Five Things NCAA Football 13 Must Do For Success

For years, the NCAA Football series has sold well and enjoyed great reviews.

But this year, it feels like the tides of public opinion have shifted, and a series that once seemed immune to criticism is now subject to a growing wave of discontent. It doesn’t take more than 5 minutes in the OS forums to see that dedicated sports gamers have a whole laundry list of complaints and suggestions.

In this article, I discuss five things that the NCAA Football 13 team could do to restore gamers’ faith in the series.

Let's just put it this way, NCAA Football 12 -- you won't be looked as a high point of the franchise.

Fix CPU defense

Yes, I’m beating a dead horse here, but there’s a reason that the CPU’s defense is so frequently maligned. Super linebackers and psychic defensive backs absolutely ruin the passing game. When CPU corners and safeties have eyes in the back of their heads, the deep passing game is devoid of any realism. Separation doesn’t really matter, and neither does reading the movements of the CPU DB’s. Instead, you’re stuck running screens, slants, and seam routes, while many of the routes in the game almost never work. Plus, doesn’t it seem like your No. 1 and No. 2 receivers are always blanketed, while your slot receivers are almost always open?

Only compounding the defensive problems is the fact that when you try to fool the CPU, it often won’t work because they know your play

Add variety to recruiting

When Madden added sleepers and busts to draft classes, it might have seemed like a subtle change. But to seasoned franchise mode players, sleepers and busts added a level of complexity and realism to the mode that had never before existed. In the world of college football, where three-star recruits can win the Heisman and many five-star recruits never start, it’s a shame that the NCAA series doesn’t include more variety in player ratings.

There’s no real thought required in recruiting; instead, you can just target the players with the highest star ratings and be relatively certain that you’re getting the best players. In real life, though, we all know that low-rated recruits often blossom into superstar players. That’s not really possible in the NCAA series, as all players improve at roughly the same rate, and their stats appear to have little impact on how quickly they progress.

Adding sleepers and busts would encourage players to stop blindly adding the top-rated players to their boards and instead look closely at their individual ratings, combing through lower-rated players to find overlooked gems.

Recruiting is stale, predictable and bland.

In addition, recruits are even handled poorly post-signing. It’s strange that there is no option to enter practice mode before you have to decide whether or not to redshirt a player, and that using a redshirted player in practice mode during the season burns their redshirt. That’s not how college football works.

There is a host of other problems with recruiting, including “athletes” that can only really play one position and the incredible difficulty of signing a fullback with a 6-star program. But adding sleepers and busts, as well as an under-the-hood potential ratings would be a massive improvement.

Finally, why are we still stuck using 70-man rosters? Yes, 70 players is a lot, but a real NCAA team has 85 scholarships to play with and room for walk-ons as well. I don’t like it when a video game has you cutting virtual athletes after a year or two on campus because their ratings aren’t high enough and your roster is too small. Oversigning is a serious problem in college football, and it would be nice if the NCAA series didn’t have an artificially small roster size that basically encourages you to oversign and cut later.

The atmosphere at college football games doesn't end after the coin toss.

Focus on recreating the college atmosphere

The team-specific entrances that EA introduced for NCAA Football 11 were a nice touch. But that kind of immersion needs to continue past the coin flip. The atmosphere at a big-time college football game is incomparable, so why does the NCAA series feel so flat? A few years ago, these games featured variable crowd noise that had tangible effects on gameplay, including botched audibles, and that little meter on-screen that indicated how crazy the crowd was.

Yes, it was a little gimmicky, but gamers could really feel the energy in notoriously loud stadiums.

In addition, why not include team-specific chants and in-game traditions? More activity on the sidelines? A less boring crowd? More stat overlays? The return of pre-game predictions? It’s great that gamers can upload their own sounds to play in-game, but that’s a lot of work that most people won’t be willing to do.

EA also needs to do a better job of integrating ESPN-style presentation; they have the license, so why does the game look so different from what we see on television every Saturday? The sights and sounds of college football are amazing, even on television. It’s a shame that so many gamers just put on some music and hit the mute button on NCAA 12.

Improve physics

One of my favorite ways to test a game’s physics is to create a player with extreme ratings and attributes and see how they perform. When you do this in NCAA Football 12, it becomes clear just how poor of a physics engine this game has. If I create a 350-pound halfback with 99 speed, 99 acceleration and 99 strength, I expect him to have enough momentum running with the ball that a 180-pound cornerback can’t just stop him in his tracks.

Watch a college football game – or ANY football game, for that matter, and it’s obvious that weight and strength matter.

But in the NCAA series, they don’t appear to matter much. Using power halfbacks just feels like a waste of time, and 220-pound defensive ends can hold up just fine at the point of attack. Under this physics engine, aside from their speed, most players just feel the same.

There are still features which we still haven't regained in the NCAA Football franchise.

Be creative and bring back old features

Custom playbooks and the coaching carousel were welcome additions, but not exactly genre-defining features. EA should look to 2K’s example and get creative. Why not bring back classic teams wearing vintage uniforms? One thing the roundly criticized mascot games demonstrate is that EA has the capacity to include a lot of different player models in the game. Why not drop some mascots in favor of old-time players in leather helmets? Also, why are we still unable to make custom plays? The underrated NFL Head Coach 09 had a terrific play editor that allowed for real creativity.

Another great feature in Head Coach 09 was the ability to export a team to use in Madden’s exhibition mode. It’s always frustrating to watch some of your favorite recruits close out their virtual careers, knowing that you’ll never be able to use them again. Imagine, though, being able to export your dynasty mode teams to use in exhibition games, or even take online to play against your friends. This feature would do wonders for the game’s replay value.

Clean up the bugs

Perhaps the most notorious bug in NCAA Football 12 is the “Transfer Failed” issue for online dynasties, which first appeared in the 2011 edition of the game. EA supposedly fixed this – after the college football season ended. Add in the no huddle glitches, problems with custom playbooks, and the extremely annoying player tendency bug, and you’ve got a robust set of glitches that affect core gameplay.

A lot of bugs and issues take some time to detect (like the lack of progression for young scouted players inFIFA 12), but some of the biggest issues with NCAA 12 became apparent after only a few hours with the game. When gamers can identify bugs within a day or two, it creates the impression that the game wasn’t tested enough. Already, many gamers have decided that for them, NCAA 13 won’t be a day one purchase. After last year’s issues, it’s hard to blame them for wanting to wait for a patch.

OS readers, what do you think of these suggestions? What do you want to see in NCAA Football 13?

Have the ratings matter more thus creating individuality between players and stop having arbitrary animations override everything, like the DT throw away animation to the OG no matter the rating of both players.

Also, stop having the CPU be psychic, especially when you call blitz, because it can and DOES screw up the CPU offense, especially screen plays where they audible the screen man to block, thus not having an active route running reciever on the play.
I hate that Animation. I give up so much sacks and run for losses because of that. DEs should get more pressure. I dont even worry about DEs. DEs should get a bulk of the pressure.
I got a 5 star DE(2nd in class) and I dont think he will get over 5 sacks in a season. Because he doesnt have great speed. But, I see a 74 DT that can get about 10 sacks a year because of that animation

The physics and CPU pass defense are my biggest hates. I don't even bother with recruiting power HBs anymore, because I know the 165 lb. CB for the CPU can stuff my 245 lb. back at the line every time. Ridiculous!! And that LB that can swat a pass intended for my TE 15 yards behind him...Really EA? My other favorite that no one has really tackled is the psychic CPU O-line. If you go back and watch the O-line when you blitz, they automatically know where the blitz is coming from as the ball is snapped, and will skip certain defenders to make sure all your players get blocked.

You are absolutely correct about the line. The are blitz reading, pancaking machines.

For me, its 3 things: the super linebackers, players playing like their ratings and the fact that the CPU defensive line throws away ur Oline as soon as the ball is handed off. Those actions are clearly linked and its a joke.

I remember last years promises from Haumiller saying suction blocking was removed, weight and size determines tackles and a new tackling engine. What a joke. Now people have noticed a small fry tackling high power RBs and how bad the lines are. I noticed that before the game launched. There is still suction blocking, and imo games in the passed had less phycic defenders in the passed. EA fire Haumiller and the team and bring in a competent team that really knows football.

Has anybody else ever noticed that on some broken tackles the defense still completes the tackling animation with their arms wrapped around an invisible person? They should fix that...

I don't think the team gets enough credit for removing alot of suction from this years title.

Great article, great read but lets face it none of these things can be address unless EA decides to take a year of both Franchies (Madden and Ncaa Football) because there simply isn't enough time for them to make all the necessary changes and fixes in one calendar year. This is my opinion but what i think they should do is create the mother of all patches with new rosters for the upcoming season for a nominal fee and focus on spend one part of the year either developing a new engine for their games or rebuild the one they have from the ground up that will last the rest of this current gaming generation (similar to what they did with Madden when the ps2 came out. They then should spend the second year trouble shooting, to help with this they can get feed back for a small group gaming community by inviting some reps from differnt sites like OS to help with the beta testing and give honest feed back on the gameplay maybe some of the mods can help with this by suggesting some of the more dedicated players base on their post they could create a criteria figure out who would best fit this need. I think it would go along way toward helping EA get on track with the current gen.

Well, I think most people are referring to when defensive players are clearly running in a certain direction or angle and suddenly that direction/angle is reduced/nullified/changed/taken-away by a blocker. There is not one natural interaction between players in this game and it's the #1 killer to the game.

# 71 Oraeon1224 @ 01/31/12 07:58 PM
3 things:

1) Fixing CPU defense: This has to be tied to actually fixing CB/WR interactions as well as QB accuracy. In its current form CB don't properly coveragre or react to the ball like in real life (looking at the ball or watching the reciever), there is also no fighting for the ball in the air. NCAA cheats with unrealistic responses to avoid to many big plays. If you "fix" this, then you have to have less accurate quarterbacks. If you change threshold and coverage and have open recievers the CPU quarterback never misses (neither does the player unless you nerf your QB accuracy slider). You have to have poor quality deep throws by quarterbacks to match the increased number of open recievers. Otherwise it will be the wide open gameplay people complained about in the past where the deep route was an instant 6. I agree with fixing it but only if the CPU and human quarterback deep throws don't look like Tom Brady or Payton Manning on their best days.

2) Your reference to versus testing is a bit suspect. While versus shows a problem with the game I don't know that the CPU is cheating by knowing the play. There are definite times when you can trick the CPU by your playcalling, but usually only against poor quality teams and not in practice mode but by repeatedly running other play types then fooling them based on down and play type (i.e. practice can't run playaction or draws). What I think he has uncovered in his videos is a serious oversight by the developers. Each player has a play recognition slider. I have a feeling the way this game works is at the moment of the snap the console runs the play and against the AI defensive play recognition rating and comes up with a success or failure. Then the player reacts immediately by knowing the play. What the EA team needs to do is have the play recognition quality limit the reaction time and only really result in a change of defensive play once the ball is handed off/fake handed off. I think currently at the snap the play recognition kicks in and the defensive player reacts accordingly, please change it to the handoff EA. Either way EA really needs to fix this since it really does hurt the game.

3. Fix blocking: From one of versus videos a main problem is that blockers don't help for second then release to get to the next level or pickup blitzes. This results in too many blown up run play from safeties or corners (also EA programed cover 2 DB/WR interactoin to not block!!!). Real football works on downfield blocking something they are missing.

I don't think ea will do anything until they lose there rights and other companies can start making football games again. Go hawkeyes in 2012!!!!!

Back shoulder throws near sidelines.
the better your qb the better the throw

# 74 22cedric @ 01/31/12 09:06 PM
I heard that commentary will have a big improvement this year & that they want to add ESPN College Gameday into the game.

# 75 Playmakers @ 02/01/12 02:24 AM
I don't think the Classic teams created by EA would be very realistic.....i mean if your going to create those teams and players i don't want to see 50 players on each team rated 90 overall and some guy like Earl Campbell with 99 speed and acceleration the same as Deion Sanders

The uniforms would be great to have....

But this series needs to spend time on the CPU AI behavior and animations....there's enough custability for us to make our Classic teams and players probbaly better than anything EA could do anyway

So please EA just focus on gameplay for once

I wish i could just sit through a development cycle and sit down and talk with the producers just to get a gage on these guys and its not just ncaa its madden and even nba 2k12. I find myself wondering do these guys even have a passion for the sport of the game that they are creating or are they simply just doing what they went to school for. I have a hard time believing that these guys are college football buffs, I maybe wrong (BARKLEY VOICE) but it dosen't seem like it. Now let me say that there is some good things in NCAA 12 BUT for us to be six years in to next gen we shouldnt be dealing with some of these issues.

1. Crowd (self explanatory) A game in knoxville shouldn't sound like a friday night HS game

2. penalties- 6 years in and its the exact same as when the game was initially launched which i think is RIDICULOUS no PI's no defensive holding no illegal hands to the face ect ect and EA if you guys add this please dont make them phantom calls where you get called for Defensive holding and you go to the replay and you see your DB has done nothing to warrant a penalty take a page out of 2ks book add animations where we can see in the replay " oh yeah he was holding" I want a reason to cuss my guys out

3. Injuries same as penalties add some animations showing a guy twisting his ankle or tearing an ACL it adds a lot to the game. Also I hear everyone complain about super LB's how about these super TRAINING STAFFS who can eyeball injuries and have a diagnosis in 3 plays how about a simple can he go or not. if not after the game and MRI you should then know how long your guy will be out

4. CB/WR play needs a complete overhaul (MADDEN TOO) I like the new diving catches and thats about it. If I can dive for a pass on command WHY cant I Jump on Command its so frustrating playing with Tenn and watching Justin Hunter jump 3 inches off the ground for a pass. it seems they are so worried about rocket catching they are dumbing down recievers that can jump out the building and thats not right. they need to find some kind of middle ground to allow this without going from 1 extreme to the next guys leaping all over the place

5. spring games not major but it would be nice

6. Signature animations- now i know its a football game but still no reason they cant add different throwing motions, jukes, pass rush moves ect

Bring back the screen shaking!!!

When I go into Death Valley or the Horseshoe, I WANT TO FEEL LIKE I'M THERE... 100,000+ Fans is LOUD!!! Make it LOUD!!!

Give players WEIGHT and Momentum... There is no reason why a 180lb CB should be blowing up a 260lb Tailback... It simply defies logic... Also, there is no way that a DLine compiled of players under 250lbs should be able to hold their own vs a OLine with Guys over 300lbs. Those little DLine guys should be pushed around and shouldn't be very effective at stopping a Power Running Attack...

I don't care WHO (ea / 2k) makes the game... I JUST WANT A GOOD PRODUCT!!! Something that truly represents NCAA Football on Saturdays... This game does not do that good enough...

I'd like to add one more thing: improve TeamBuilder

-Being able to add 3, 4 or 5 logos (more than just 2... lame)

-Being able to adjust the size of logos (some logos look tiny on the helmets, even if they are actual college helmet logos)

-More helmet design options, more jersey design options, more pants design options

-Having 4 sets of pants to go with 4 jerseys

-EA Sports is apparently licensed to have Nike, Adidas, Under Armour logos in this game... why not give us the option to attach those logos to the uniforms?

The website for NCAA 12 doesn't even look different than the TB site for NCAA 11.

NSD should be a little bit of a bigger deal. It should be more top notch players that don't commit til after week 5 of offseason. I'm not a fan of ppl being able to flip Hard Commits but if more ppl soft commit I don't have a problem with that.
