MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Show me the old Yankee Stadium with the Ballantine scoreboard and I'll get excited.

I bought the last three games day one, so I can express a little frustration here with this years huge addition of R.B.I. Baseball mode and NB cleats. What this game desperately needs is a commentary system similar to what Madden has. You don't need Joe Buck or Harold Reynolds. This will help the grind of the 162 game schedule. The regular season games need to feel unique (like the NBA 2K series). The menus absolutely have to be improved. Roster management (scouting, minors, etc.) needs work as does the AI of the computer controlled teams. This isn't wishlist stuff here. Rain delays and better crowd animations are.

I'd love real sponsors (Citgo anyone?) and classic teams, but I understand the financial hurdles there. I am not interested in individual classic players. I don't want to integrate Jason Giambi with my Nationals franchise. I also don't give a fig about Ken Griffey Jr. The money Sony gave him could have been better spent elsewhere. Speaking of which, can the menu soundtracks be dropped?

Yes, it's a one minute trailer with pre-beta footage. However, when has the final build ever looked significantly better? Another member asked why with three months to go is there little information about this game. It's a great question. They have no competition. What little they did have (R.B.I. Baseball) has been addressed.

I want this series to evolve. Even NHL is making tremendous strides though after that catastrophe two years ago, there's nowhere to go but up. NBA 2K is a benchmark and Madden is excellent. Singing Sony's praises every year isn't going to change anything. Jersey wrinkles aren't ground breaking.
This is all fine and well, but your claim was that the last two years were nothing but roster updates. That claim was shot down and you responded with a wishlist.

And just because something doesn't "impress you" doesn't mean it isn't important to others.

How does Matty V's voice set the game back 10 years? I'd be a very sad panda if they ever replaced him. The dude is all over MLB Network these days, so he's even more relavent than he was 10 years ago...by a long shot.

Yes, I hope for more fluid, dynamic commentary, but don't get rid of Matty!

That said, I definitely agree about the post game animations. There needs to be more of a variety instead of the same stuff every game.

That's embarrassing.

Also can I get a regular block font in DD please. I'm not the Red Sox or the gimmicky clown baseballers.
Actually what is embarrassing is you don't know your facts, just your opinions. Griffey did not add the Jr until later in his career.

best part about the complaints about this mode is that everyone is going to forget about is as soon as the next piece of news drops

That's pretty harsh considering nowhere in that video does his jersey have the Jr. on it which to my knowledge he never wore on his jersey which is what he's talking about.

When NBA 2K did this with Jordan it made sense because 2K has classic teams (a lot of them). I do not see the purpose or marketing behind Griffey being in the game or on the cover. What am I supposed to do with him? I don't play DD so his existence is completely irrelevant. Rather than waste time on gimmicks because let's be honest, this Griffey thing is a gimmick, why not address the things that your "real" fan base is asking for. Franchise mode improvements, player models, commentary etc. Gimmicks might bring in a few casual fans but you'll end up losing your hardcore fan base if you keep neglecting them.

How much later? This is from his last season.

I know I am just an old guy who loves watching baseball and playing the show, but to draw so many opinions on a one minute trailer on something that is basically still four months from release..............

I will just sit back and see what the SDS boys serve up in four months before I draw my judgement.

The day before they announced this cover for the 2017 I guaranteed myself they will finally put retro teams in the next game after releasing a cover with Ken Griffey Jr on it I'm sure retro teams will be on the way. Plus adding Old Yankee stadium, alot of classic Yankee teams played there. It's pretty obvious to me why Griffey is on the cover, They just haven't announced it..

It's a good addition, I always like using individual players on this game so controlling players from history like Pete Rose, Craig Biggio, Pedro Martinez again would be a useful addition even more than classic NBA and NFL teams.

.
I am like you. I want to believe your right. But with each passing day, and actual announcements of 'Throw Back Pause Menu's', i lose hope we will get anything of substance. In terms of actual game content, I believe that is all we get. In terms of micro transaction stuff, we might get some more retro players, like there were last year. But nothing shock and awe that will make us retro fans sit up and take notice and demand our money. In the week since that last announcement and trailer reveal, its like a balloon deflated a lot of fan interest and optimism in this years game that some had after the Griffey cover. At the end of the day, a cover athlete is just a cover athlete.

Franchise players aren't any more "real" than online players.

Again, Griffey was the most requested DD player by far. Hardly a gimmick.

This is why you will never see full classic teams in the game anymore. You are not going to see the game released with, let's say, the 1961 Yankees, 1967 Red Sox, 1975 Reds, etc. They can't because they players are no longer part of the MLBPA and would have to be negotiated 1 on 1 for all players that were on those teams.

So you will see additional oldtime players added as Legends...but for full teams from the past we will still have to rely on the dedicated and talented roster makers here.

C
Yeah there isn't any way they can afford to add historic teams. Well not enough teams to interest players.

I defintiely agree with your list and would love to see all that implemented as well.
The one minute trailer confirms the engine and player models are the same. The known additions are NB cleats, jersey wrinkles, R.B.I. Baseball mode and Ken Griffey Jr. Not exactly the same reaction as when I watched the Cubs win the World Series. I realize that Griffey and the DD mode brings in additional revenue, fine. If franchise mode isn't their focus and a revamped commentary is not implemented this year, It's not for me. I can't even listen to Matt Vasgersian when he's on the MLB Network anymore. If sales start to dip however, I stated my peace on why I am no longer a customer. If there isn't any competition, wouldn't it make sense to show something interesting so that people would actually want to preorder it? Just a rhetorical question. I'm not going to check back on this thread any longer. It's unfortunate that many of you are content with the status quo.

Hmm, I think the real problem then lies with the non-OS crowd. They just have to be more like us.

Definitely disagree with you. Franchise modes have been around for two decades and most of us who have been around for long enough remember that mode as the bread and butter of sports gaming. Online gaming is a recent phenomenon. Although "real" is probably not a good term for me to use, "original" would probably be more accurate.

At the end of the day what I'm seeing is that they are neglecting the needs of a very large group in favor of another. If you keep catering to the DD players you will eventually lose your franchise guys because you've done nothing to keep them. I'm sorry but Griffey being in the game is stupid to me.

I love this game, its the only automatic video game purchase for me and im excited for '17... but i understand why people are frustrated. They over promised and under delivered on the ps4.

I remember the devs saying that so many things that people wanted would be done when the ps4 came out. Extra uniform slots, uniform templates, player models, roster slots. I could go on and on. All of these things were impossible due to the limited capacity of the ps3 and would be possible on the ps4.

Now 3 years into the ps4 and many of those things havent been addressed. I get it and im frustrated too.

If you can play Griff in RTTS or some sort of custom career mode, then I'm definitely interested. But otherwise, I've never played DD. I guess maybe it's time I finally try it.
