MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Yes a lot better.

Hope Retro mode can be played h2h. Was also hoping no bunting in retro mode but was told that will not be the case. Didn't realize bunting existed in video games back then.

All I want are editable options and service time in the editor....

I know, not sexy requests. Would make my life easier.

Listen...I am all in for having as much retro/classic stuff as possible. Uniforms, stadiums, etc. That's a no brainer for me. Customizable league set ups as well. Love it. Wish we had it. I'd never put the controller down.

However, SDS can not, and will not, add some of these things because it does not offer them a satisfactory ROI.

In addition, to do them right, they need the blueprints and schematics so they can reproduce.

That is also money out the door. How many people buy the game for these additions? Not enough to recoup the investment I would bet. I could be wrong.

DLC chargeable content? Possible. But as of now SDS has determined that they do not want to go this route and I am sure there are financial implications driving that as well.

Too many man-hours would need to be spent pulling these things together without a real business case where you could justify the expense and quantify the additional revenue.

That's my opinion. Ramone may "thumbs down" this post. I obviously do not know the ins and outs. I am only stating what I believe could be some of the considerations they have to take into account and why we have not seen as much attention to classic teams as you have outlined.

C
All do respect capa, I just reject the notions above. You can talk about ROI all you want. Not EVERY aspect of a product has to turn a financial profit. There's some things you just do to add to the quality of a product, and the consumer experience.

Again

It has all been done BEFORE. It is being done CURRENTLY. There are numerous examples of sports video games reaching a point where they decided it was OKAY to invest "man hours" and some money into fleshing out the experience of their game with retro content.

Why is MLB The Show the game, its development team, and its audience, so markedly different then?

I don't believe it is, and I think, if we are being optimistic here, we will see that this year.

On a separate note

Do you still have any of your old rosters you mentioned bud? I'd love to try all of them in case this Retro Mode falls through again.

- Grounders down the line are singles 99.9% of the time (though this looks to be fixed in show 17)
- Pitcher not covering first on grounders to the first basemen resulting in an unrealistic number of infield hits.
- Bunting is ABSURDLY over-powered . . . still.
- The way the CPU manufactures rallies is insanely unrealistic. Real rallies are usually not comprised of the following sequence: error, walk, single, single, single, single, double, single, HR, single, k, double play.
- Animations on fly balls still kick in too late on hard hit liners, resulting in funky looking fly balls that hit fielders in the head, shoulder, stomach, etc. And the worst part is these are ruled HITS!
- The strike zone is still called WAY too high and WAY too inconsistently. Yes, umpires miss calls, but the complete lack of consistency for every umpire in the game is mind-blowing.
- Grounders up the middle that ricochet off the pitcher, yet the pitcher seems completely unfazed as he retrieves the ball in a second to get the runner at first.
- Cat-like reflexes from catchers jumping out of crouches to catch pop flies and field grounders.
- WAYYYYY too many infield pop ups and dinky ground balls in front of the plate.

This is just off-hand. Yes, the graphics can use an overhaul and the player models and grass look antiquated, but man, if you fix these nagging gameplay issues, I'd be more than satisfied.

1. The grounders down the line being singles 99.9% of the time is not true. I see a lot of grounders down the line that are doubles.
2. Pitchers always cover the bass like they should.
3. I wouldn't say bunting is over powered per say the problem is if you get a bunt down even if it is not a good one CPU will still just throw the ball over to first instead of throwing the ball to second and because of that it is to easy to move a guy over.
4. Don't see how CPU is unrealistic when it comes to that just sounds like you are not good at knowing how to use your bullpen.
5. Don't see any odd animations are fly balls. A few years ago this was a problem but not any more.
6. Yes they do call high but I don't really see it has a problem because by the rules they call what is a strike a strike its just in real life you don't get high pitches has much and yes they are inconsistence but they are just has bad in real life.
7. Ok this one I real give you but the amount of times pitchers get hit by a ball up the middle in mlb 16 was much less often and really lack of injures is kind of a issue in ever sports game ever made.
8. Don't see this.
9. Again I don't see this.

That is 9 problem and I would say 7 of those are not true and the other 2 are kind of small.

Ok this has just turned into another "this is whats wrong with The Show, no there is nothing wrong with The Show" thread. We are so far of topic. we can't even see the topic from where we are.

It was a one minute teaser, there will be more to come. But this one has run its course.

Agreed.

Talk about the trailer or move on.

Ok I opened this back up. Stay on topic. Then next time I close it, it stays closed.

Patience is already wearing thin with the nonsense this year folks. Millennium has not posted the Ban Hammer speech yet, but believe me it is in full force already.

Thanks Bullit.

After watching the trailer, yet again , one thing I'm curious to see/hear about is changes, if any, to batted ball physics. That shot down the first base line just looks pretty.

Yes it was. It had that side spin and life to it, and looked headed towards the corner in a way we don't really see in current or recent games.

Physics is the #1 thing on my list this year, so I'm curious as well. If there aren't significant changes to bat/ball physics, I'm just gonna keep trucking right along in '16.

I look forward to (hopefully) hearing more about this topic in future trailers and announcements.

Game looks fantastic to me, and I'm pumped about the Griffey mode.

Some of y'all just have incredibly, unrealistic expectations.

I cant remember if he was or not but I really hope Vlad makes it into this next game. Vlad, Griffey and Dowd (or w/e his name is every other year) would be nasty

Dowd? As in John Dowd? Pssh, give me Reggie Stocker any day...

Like others, I'm hoping ball physics have seen some upgrades. And like others, if this trailer follows the pattern of the last couple years, the quick appearance of something slightly different sometimes hints at a change to be announced later. So those quick glimpses of those hard ground balls hooking down the lines hopefully is leading up to an announcement of even more upgrades and refinements to the ball physics.

Like Ramone implied, maybe we'll learn more when they do the rewind on the trailer?

looked alright to me, but nothing to make me leap and scream about either, i mean this is why i said what i did over in a madden thread, the expectations of video games is out of control now, i mean really its only been 5 years and people are already saying ps4 is old i mean what ? are you kidding me? they bring out a ps4 pro and a new xbox s, which both imo is not worth it at all, yeah new chip sets, but games are not running at a real 60 fps 4k capture, i mean its just ridiculous to me where gaming has gone.

next year xbox scorpion, you got all these virtual mask you strapping on ya head & face i mean, you got all that and its still not progressing, and i see the same thing with the show, yeah it looks good but so does 16 at least good enough for me, i'm sorry but all of these game company's are doing the same exact thing all to get that $ and i'm stopping it for myself, until i see some real innovation im done and i dont mean with sony i mean buying and supporting gaming period, i'll play what i have.

there are people ranting and raving right now about how the ps4 original model is getting the shaft over ps4 pro, because games on that system like the last guardian and final fantasy are doing 20 -25 frames per second less than the newer system, which both games are very average at best imo not to mention this no mans sky that was suppose to be the game that was be all end all game of the year....... and i'm not going to even get started on this virtual in game mess, and im not just speaking the sports genre's this pay to win crap all over is just silly...... stuff that should be coming with a game is not, and people are being very gullible to it, i have even been caught up with it myself, its just im at the point where i finally see it and im sick of it.....

look its your money, you spend it how you please, for me i'm done there have been a lot of people asking for the montreal expo's uniforms in this game, hmn promoting a retro mode? i wonder are they in the game after what 6 years of asking ? retro stadiums? smh... im on a wait and see with this game this year, and that goes for all games from now on, done pre-ordering stuff... i have not nearly seen enough to hype me through the roof like i've seen some people posting here smh..

edit..

oh and the close up cams, players dancing animations close up sliding animations those have been done in years past... these new ones just has more color added to them and the motion is faster and not slowed down... so whatever i guess... i aint buying it until i see solid foundation and so far it aint there, i can pop in sega or nintendo for a real retro experience...

I noticed a new hairstyle. Some crazy Simon Phoenix from Demolition Man mixed JT Marsh from Exo Squad hairstyle.

Same faces though. But that's unavoidable. Can't allow players to upload previous RTTS saves and make you rebuild their faces from scratch...

I mean, I would do that. But that probably wouldn't play out well with the hoard of perpetual complainers. I'll buy this. Play it for the long boring summer months between the NBA finals and end of NFL preseason and then trade it in for credit for NBA 2K18, same as always. Heh.

Game still looks good though.

I plan on finding a way to rip the background music for Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball (SNES) and putting it on loop when playing Retro Mode.

No date/time has been mentioned but I went back and looked at the time difference between last years trailer and the rewind and it was about 10 days. So maybe Monday or Tuesday?

Small sample obviously, but it looks to me like the animations are STILL choppily put together; you can very clearly see the breaks. Also the models and animations and everything all look similar. Which makes me scared that, once again, the game is running on the exact same engine with another coat of paint, which does not bode well for ball physics and hit variety.

There was a shot down the line that seemed to be featured, so I hope that means that maybe I'll see one get to the corner every once in a while? That didn't happen once last year, outfielders were way too quick to the ball in the corners to where getting doubles was really too hard. But I also worry that it will just happen all the time and thus be a problem. I'm cautiously optimistic.

That's all I can really do after reading that. Holy crappola Batman.

We have a robust roster making community who provides amazing classic rosters for our enjoyment every iteration.

The other things you speak of.....they have already said doubtful for most of those for years now.

Get over it.

PLUS THIS NEW RETRO MODE LOOKS LIKE POOP....YOU WANNA HONOR GRIFFEY BY DUMB DOWN GAME PLAY...IF I WANTED TO PLAY RETRO ID PLUG IN MY NINTENDO....MLB THE SHOW SHOULD ADD OLD TIME ROSTERS TO THEIR GAME...THATS HOW YOU HONOR PAST PLAYERS...AND MORE OLD TIME BALLPARKS...if san diego studios would sell old time rosters for different seasons as add ons that would be MAJOR PLUS.....and wheres expansion option... build your own stadium...relocate options...we get crumbs every year....by the time im 100 years old they might have a great game...don't know if the planet will still be here...but ill try to hold out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am curious to see gameplay footage myself and check out how much ball physics have changed, but that's the reason we hold out for new info... we're willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

For instance, I just saw some shots there that shows they are still rolling with their own form of a dusk sky, one which I'm not a fan of (when it gets all orange and brown and such before getting into blackness, instead of a deep-seeping blue), but I'm holding onto hope that they jump into different design decisions down the line and they just haven't finished with it yet. Also hoping someday for that authentic broadcast cam. These are small things for some, but big things for me.

Nevertheless, something keeps bringing me back to this game. That must mean it's because it's a great product, no matter the "staleness" that has plagued it for others. This trailer grabs me, yet again, like they always have. The Retro Mode is something that I'm looking forward too, though... so long as it's not just a camera change with some 8-bit music.
