MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Hopefully as new info is released, you do decide to get the game and enjoy it. A lot of people will miss your slider sets.

I kind of agree and kind of disagree with your first statement. Yes it comes across as neither arrogant or entitled, however it is not really constructive criticism. Psycho states there are things that go untouched each year, but he doesn't really say what can make them better.

I understand more and varied commentary would make the game seem fresher and such, but the one thing we don't know is the limits they have to work within. Maybe it costs $100,000 to get someone in the studio to record some lines. I also think that sometimes we forget that an announcer at a live sporting event has unlimited access to the entire english language and can make comments right out of thin air when a game is very limited.

For franchise what needs to change? What is he looking for that will keep him engaged? I can say I don't like something but if I don't state what would make it better then really all I am doing is criticizing, not constructively criticizing.

As for music, I don't listen to it so it doesn't bother me at all. Now again, we have 50% of people in this scenario (1 and 1) that have absolutely different opinions about this specific area. So as a developer where do you draw your line? It may come down to cost as they already have paid for the rights to the songs or perhaps it is an area they don't think they need to focus on. This is where they have to determine costs and benefits in order to make the most money for them because that is really what it is all about. I would also argue that both Psycho and myself are what you could call "hard core" players, so now which if they change the music are they against a "hard core" guy or if they don't are they also against a "hard core" guy.

Now I am not saying that Psycho is right or wrong. He purchased the game and has every right to want what he wants. All I am saying is the devs need to here a why or a how not just a what. I love this game, it is one I continue to play year round, which I don't say about any other game, but there is definitely room for improvement, areas of which I have discussed in other threads.

The one thing I do wish for, and I know that it would never happen because it may come across as a sign of weakness or such, is that the devs explained sometimes why things maybe can't be changed at times, or why something may never (at this time) be implemented. Such as maybe why they can't have 20,000 new lines of commentary each year or why they don't change the music.

One last thing, as for the same old game comments. Baseball is baseball. Each year 25 players from 2 teams play on the same fields doing the same things. You can't change things every year to make it fresh when it really is the same thing. Unlike any other game but sports games, you can't change a location or colour scheme and have a "brand new game". Sorry, it's a pet peeve of mine.

I'd believe that.

Not the best that it's "almost the same game," but that nothing will convince you to purchase this installment so long as it maintains its core elements.

I have that kind of thing with Madden. The game can continue to improve, but I'm not looking for a better game with them... simply a different one. 2K used to do something else for me, whether it was the player models, camera, broadcast crew, sprint/charge control system, playcalling style, running/tackling engine, menu system... there is no one specific thing, but a multitude of things that have either been similar in Madden or different enough from what I loved in 2K, that the only thing that will get me to purchase another football game is either if it's not like Madden or if it is like 2K.

It's a shame as well, because I believe Madden is an objectively great game these days... but it's either too stale or too much that is not my taste, and only changing it can sway my decision, not so much improving it.

Hey, but the guy at 0.07 named "Smalls" looks like Ricky "Wild Thing" Vaughn from the film Major League !

People have been talking about models, fields, animations, franchise, and other things now for literally years. We've heard devs chime in too. But from 14-17 I just don't see it. I don't see this game changing to become a photo realistic sim or even close to getting there. When I boot up that trailer it looks almost exactly like 14 or 15 to me from a perspective of: hey I just entered the stadium, what beautiful details all around look at how well kept the field is, look at how nice and lively everything looks.

I just don't see that with this game anymore. So I will wait. One day it will be something I want to get into again.

I totally understand from someone like you that does a lot of work on this yourself with no pay that you need to skip a year. I would too. There is no point right now in doing all that work just for another year of baseball.

I will still look forward to the new details and reveals they have going for sure.
I feel the exact same way, it's come to the point where i'm not even really disappointed anymore. I just expect the player models and other small details that bother me to go relatively unchanged. That way when these things are improved upon, and not just by little increments, i'll be pleasantly surprised, which beats being disappointed every year.

Ok this has run its course. We are at the "This is what is wrong with this game, I am not buying" it stage again. For some of you who are not buying the game this year, you sure are spending a lot of time talking about it?

# 408 Bullit @ 12/18/16 03:08 PM
Ok so here is the way this is going to go.

I am going to open this thread back up. The conversation will stay on topic, the conversation will stay adult, there will be NO trolling or any other assorted nonsense.

From here on out if there are any more issues there will be no more warnings, no post to stay on topic or correct behavior, you are just going to get banned. We will start with a week off from OS and then go from there.

Gentlemen, especially newcomers to this section, I am not kidding with this. Those of you that know me, understand what it has taken to get to this point. We are all going to get things heading back in the direction that this part of OS was known for.

I don't remember where I read it (either YT or FB comments), but although most people love that they have Griffey much more down pat, they were a bit up in arms over the way his front side slides open on the follow-through. I sort of understand where they're coming from, but it's not incredibly unrealistic either (just a strange transition, is all).

Just for comparison's sake, Blzer is back at it again (EG, get it while it's hot!)... I often film my softball players for batting practice, and one day as my assistant coach and myself were calibrating the machine I took some swings off of it. The below gifs are a depiction of how the front leg can slide open due to torque:

Spoiler

People mention my ankle looking like it's "breaking," but all that does is preventing it from opening up even more than it does. So my swings are probably not the best example of what can actually happen since I try to keep my front side closed as long as it can.

I know the transition on Griffey's is a little "sudden," but it's not way off. Still would be nice if it transitioned more smoothly, but I think that since it's branching to the normal game's swing, since the game can't account for whether a ball will be a home run or not until contact, they won't be able to get that transition any more smoothly than they already have.

Can't wait to play as him though! His stance looks so much better than in years past, and now we can at least play with him as a 19 year old.

I want to speculate a possible RttS mode with Griffey, where you get to play out his career, beginning from the early years and redefine his path to glory. Maybe even the Kingdome is in the game, who knows?

Damn dog, thats an ankle breaker.

The Kingdome would be high on my hopelist of old stadiums. With Junior in, the Kingdome would be a logical choice. Only the Astrodome would be higher on my list, amongst domes.
Heck I'd even settle for a fake generic SCEA-created dome.

Heh, that's what I always did to keep my front side closed, ironically so. Doesn't hurt at all.

Given that we have old Yankee Stadium and a number of new legendary players, I am hopeful as well. I don't know what kind of memory they need to add more classic stadiums (on top of their new closed roofs), but should they have a mode where you can follow Griffey's career I think it would only be logical they have that stadium. Then again, that would also mean you would need all of the other classic stadiums on top of it, so maybe that kind of mode doesn't exist. Makes you wonder what "ages" you can select for Griffey then, in that case.

I am less hopeful about other classic stadiums though, because they have Yankee Stadium from years past. Not that they didn't have to recreate it, but at least they have a good general model for it already.

Are they ever going to get new announcers? It's so stale. I've boughten it every year from 08-15. Can't do it again until they completely revamp the announcing. I will just keep playing 15.

The small changes will no longer justify a $60 purchase. If you can't make significant changes than don't release the game every year. I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I'm ok boycotting this game alone. They'll have to earn my money. I'm sorry for going off but I sense that the lack of competition is hurting this franchise.
I am with you. Problem is, no other company can put our a baseball video game. SCEA has no competition.

Does anyone else think the daytime sky/clouds look different this year?

I know its a very insignificant thing, but it kinda jumped out to me as being different this year.

Other companies could, they choose not to.

Didn't look too different to me, but any improvements are welcome. I'm waiting to see if any changes were made to day/night transitional lighting myself.

Really hoping for some more classic stadiums this year. I would pay $100 to get Tiger Stadium in the game.

u know u can just mute the game and pop music on right? i just dont get how announcers can make anyone not buy a game that you "play" thats like not playing cuz the crowd isnt cheering for the right team

I understand your point of view and respect your decision to not purchase this game further. But I don't think I could keep playing 15 as my choice though. The fix's to the Pitching alone, not throwing the ball into the stand on every pick off throw, actually being able to pick off a runner at first etc Make 16 a more viable option to me to keep playing for a few years.

Different strokes; different folks. Maybe commentary gives him an authentic sense of immersion.
