Eh, I was definitely expecting something gameplay related, although I did secretly wish the announcement would be that CHoops was coming back with deep MP integration. Ah well.

Soundtrack has some nice tracks, but some of these songs are going to sound horrible edited. "Mercy" is going to be BUTCHERED, mark my words.

If they had announced Barkley/Reggie Miller/Iverson would be returning to the game that would've been a disappointment. If they announced the return of College Hoops fully integrated into NBA2K that really isn't what many would say is the biggest announcement ever in 2K history. If they announced the Dream Team it would've been a disappointment.

The minute people tried to tie that comment to the announcement it was doomed from the start to disappoint. I really can't think of anything that's bigger than getting Michael Jordan. So people flipping out because they hyped themselves up/wanted to relive their childhood Christmas morning feelings of titillation can blame themselves. Getting Jay-Z is a big announcement. Biggest in 2K history? Of course not but chances were extremely slim that the announcement would ever be that to begin with.
U dont read Ronnies tweets do u? (Think u are better off that way) He was hyping it out of propotion as well, as always. But as said before anyone knowing the 2k hypte machine knew this was gonna be some bull.

Are you ****ing kidding me?! This is the most stupidest announcement ever...Gay Z and sports gaming don't go together

This is a great soundtrack. Can't be disappointed in that. I was not expecting a ground breaking announcement regarding gameplay anyways.

meh. like somebody else said: this is a basketball game, not a music album. the music is probably last on the list of importance when it comes to a basketball game. moving on.

This is Jay-Z a fan and owner of a Basketball team, I hope he help with presentation since I think that will be a thing he can help with a lot, and the scoreboard in that video from E3 looks like crap, so I hope Jay-Z can touch it up. People hyped this one up and are bringing down before realizing, "Jay-Z, a fan of basketball, is the executive producer of THE ENTIRE NBA 2K13 game, not just music, not just the Brooklyn Nets design, THE ENTIRE GAME". I also hope Jay-Z can help with gameplay since he's a fan and he watches basketball, and with Chris Smoove getting to see and voice opinion on 2K13, I think this will be good. This is 2K13 being built by the biggest fans 2K could find and if Shady had the chance to go, this game would be great to 2K11 standard.

Note for future announcements: when an EXECUTIVE of a company says the biggest announcement of their company is gonna happen rather than a fan, don't believe that it's gonna be big.
Somehow, I'm kind of doubting Jay-Z touched up the scoreboard. Further, what would be so magical about Jay-Z's appearance that'd allow him to provide golden nuggets of information on gameplay improvements that no other 2K employee or outside hardcore source (ex: MJ, Czar) could think of prior?

From my understanding, Jay-Z likes basketball but he hasn't necessarily been a hardcore hooper for the duration of his life. And no, making millions of dollars in the entertainment business then buying an NBA franchise does not automatically qualify someone as knowing everything about the game. With that said, I'm not saying he's clueless just, to imagine him attempting to leave an imprint on 2K beyond a flashy intro video or in-game scoreboard graphic sort of makes me cringe. I'd be left wondering whether the changes would truly be positive basketball moves, or just Jay-Z's interpretation of what would be positive basketball moves.

They should really release two versions of the game; one rated M with unedited and swears and stuff and then one rated E with all the songs edited and kid-friendly

I don't know why the backlash about this, when you step back and look at the big picture. This is a huge announcement for 2k, Jay-Z, IS one of the biggest names in the US, yet the World.

Here are some quotes from the ESPN article.

Quote:
Carter has not only personally selected the game’s 24-song soundtrack, but he’s also been working with 2K designers on the overall look and feel of the game’s presentation.
Jay-Z selected the songs, not 2k. I personally think the list looks dope, not too happy that Amazing made it back in, but it was Jay's call and he has some reason for putting it in. And hopefully its not pure "advertisement" for himself/Kanye.

Quote:
We wanted to talk to people who were authentic to the sport of basketball, but also authentic to the world of entertainment and music and culture. Every time we sat down to make our lists, one guy kept rising to the top, and that’s Jay-Z.
Interested in seeing what Jay has brought to the table.

Quote:
When the development team behind “NBA 2K13” approached Carter about possibly working on the game, he told them that he wanted the collaboration to be more than simply slapping his name on the front of the box.

We actually got more collaborative involvement than I ever could’ve imagined,” said Argent as he broke down hour-long sessions with the development team sitting down with Jay-Z inside his New York office. “Jay has called at eight o’clock at night asking questions and telling us about some of his ideas that he wanted to put in the game.

He’s very engaged with this, from the look to the feel to the flow to the creative presentation of the game. Jay wanted the experience from as soon as you load the game to feel like something he did and was something he was involved with.
This sounds promising, but its a wait and see thing. It could just be PR hobnoggin, but I will wait and see how the presentation turns out. Hopefully Jay brought in some good HipHop Rap ideas to the table and 2k was able to successfully implement into the menus, presentation.

Quote:
He was focused with everything off the court.” ‘NBA 2K13’ will be the next evolution in sports and basketball culture, and I’m ready to usher in the new era of the franchise.
I really wonder what direction the game took "off the court" with Jay having such a big 'presence'.

Okay, just for clarity before anybody else tries to start running with this line of thought. We're not talking about just a single "MARKETING GUY." This was Jason Argent, the friggin Vice President of Marketing at 2K Sports. Trying to pass him off as just some random PR guy that made an offhand comment doesn't fly. That's as bad as the dudes on here trying to act like Steve is some random *** mod that started a topic. No offense to any mods btw. So yeah, let's just get that outta the way now. Big difference in "a single marketing guy" and the Vice President of Marketing for 2K Sports.

Ali In The Jungle is a nice choice. Love that song and it doesn't really get much recognition.

It is personal advertisement for Jay & Kanye. About 10 tracks from them. I guess they need big names because live is coming out this year.

I HOPE 2K READS THIS STUFF. THOSE CLOWNS OVER THERE MUST THINK THAT THESE KIND OF JOKES ARE FUNNY? WHEN IT COMES TO RAP, I WOULD KNOW THE LYRICS TO ANY DECENT SONG. BUT THIS IS FREAKIN OUTRAGEOUS!!! THE ONLY REASON I WAS GONNA BUY 2K WAS BECAUSE OF MY PLAYER!!!!!!!!!! BUT THEM PLAYING A JOKE LIKE THIS.... I DON'T CARE IF NBA LIVE IS THE WORST GAME EVER MADE, I WOULD STILL BUY IT. I HOPE 2K FOUND THIS FUNNY, BECAUSE THEY WON'T BE LAUGHIN WHEN "THE BIGGEST ANNOUNCEMENT IN 2K HISTORY" ENDS UP KILLING TJERE SALES... BIGGEST ANNOUNCEMENT MY...

The worst part about this announcement has been the abundance of random people who've decided to log in and pollute the boards... smh...

This is comically bad marketing at this point.

1) Hype a huge announcement
2) deliver an shockingly underwhelming announcement
3) Explain that we don't fully understand the announcement yet.
4) Hype the "detailing" of the announcement in the future.

Here is my question, why did 2K not just say nothing? And then yesterday when Jay Z was announced, the reaction would have been something like "WOW! Jay Z!!!! #2K #LIVEISDEAD #HOV"

The idea of hyping a big announcement is so risky because it creates expectations that are almost impossible to me. But see Madden 13.

Yeah.

Trust me, this wont damper their sells. Most of the people who buy/play this game dont go on boards/forums or even heard of the "biggest 2k announcement ever". Most of them wont know who is on the soundtrack before the game comes out unless someone tells them.

This will help them sell to more casual gamers. "Hey look Jay Z is the executive producer of 2k13. I dont know what that means, but It must means something good and a good soundtrack"

You know what they're going to think now? It has KD, Blake Grffin, and Derrick Rose on the cover with Jay-Z personally producing the soundtrack for the game. This is going to hype up the casual fanbase immensely. Especially considering Jordan's contract is up after this year they are going all out with one last hurrah for the "Legends" so to speak.

This is just to tide us over until the dev dairies.
I think that, generally, this is a good point. But in this case, the inclusion of a soundtrack and presentation by Jay Z really won't appeal to the "casual fan."

But this really is a novel approach. I can't think of a game that sold because of a soundtrack. The purpose, I always thought, was to make the experience with the game more enjoyable.
