MLB 14 The Show News Post

After releasing a mini-fact sheet last week, we now have the official MLB 14 The Show fact sheet, thanks to Russell over at The Show Nation.

Read them over and let us know what you think. The PlayStation Vita and PS3 version arrive on April 1st, while the PS4 version will ship sometime in May. When we get an official PS4 release date, we'll be sure to update everyone.

KEY FEATURES
  • Next Generation Baseball Has Arrived - MLB 14 The Show makes its next-gen debut on the PS4 system, utilizing the system’s vast resources to deliver exceptionally detailed and fluid gameplay. With improvements to presentation, a wealth of added animations, and a dramatic increase in environment and player detail, we are setting out to create the best-looking and best-playing baseball sim ever created.

  • The Evolution of Road to The Show continues (All platforms) - First among the major improvements is a completely revamped advancement system, complete with improved logic and the removal of advancement goals. Also being introduced is a new beginning to a player’s RTTS career with the Topps Amateur Showcase, a series of games against other draft prospects. Additionally, the training system, logic, screens and modes have all been revamped to provide users with a more engaging experience.

    - Other changes include a new player-creation process, the reintroduction of the “broadcast” presentation perspective as an option, and a re-envisioned Catcher Mode, to name a few (PS3 & PS4 Only).

  • Year-to-Year Saves (All platforms) - For the first time in franchise history, saves can be carried over from MLB 14 to future releases of The Show, meaning that gamers won't have to worry about starting their Franchise or Road to the Show seasons over in years to come.

  • Player Lock (All platforms) - The new Player Lock feature (a.k.a RTTS anywhere) gives users the ability to lock-on to any single player and enter games using the Road to the Show gameplay mechanic, allowing for faster games and more focused on-field action.

  • Quick Counts (All platforms) - Users will now be able to play a full nine-inning game in less than 30 minutes, half the time it takes in previous iterations of The Show. Despite the shortened game durations, realistic stats will not be compromised.

  • Community Challenges (PS3 & PS4) - Players will be able to freely toy and tinker with game situations and scenarios on the fly, whether that’s the inning, score, who’s on base, or where the ball is hit. These custom situations can be bundled with a creative set of goals and put forth as a challenge to the community, whether it’s to relive the past, change history, or dream of new possibilities.

  • Universal Profile (PS3 & PS4) - A new tendency-tracking system monitors and records gamers’ unique playing styles. Those patterns are stored in the Universal Profile, which can be viewed by anyone looking to get a quick scouting report on the player. The Universal Profile can also be subbed in in place of a CPU opponent in Diamond Dynasty and Online Franchise, making for more realistic head-to-head matchups when schedules prevent synchronous play.

  • Online Franchise (PS3 & PS4) - Finally, Franchise mode can be shared with friends online, with most of the features from the offline version making the transition, including Scouting, the Amateur Draft, Free Agency and CPU Trades. The mode will remain highly customizable as scheduling, divisions, postseason spots and more are all commissioner options.

  • Stubs (All platforms) - Playing games in MLB 14 The Show rewards players with Stubs. Stubs can be used to purchase additional in-game content – like Road to the Show training points – or used in our new mode, Community Challenges. Stubs can be earned in any mode, and they are not required to progress through a mode. You can still purchase additional in-game content through the PlayStation Store.

  • Diamond Dynasty Extra Innings (PS3 & PS4) - In this mode, a player’s team is always looking for opportunities to challenge other users in an offline setting, which allows the user to earn bonus rewards the next time they log in. When online, the player has the opportunity to challenge other user-created teams in an offline game where the CPU controls their team. Players can only benefit positively in this mode even if their team does not perform up to their normal standards.

  • Dynamic Difficulty (All platforms) - Baseball is a sport the dedicated love to master, but also one that can intimidate newcomers. In this year’s version of The Show, players who don’t feel like veterans yet can opt to start on a lower difficulty level and jump right in. An advanced logic system will then grade the user’s skill and adjust the challenge level up or down based on their overall performance. Batting and pitching are evaluated separately, so it’s possible for one to increase in difficulty while the other doesn’t, or even reduces. On-screen notifications will advise when the difficulty setting has been adjusted.

  • Franchise Improvements (PS3 & PS4 Only) - Efforts continue to improve the accessibility of Franchise mode. A new notification system, which keeps the user more connected to their organization and the league, serves as an “Assistant GM” and will make sure critical information is more immediately provided and more readily accessible. Also refined is the logic that helps the multi-season cycle of Franchise mode and all of the stats and developments therein resemble real life as closely as possible. Other additions include a player search and the ability to hire and fire coaches during the regular season.

  • True Broadcast Presentations (PS3 & PS4 Only) - The Show’s presentation crew has taken on a tall task for MLB 14: streamlining the game while enhancing the reality and increasing the variety of the experience. Pace of play is a focal point for the team as we strive to immerse the user in an even more engaging simulation. Heavy emphasis has also been placed on the stadium environment to feature the upgraded crowd actors, jumbotrons, LED boards, dugouts, specific stadium audio and a more engaged, responsive and unique crowd.

-On the commentary side, the three-man booth of Matt Vasgersian, Eric Karros and Steve Lyons return for their second season together. This year's title will emphasize the three announcers in a more interactive, conversational style, yet will also continue to mine the world of baseball to find intelligent, timely and compelling commentary concerning today's teams and players. The overall goal is for the game to get deeper, and for the announcers to better adapt to changing game conditions -- including rising the enthusiasm level when the situation dictates.

Either I haven't read everything right, or I'm just not seeing it. Will they have more commentary in RTTS this year? Kinda killed it for me in last year's game. That's usually the mode I play the most, but it became pretty boring without some banter.

Yes broadcast mode has been added back to RTTS

I think this is likely for stats ....as storing on the4(saved data) or online servers is a big difference.

These ones seem like they would be part of any franchise mode as they are just behind the scenes logic improvements and maybe just a mistake that the (Online Franchise) was added. I just can't see them only implementing these improvements into the online franchise.

- Refined player generation, with more position-specific attribute ranges (Online Franchise)
- New contract decision logic, which factors in contract renewable and arbitration status more heavily (Online Franchise)
- New lineup logic that takes into account secondary positions (Online Franchise)
- Refined trade logic (Online Franchise)

These are obviously only for online franchise.

-New user management functionality at TheShowNation.com (Online Franchise)
-Make, accept, and vote on trades through TheShowNation.com (Online Franchise)
-Resolve and simulate games on TheShowNation.com (Online Franchise)
-League members can now manage games on TheShowNation.com (Online Franchise)

But these two.

- Retired players stored for every season (Online Franchise)
- More player stats stored for every season (Online Franchise)

They seem like they could be an online only feature if the data is store online and only accessible through the online franchise menus. I hope not, but they could have gone this route technically.

I wonder what they mean by "Online Franchise"...

I've never played anything online. Just never appealed to me.

I wonder if one can play franchise games (a lot of simming) and then save online?

I've never done RTTS, does that take a lot longer to sim games? (maybe you play all of them)

Also, do you think this stats storing feature (if online) would probably be something we have to pay extra for?

What would be wonderful, if indeed, we have to do all the saves online and such - to be able to save them down to a USB drive and maybe something to load them to a PC for saving/analyzing.

The Show is a great game in many regards, but the stats interface (find players to awards to yearly stats to retired players stats) has been very lacking. Honestly, the only area that has probably been 'weak'..if you can say that about a sports game.

They wouldn't charge for stat storing, it would go against everything they've been saying about the universal currency.

From what I understand the online franchise is more of an extension to the online leagues already in the game. Its just that its more robust and offers what franchise mode offers, just with other people.

Maybe Knight knows more about how the online franchise functions and if its viable to play it alone (with simming, etc). But even then it still does nothing for those who play offline.

I'm sure they will flesh it out in a dev blog....but it's basically the offline franchise.....but you set it up and play it online(the servers).
You can play as just one team and set the others to CPU....or you can choose however many teams you like.

I'm not sure if this question has been asked, but is there going to be a more immersive Franchise mode (as far as MLB records and milestones are concerned)?

I don't think I've ever played a franchise mode that was as accurate as MLB The Show is as far as the rules of being the GM - arbitration, player drafts, renewing contracts, etc are all very accurate - but the way that you can only see the last two seasons on a player card, and the stats that you see are only BA, hits, HR, RBI and other generic stats like that is really disappointing. You should be able to see every season that a player played in, there should be a Top 10 (or AT LEAST a Top 5) of career stats such as Hits, HR, Stolen Bases, etc... Just so you can feel as though all the games you play are leading to something.

Another thing that I'll never understand --- If they have the Hall of Fame, and they have retired jersey numbers, then why the hell can't you retire a player's jersey number? Everyone in the world knows Jeter will get his number retired this year or next, so why wouldn't it retire in the game? NBA Live had this feature back in the day on the old XBOX where after somebody retired, whether it was Shaq or Jason Collins, you could retire his jersey. I always thought this was a really cool idea and I'm surprised it never manifested itself in any other games.

Well it looks like somebody else a couple posts above me had a similar gripe about stats not being very immersive.. Cool

Is anything missing from what you can tell, like 30 team control, editing players, etc.

# 409 HarlemYankee @ 02/27/14 12:13 AM
Another problem I always had with this game is that the All-Star Game jerseys were just their warm-ups instead of everybody's team. Would love to get that aspect of the game finally ironed out, along with being able to move your franchise and edit your team name/colors, etc.

One last problem/idea that I'd love to get solved is player progression and regression along with incoming prospects. God the prospects. SPORTS GAMES WILL NEVER GET THIS RIGHT!!!! The problem with the draft is that things like speed, arm power & accuracy, etc.. weigh too heavily on a player's overall rating. For example... How many times have you seen somebody who is a five tool player in your drafts in Franchise mode? Never. Even with the first pick in the draft, you'll get someone who is really good at hitting for power or average and that's just about it. The thing about baseball is that things like plate discipline and awareness factor into your "overall rating" way more than things like speed do. It's the reason why players like Dee Gordon are always overrated in the game. Somebody can be the fastest and strongest person in the world, but if they swing at everything, they will be a horrible baseball player. And the fact that speed is an attribute that can be developed is ridiculous. People don't get THAT much faster over time. People are either fast or they aren't.

Couldnt agree more with that paragraph about prospects and that. And theres that old adage that you cant teach speed for a reason haha.

# 411 MrOldboy @ 02/27/14 12:31 AM
The issues with prospects and regression/progression has been discussed a ton on here and the devs are surely aware of it.

Its been suggested that when scouting prospects you should see tools and not raw attributes, and have a cap on those tools. So if you scout a prospect and his run tool is a 70, then he is a 70 and can't get much faster than that.

But I think the one thing most people have agreed on regarding prospects, regression, progression is more randomness and variety in the system. A prospect should bust once in a while and sometimes a low level prospect should surprise you.

# 412 HarlemYankee @ 02/27/14 01:32 AM
100% there needs to be a randomness factor for prospects, but that is something that I think should have more to do with plate discipline and awareness and whatnot... Maybe a thought would be that prospects could be ranked on tools instead of conventional attributes that established players have. Someone can have a great "raw power" rating and then once he has been in your farm system he can either develop the plate discipline and eye to utilize it or he doesn't. So many phenomenal athletes never have the intangibles necessary to put it all together, but those are normally the guys who are drafted in the first round. The great athletes with the plus arm or the starters who throw 97 mph and everything like that.

Has anyone heard if advanced single-A will be playable in this year's game for either platform? I haven't seen or heard anything about it.

What are the odds single-A becomes playable?

I feel like that would have been a big thing on the fact sheet. Still possible, but doesn't look that way.

So instead of Class A, The Show will have Class Zero? As long as the level is actually there, people should feel fine I think.

Someday, people will actually use the search feature.

A6M fighter - nicknamed zero

I knew a guy named Tommy Flynn who was a member of my VFW post in St Louis. He was on the USS Allen at Pearl Harbor which was credited with shooting down three Japanese planes during the attack.

I always sim my minor league games but I'm not surprised somebody plays them.

I wonder if they found a way for managers and coaches jersey #s to correspond with the rest of the team. Kind of gets annoying seeing a manager/coach wearing the same # as a player.

Example: In my MLB 13 Mariners Franchise. Robinson Cano and Eric Wedge bother wore #22
