Is it just me or does it look like that handchecking is a lot more rampant than in normal NBA?

Especially during the contact animation. The only way you can divert a ball handler off path when they are faced up is to body them up with your chest, you can't put your hands on them in a manner that prevents them from moving or diverts them off course. I realize it doesn't always get called but guys in the real NBA are a lot more cautious where they put their hands as well (usually they have them out to the sides when they are "riding" the ball handler). This is probably a side effect of removing the 2 player animations.

Here's a few spots I noticed...

0:59 Battier Hand Checks Gasol
3:55 Gasol Hand Checks Lebron
4:17 Chalmders Hand Checks Nash
5:35 Lebron Hand Checks MWP
6:07 MWP hand Checks Lebron
7:59 MWP hand Checks Lebron

Ultimately it's just a cosmetic problem, as long as the game still feels balanced, it's not an issue. It's just something I noticed....

Oh, I misunderstood your post and thought you meant Kobe handling the ball while Nash & Howard weren't getting enough touches. My apologizes because that issue with bigmen playing on the perimeter, who aren't "stretch" 4's like Barginani, Dirk & Jamison, is a legacy problem (coding, I believe). We'll see if the demo and final build have the same problem.

I like the gameplay and can see the improvements. This is the definitely the best basketball game released. The CPU was double teaming in a first quarter off pick and rolls and when LeBron had the ball. The difficulty looks like Pro and the setting reminds me of default but can't tell for sure. There were a lot of shots made could just be random though. They really nailed Kobe's jumper down this year. The bring the ball up tendency needs to be adjusted for the Lakers. Kobe was bringing up the ball too much and they were running the ball a little too much through him. I am not sure the bring the ball up tendency can be edited by us but that needs to be.

It looks like heavy iso-motion and iso offense may not be the best strategy but the Heat user clearly had auto plays on and wasn't going by them for the most part.

hopefully this was on rookie.
I don't get it. Why is that acceptable in real life but not the video game that is trying to replicate the real life sport?

Ok so far my breakdown (based on the fact that this is not the ratail version, difficulty level seems to be Rookie, and Game Style seems like default not simulation)

PROS
  • CPU Double Teams are back!
  • Spacing seems improved
  • Passing seems a lot better than 2k12
  • Jump Shoot animations looks even better than 2k12
  • Nice contacts on the perimeter and on some drives
  • Dunks looks great not more floaty dunks
  • Seems like a blend between 2k7 and 2k11 which is great for me ^__^

CONS
  • I'm not seeing enought contact in the paint but that maybe related to game style settings
  • Rebounding :-(
  • Graphics Engine is outdated....but I guess we need to wait till next gen consoles for this

Help Defense, and Protecting the rim are the keys to NBA defense. This whole one-on-one on ball lock down defense craze that people on this site have is not real life nor is it realistic NBA basketball. The Heat have shooters all over the floor so you either live with bron and wade driving or you give up open jumpers.
Which would kind of bum me out if I knew it's one of the few things keeping this year's Lakers squad from being practically invincible. On 2K8 my main online teams were actually the Kings and Hornets. The Kings were one of the longest teams in the game and Artest was practically an automatic no score for whoever he was guarding. And with the Hornets, for whatever reason Julian Wright was just a monster defender and a pretty nice dribble drive offensive player.

Honestly, I haven't seen defenders as capable as those two since 2K8, defense has taken little tiny back steps every year. It's to the point where when I use the Knicks online I often bench Chandler in favor of putting Melo at the 4 and Amare at the 5, because Chandler's best qualities are practically useless in the game.

With signature skills hopefully you'll want to keep him on the floor.

This year's Little Things Thread will blow up hard.

The more that I look at it, the more I'm convinced that this will be the year for me. I wasn't excited for the game last year, as the videos looked like more of the same. The 2k series has continually improved on their title, year in and year out. They have been subtle changes, and nothing really revolutionary. I know that is a word that I shouldn't use, as this control scheme has been done by a competitor before, but it's new to 2k, and I think it's just what the series needed. I can handle the "sliding" appearance. Especially considering this is their first year with the new control scheme.

The animations seem to have improved 10 fold. The avoidance of contact animations are very nice. The explosive dribble moves, I don't even have a problem with the contact animations. In the end, with a little tweaking, I think this will be the first year that I will not be putting the game down within the first 2-3 months.

Last year, I didn't play 2 months, hardly a month even. Granted, with 2 kids under 2 years old, my time was limited period. But this year, I'll make the time.

After watching this video I am blown away with what I am seeing!!! I love the contextual animations for on ball defense as I saw Chalmers and Wade clapping their hands as in getting into a defensive stance. I love how Battier was damn near crying to get the ball in his beloved corner hot spot. That Nash bounce pass in transition to Kobe was beautiful!!!! I love how MWP crowded James in the corner before he blew by him with that awesome spin move. If you guys look closely, Metta crowded James so much he could barely get his pivot foot down. I love how Bryant missed that dunk of the steal. If you see where he took off from to try to dunk it there is no reason he should of been able to connect that. Maybe 5 years ago but not today. I LOVE how MWP guessed the wrong side of where James was going on the spinoff to the rim and James saw Kobe and adjusted his shot to a double pump type lay up! Triple threat moves matter this year guys. I have seen many times explosive players such as Wade and James able to create space just from the triple threat!! Before I had to rely on the pump fake to get my defender in the air then blow by him. It looks like I can also rely on triple threat moves as well. This opens up a totally new dynamic to matchups and how to approach the game. Cant wait for the Oct. 2nd to get here!!!!!

I am going to make a prediction that the little things thread and the Highlight Reel thread will be the biggest it has ever been. 2k11 nostalga all over again

Yeah hopefully a dominant inside presences are well represented this year...like the other poster said, I think sig styles will play a big role in that.

I don't totally agree with regression though....while 2k9 was very bad and 2k10 was slightly better....2k11 was a great year for defense. I was shutting down Heat/Lakers spammers left and right....

# 275 Guard-ian @ 09/08/12 11:51 AM
2k11 was a great game to shut down cheesers, but the game was too offensive oriented and you could not counter good offensive teams with good defensive teams. 2k will be actually balanced when the "offense win games but defense win championships" is also true in the game, so far good offense has been much more dominant than good defense in my view.

I am waiting a game where players like Tony Allen are as useful as they are in real life, if 2k13 gets this, then the sky is the limit... I am not saying that players like Allen are going to make you a contender, I mean that those kind of players can be starters with an important role in any team with aspirations.

Cheers! ;-)

things that i liked
  • defensive bumping on the perimeter
  • foot planting even more so impressed by the foot planting on defense
  • speed...so great to see steve nash catching up to slower defenders and passing em up on a break
  • screens look more dynamic and effective
  • contact finishes in the paint are beautiful
  • layups/dunk animations looks beautiful, even more so with the animations that follows that makes the gather, finish and getting back on defense look so realistic and smooth
  • animation that lebron did to point out to the ref that he thought their was enough contact to be rewarded and and one situation
  • the little animations like kobe readjusting his arm sleeve
  • ambiance of the crowd
  • 3 team announcers seems dynamic as if though they all recorded in the same room at the same time
  • stats overlay is awesome
thing i didnt like
  • net animations were lame when the ball squishes (am sure this wont make it into the final build)

# 277 johnnyg713 @ 09/08/12 12:10 PM
is it me or do the animations play out a little too fast? It almost seems like they could slow it down just a little bit.

I just have to disagree man!

Besides 2k8, 2k11 is my favorite 2k to play online because you were rewarded for positioning on defense...and though there were some funky animations, it served its purpose...

More than a few members have mentioned they had a lot of success with teams like the Bucks and other defensive teams...

I feel you on individual players like T Allen though, once again, I'm hoping sig skills helps with this

-Defensive contact looks nice and it actually looks fun to play D.
-Looks fun to drive, too.
-Blown dunks.
-CPU didn't try a lot of up-and-unders, but this might be on pro.
-CPU also shot earlier in the shot clock than in 2k12, especially when they were open from mid range.
-No dribbling off of people's feet! Thank you.
-Spacing: Heat players are not getting in front of Wade and Lebron when they go iso. They are at the 3 spreading the defense, but the D is still looking to crowd Wade and Lebron on drives when appropriate. Even at 6:13 Wade was in the post, but then got out of the way when Lebron drove.

Stuff I didn't like:
-Gasol got an offensive board at 4:20 over a boxing out Battier. Then again, Gasol would probably get it in real life.
-Nash shot clock cheese? C'mon son.
-Lebron and Wade seem overpowered driving to the rim, but this is probably pro, and, well, they are Lebron and Wade.
So basically you disliked the realism? Cause thats what wade and bron do nash is more than capable of hitting a 3 at the end of the shotclock and gasol has a superior advantage over battier regarding size. In other words you have no dislikes
