is arcade-like. No player in the NBA can go up that high in traffic, let alone a relatively unathletic big like Bynum. And this is for an offensive rebound. C'mon! I just hate how 2K barely differentiate the agility and athleticism of a big and small.
Fix This, plus some awkward releases (e.g. Azubuike), some minor foot-sliding and hands not palming the ball right at times, and the game is going to be next to perfect.
But yeah, you got it right. Jumpshots are nearly impossible to block in today's NBA, and that's too easy in the game.
Not to mention that most defenders don't even bother to leave their feet on 85% of the jumpshots. They usually just put their hands up. That really hurts. even that video of Czar using the Celtics.. he clears Allen perfectly for a 3, yet still there's a hand right between ray-ray's eyes when he releases it.

The implication I made was that the awesomeness of the newly instated jump shooting outweighs any negatives that I have. Nonetheless, I wanted to list what I liked and didn't liked (or have reservations for).

Not a complain. Just merely wanted to see more of it.

Very true. I don't understand the need for an all out aggressive challenge the shot animation when the defender has zero chance of blocking the shot (well, 2K does allow the impossible to be possible as far as skying for rebounds and blocking a jump shot out of nowhere). A hand in the face animation (Shane Battier-like) or just a simple lazy nudge forward with a hand up animation would be much better. This would greatly improve spacing and the drive and kick game.
glad to see the "bumbling pass" animations arent just eye candy though...you can interact with them...Live 10's tip rebound animation pissed me off everytime I saw it...

Really...theres plenty in there now at least in the demo...this aint madden where players fumble every 5 plays
Jumpshots being too easy to block has historically been a problem in 2k. They need to focus more on different contest animations instead of wild blocks of jumpshots. Jumpshots should be extremely hard to block and in most situations it should be detrimental to the defense to leave their feet.
Excellent point, and I agree. Ironically enough, weakside shot blocking has been almost non existent. Looks to be improving with 2K11 though. Most blocks occur when a weakside defender come to help. Rarely does a defender block his own man's shot.
Blocking jumpshots being too easy and bigs skying for rebounds and blocks have been a shortcoming of EVERY basketball game ever made that had different player heights. So obviously, it's not something that's easily fixed. Why don't you guys take a deep breath, and focus on the progress the genre has made instead of making pages of the same gripe with little added value. We get it. We a agree. I sure THEY agree. Move on.

QFT!
some of you guys procrastinate waaaay toooo much....i actually never notice these things and if its really GLARING then i would call it out but man...
After playing for about an hour again last night I have to say that I am very impressed with this game. I am really wanting to see how the total control passing works. I played live 10 alot and it works really good on that game.
I don't want to get carried away with an impression of a demo so I am not going to write much other then I think this game will be Sports Game of the Year. I have to wait until I get the full game, but it really is that good.
Lead Passing is with you pressing the right bumper then using the right stick to pass right? i tried this out on the 360 and it works...my question is that will i see a variety of pass animations when using the stick instead of the button? if its anything like the shot stick then im definitely going to try and get used to using the stick to pass...
The only minuscule thing I had a gripe with is the fact you can't fake a pass while driving inside (unless I'm not aware of it).. I think it would be great if you can throw the defense off with a fake pass.. go up for a shot.. and then throw a pass back with Rondo.. it would be the cause for many highlight reels.. but so far from what I've noticed your player just stops as soon as you fake a pass because they need to use both hands to do so (if anyone else saw otherwise let me know)
2k please hear me on this matter....in madden we can fake a pitch while the quarterback is running, I was wondering are you guys able to fix the fake pass so that we can have the option to move while faking other than the Rondo animation that you have ? because i don't know about anyone else but being able to fake the pass on the run would be super cool....
I also just want to say that the momentum in this game is soo great..people are bashing it but if you play real ball you know the way the game is played IRL....over playing someone on defense will get you played alot on the court and I love the fact that if you guess wrong on what the offensive player will do, will get you broke off..lol the RTP in this years game is nice also....I can not wait till this game comes out...!!
Defense will be the difference this year for sure.....again last night Paul Gasol slapped the Sh - - out of Rondo's move to the bucket hard off the board..it was funny as hell...Kobe's moves to the basket are poetry in motion....all I can say is this game is a "DAY ONE PURCHASE"

I was going to post how much I love the various catch animations they stuck in this year; saw some beauties this morning playing the demo. One handers, players jumping/twisting in the air to catch passes, sometimes momentum carrying a player out of bounds, etc... imo they're very very well done. Can't wait to start seeing this stuff in replays
