MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

What you saw was likely a diamond dynasty team. I still think that if they could translate that feature to a create-a-team or franchise expansion mode that would be great. However, I'd still wait on SCEA for info.

Also reeaaalllly hoping hair and hair textures are fixed in this game. Last year was really bad and wade mileys hair in the beginning of the trailer looks like more of the same.

I don't usually play DD because I suck and when I play online I get smoked. I play RTTS alot of some franchise. I'll try DD a bit this year but RTTS is my go to. I have started a braves franchise to Polish up my skills. It seems lik all the online games, people find a cheese and then if you don't use that cheese, you lose.

I'm very much hoping for this. After using NBA 2k's rebranding, uniform editor and sharing tools - I can't tell you how much I want these in MLB.

NBA 2K's creation suite is definitely top-tier (maybe a little too top-tier if you ask the NCAA). Madden's is also pretty decent, and even NHL is catching up these days. This would be a great year for The Show to introduce a creation suite and expand on it for years to come.

My biggest "want". I considered holding my breath, but...

How bout editable coaches with more than just + - on a couple of attributes. How bout mid season contract extensions, expansion teams, player awards tracked in player card, team records, more immersed draft, better hall of fame inductions, etc. Dont insult me with a couple of tiny additions when for the most part the franchise mode has been untouched in 3 years
The coaching ratings are one of the biggest jokes in franchise. Not only do the certain attributes not even make sense, but they consistently give the best coaches in baseball low ratings. They should really address that.

All they can do is add more Classic players a few each year

because they have to negotiate 1 on 1 with the player or their estate to get permission (and pay them) to put their name and likeness in the game.

This is why you will never see full classic teams in the game anymore You are not going to see the game released with, let's say, the 1961 Yankees, 1967 Red Sox, 1975 Reds, etc. They can't because they players are no longer part of the MLBPA and would have to be negotiated 1 on 1 for all players that were on those teams.

We do not NEED full classic teams. You don't have to license every player to ever play the game of baseball. We NEVER had full classic teams. When past games had classic teams, they didn't feature licensed players. Heres what they DID feature. Accurate uniforms, logos, jerseys, stadiums, and ratings. We ALWAYS had to create the players ourselves. At the time, we had better TOOLS. Heck, give us a Creation Suite like other next gen sports titles have, and I'm guessing the community will do the job themselves.

Again, Retro Mode does not need classic teams with licensed 40 man rosters to be a success.

Instead: Give us all the retro stuff we COULD have. That games did for over a decade. It was at one time a standard: Retro Jerseys, Stadiums, Presentation. All Star Baseball, MVP Baseball, MLB 2K. All games featured these things. Give us league customization. That won't cost a dime. We can purchase the retro DLC players available, and create the ones remaining that we need. Give the retro content a context that its worth playing in. Give us the tools ,and we will pay you back tenfold.

So kind of like what EA used to do with NCAA football?

I'm not sure what you mean bud, yes, but lets not forget NCAA Football was hardly the first or only game to include Creation Suites. MVP Baseball, Madden, NBA 2K, WWE 2K, all games included customization options not found in MLB The Show

I believe, and hope, the attitude by The Show team in the past has been, there are obstacles in the way of implementing retro content---so we just aren't going to go there AT ALL. I hope NOW, there is an attitude change of---lets include everything we CAN.

Or what 2K currently does with the NBA series. In 2K17 I was able to retool their Season Mode into highly accurate current NCAA and throwback ABA seasons, complete with players, courts and jerseys. It's about as immersive as it gets without actually owning the license(s). Whether or not this crosses a line somewhere down the road remains to be seen, although I'm pretty sure the NCAA isn't exactly thrilled with some of the spot-on college team recreations currently residing on 2K's servers.

The point is that if the devs provide you with a robust set of creation tools, it only needs a vibrant community to take advantage of them and make something special, which NBA 2K (and I assume The Show) definitely have.

No prob man. I can't link to everything as it would blow up the board, but here are the images I built for my throwback ABA franchise:

Spoiler

FWIW, I'm a graphic designer so I'm super-critical about the details. Some of these logos only existed as low-res on the web so I rebuilt them as vectors, which if you know anything about design can take ages. Some didn't exist at all so I had to build them from scratch. It took me weeks to fully build my ABA franchise but it looks killer and I'm super-happy with it.

Until we can finally get past the limited uniform slots, we will never be able to have all the tools necessary to do this sadly. I'm very shocked that this deep into the new gen systems we are still dealing with this.

That is also money out the door. How many people buy the game for these additions? Not enough to recoup the investment I would bet. I could be wrong.
But SDS did add classic stadiums on PS4, even after they initially said there wasn't enough interest. Granted those stadiums already existed on PS3, but they were old builds that had to be rebuilt from the ground up. Quite a bit of work for something that doesn't offer a high ROI.

I guess what I'm saying is that SDS is capable of surprising us with any from here 'til March. Instead of focusing on what may not be included, it's more productive (and more fun!) to speculate what may be included. Personally, I'm hoping for a great creation suite until it's confirmed or de-confirmed.

Bottom line, if they don't finally upgrade the player models and improve player graphics I am ready to stop playing this game. I'm just about ready to boycott this game like I did with madden back in 2014. We've had the same 3 player body types since the PS3...that's pathetic. The small changes will no longer justify a $60 purchase. If you can't make significant changes than don't release the game every year. I'm sure I'm in the minority here but I'm ok boycotting this game alone. They'll have to earn my money. I'm sorry for going off but I sense that the lack of competition is hurting this franchise.

This is just something I personally don't understand. I am not attacking your decision to stop buying/boycotting this game, its your choice. What I don't understand how player models mean that much that you would stop playing what I consider to be one of the better Baseball games ever made. Now we all know I am a Show "fanboy" and I defend them a bit more than I probably should. But I just don't see the player models being that big of a detriment to the game as whole. Obviously you feel this way and you have every right to your feelings and opinion, I just don't get it.

I really hope online play is smooth and as lag free as possible this year. This is something I've always disliked about the game. I still have 14 and it was basically unplayable online so I gave up after a few games and just played offline, which was a drag. Was 16 better in this regard?
