MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

We have a robust roster making community who provides amazing classic rosters for our enjoyment every iteration.

The other things you speak of.....they have already said doubtful for most of those for years now.

Get over it.
Just to add onto your point about classic rosters. I honestly don't think SDS could make better historic rosters than the ones we already have. I've always been blown away by the detail and quality of the Caps. Especially the faces, it takes me an hour to make a rtts guy look like me. Yet these guys make photo realistic faces for tons of players.

I don't disagree about be able to customize "season" mode. I think that can be accomplished.

I was talking more about create a stadium and expansion mode which they have really talked about as something that has always been not a focus nor probably will be implemented.

But again I, like you would love the ability to realign the divisions and remove teams to create old school "season" mode baseball with classic rosters.

I know they have heard and seen that request for years and maybe they can get that in for us eventually.

Theres plenty of music on youtube of the soundtrack to choose from. I need to do that as well.

They all likely have sound effects in the way (balls being hit, strikes and outs being called, etc).

EDIT: Nevermind, you're right. I found some direct rip types.

^ Um...what's up with Griffey's lips? I think he needed an antihistamine.

That game was so dope. I can still remember if you struck out, the batter would turn around and sometimes say, "AH come on." Always made me laugh.

I don't know if this has been said yet or not, and probably gets filed under "player models", but I truly hope the follow through of each throw is corrected a bit. I hate seeing the pitcher/thrower's hand open up like he's about to give a high five as soon as the ball is released.

I member all this except the gameplay with no depth. The depth was as deep as my imagination allowed.
But I think we lose that ability with age (which is why we demand so much from games as adults now,
and most of us are never quite satisfied, myself included)

The trailer looked the same as 16. Where are the pro enhancements?

maybe its just me, but what enhancements can there be? outside of 4k up scaling and HDR (which even the regular ps4 has now) I'm thinking that the PRO isn't going to bring games to new heights and make them look radically different to their non pro counter parts. (its not like the pro will have 1000 different fan models, while the regular ps4 only has 500) In my opinion the PRO is only good for is slight (barely noticeable) visual resolution, bigger stock hard drive, with slightly better load times.

I'm sure we will see/hear about the "enhancements", if available, the Pro will provide to The Show '17 in due time.

We still have over 3 months til release.

One thing that I personally love better about the Pro then the standard is noise levels. My PS4 standard version sounded like a jet engine at times when playing MLB The Show. There is no noise at all as far as I can tell when playing MLB The Show on the PS4 Pro even after several hours of playing . I literally need to put my ears right next to the PS4 Pro to hear any fan noise at all. That alone was worth the upgrade for me.

Plus very noticeable boot times and even game loading times seem a little faster The PS4 Pro just looks like it's made with higher quality parts.

As far as MLB The Show 17 I have a very good feeling that when you look at the game side by side on the standard and pro you will easily see the difference. Maybe not a night and day kind of difference but I am sure the Pro version will look much sharper with better color and the like more photo realistic.

I don't know, but who needs a retro arcade mode in The Show 17 ? They work on a pretty close deadline and it seems to me like a waste of time to invest resources in something like this. It's like they're worried about the boringness of baseball. But baseball is baseball. Just have faith in your loyal customers, give us quality and authenticity: you will be rewarded

Just a guess but I don't think it took to much development time away from other things when creating retro mode. I am very happy to see retro mode as I think it will be a nice alternative way to play MLB The Show.

The RBI guys have to be concerned about this. I've never played any of the modern RBI Baseball games but I loved the NES classics and Retro Mode should scratch that itch. I wonder if they'll shift their focus to mobile.
