I am hoping that some of the new animations are new diving/jumping/lunging catch animations for outfielders in particular. I personally, think the ones they have now lack "excitement/flair" for lack of better terms.

I want to see a catch animation play out that makes me say "WOW! What a catch!"

Seems like a good question to ask in today's stream. The ratings based and the on/off part.

Let's also hope they've toned down the frequency of the 'outfielder drifts off to the side and drops glove' animation for catching fly balls. Not every play requires that kind of adjustment.

Agree. From that Heyward catch, plant, and throw sequence, it looks like we might get some refreshing animations.

I wish they would take out the catch where the outfielder is running one direction but he stretches out his glove hand/arm in the opposite direction of where he is running to. Always thought that was an odd animation that you rarely see irl.

I am hopeful.

I honestly don't mind that animation but it plays far too frequently. New catch animations are certainly needed.

I'm more pleased at the news that the computer won't be making perfect diving grabs every time anymore! That's what made them seem so routine imo, if I ever manage a diving catch I'm well pleased.

On the whole player models thing, it might just be the way I am, but I couldn't care less, I won't even notice after an hour. New animations and more realistic gameplay I will enjoy and will make a big difference to me, but what stuff actually looks like fades from my view within minutes of noticing it. But then again, I'm not that observant of details as my wife would testify. I probably couldn't even say what colour the walls of our house are, it's all just background to me after the initial noticing.

Ha true! But I'd prefer them over static jerseys.

But the more I think about the current ones, the more I realize that it's not necessarily player models themselves that aren't great. It's really just the cloth physics on the jerseys that could be improved.

They could keep all the same overall model and animations intact, but if they could make the jerseys have more free-flowing physics to them so that they don't look so stiff, similar to NBA 2k's jerseys, I think it would do wonders for the look of the players. Have the jerseys bounce slightly when players are running, let them subtly blow in the wind, twist when players swing, etc. Stuff like that would make a big difference to the look and atmosphere of the game, without having to go and re-do the player models entirely, animations and all. I don't know how possible something like that would be to implement, but it's gotta be easier than changing the entire animation engine for all new player models.

Seeing the slight change in Arrieta's sleeves in that pic makes it seem like they are going more down the route of improving jerseys, and hopefully something like more advanced cloth physics is not too far down the line.
Cloth physics can certainly add to it, but it definitely boils down to player models and animations.

With regards to player models, cloth physics isn't going to change the length of the arms, torso, versus a player's leg length. It also isn't going to change the shoulder, waist to hip ratio. It's not going to change a player's vertical height. It's also not going to change how the neck region looks when the person turns his head.

With regards to animations, the number one problem I've always seen as to why the game doesn't truly capture the essence of player movement comes down to how the team handles motion capture is in game adrenaline rush. In game adrenaline rush is missing during motion capture sessions. Secondly, I suspect either none of the MoCap pitches are thrown at 90+mph velocity which is why MLB the Show Pitcher's whole body follow through doesn't look as authentic as they could be. An outfielder 395 feet away from homeplate isn't going to be captured via MoCap sessions if the MoCap artist doesn't have the same amount of "space/distance" to work with. If he doesn't use the same force, velocity, effort, arm/torso/shoulder/legs to throw a ball 395 feet (or the distance from him to the cutoff man) during the mocap sessions, it's not going to replicate what we see on TV or how the body actually moves.

His arms look better to me too.
Wow, no he looks far too short for his head size. Sorry but it's disproportionate.

Still not as disproportionate as Tommy LaStella

Couldn't agree more. I never use the redsox so I never noticed.

It's good to be positive, but I literally have heard this same phrase in some amount of words for four years lol. I'll just wait to see what they have. This is getting closer to what the final product will be. They literally have another month or so at the latest until gold.

Things are looking decent, but don't kid yourself. This is what you are getting minus a few things they will show us in the previews.
Hey, they've cracked the lighting code once before during crunch time and by god I have faith that they can crack it again.

If this is a style guide issue then there's a bigger problem than we think. I just hope this stuff is taken into consideration sooner rather than later.

Besides this, I loved the video and all the improvements. Can't wait for Thursday!
I made a post about the red being off in 2014 when the game first went to ps4, and it still hasn't been improved, probably not enough people said anything about it.
