Off-ball defenders will not be punished. On-ball defenders will be given more leeway since it's more challenging.

Then you dont have anything to worry about. Your cpu defenders will still contest shots for you.
While you're still here, I know it's probably too late for 2k12, but for 2k13 could you think of implementing the option of being able to stop And 1 plays with a close defender?
Say D-Rose drives to the hoop and gets bumped on the way by Rondo. While Rose is adjusting his shot in mid-air (the whistle having already been blown) someone like Garnett for instance would be able to rotate and swat away the ball, thereby negating the chance for an And 1 instead of the animation playing out and everyone is standing still?
Or is this already possible?
DukeC--Check out the KonsoleKingz video and go to about the 1:55 mark. There is a Lebron drive where he draws the foul on Butler(I think that's him)but is swatted by a close by Marion to deny the and 1 opportunity..
I hope playing Zone Defense is much easier than it was in 2K11, especially when playing User vs User because it was just about useless unless you played User vs CPU.
"Now, we give you an added incentive to play the ball on defense. For one, user-controlled defenders will impact the shot percentages more than an AI-controlled one. When you control the defender and perform hands up defense or jump up to contest, your shot release defense will be higher than just leaving it to your AI teammates."
"Further balancing the game, we also ensured that all shots could be countered on the defensive end. As an example, the spin dunk and hop steps from 2K11 was nearly unstoppable once the animation has started. This ended up being a cheeser’s favorite go-to move. To those not familiar with gaming memes, a cheeser is a user who performs the same move over and over because of a game balance issue. In NBA 2K12, we have addressed this by creating vulnerability windows during all shots."
"On the flip side, we also addressed game balance issue. That is, being able to recover too quickly from a block attempt. There’s nothing more frustrating on the offensive side when you get the defender to bite on a pump fake only to see him right in front of you again a split second later. Now, when a defender goes up for an aggressive block, there will be a recovery period where he can’t immediately launch and run to get back. This change really balances out the game now."
BEST NEWS I heard from this insight! Plus, now with the ability to move while having your hands up, you can finally stop players who pump fake a hundred times in the paint or where ever to get u to jump and draw a cheap foul. SO LONG PUMP FAKE ABUSERS!
so you think people just sit around and do nothing when they dont guard the ball? you sound just like them.
Ummm. yeah lol. Most people online just camp in the paint with their Center. I'm sure not every off-ball player does it, but 90% of the people I've played do.
You are afraid of getting burned. It's like telling your teammate to guard a player for you because you can't handle him. And that's perfectly fine, not every one is a lockdown defender. But my thing is, how do you ever expect to get better at defense if you never play on ball D and always tell someone else to guard your man for you?
Pippen became one of the best defenders in the NBA because he had to defend MJ in practice every day. That's all it takes, practice. Give on ball D a shot in 2K12 and you will see how fun it is man.
Same here, good ball movement and effective drives can destroy any zone.
IMHO the zone in 2K11 was simply broken.
The rotations were horrible which made the 2-3 and 3-2 unusable.
Which is a real shame for me since (as a euro...) I love those two strategies
I am loving this insight, at first I was a little skeptical about the on ball defense but I see it as an added benefit to play more on ball defense and level things out. The one thing I noticed that there is no dedicated take charge button or any mention of how do you take charges. So I hope this means you can draw charges/offense fouls by doing the following:
Using intense defense and beating your man to the spot they are going and they plow into you and you get the charge. You don't necessarily have to always be stationary to draw an offensive foul.
Using hands up right stick and the player barrels into you and you are stationary. Probably best suited for using in the paint but out of the restricted area under the basket to try to draw a charge.
They did mention in the post game insight if the offense if using a aggressive backdown and just backing you down you can "counter" with a flop or pull the chair by pulling the left stick away. So I see this as the other option to draw offensive fouls.
Saying all of that I hope the CPU AI of your teammates and against another user or CPU controlled team is smart enough to try to draw some of these charges without us the user having to do all of the work. We the user should not have to draw all the charges. The CPU controlled team as well as non user controlled players should be smart enough to try to draw a few based on their ratings.
can a player still jump from the freethrow line and block/contest a three point shot or have they fixed that issue...........tired in 2k11 of having an open 3pt shot only to have it blocked by someone running from the opposite side of court or from inside the key
I'm sorry, but IMO if u play off ball it's because you suck at on ball defense. My on ball is always 95% and higher and take pride in not taking the easy way out. Like others have said, if i wanted to play the cpu i would play offline. There is no excuse for playing off ball user vs user.
Would you like to share the answer?, cuz i can't seem to find it in this thread.
It's controllable - not automated.
The language used wasn't clear - you have to initiate it after the shot with the RS. And this will be different than the hands up. The result is contextual - the way it should be.

Most people start playing off-ball, like myself, because idiots usually ISO a great penetrating player and run around in circles till they see an opening. To defend this I select a help defender.

jeez why dont 2k just make it where you have to play onball and cant switch off when playing a human.
truth fatleg...I can't believe the reactions here. I like playing as the center for being an intimidating force in the middle. I can rock playing on ball D when I'm playing with someone next to me but when online with the input lag and as TalenT mentioned is why I hate playing online. So I'm sticking with my center.
all i can say is to the people that has a problem with people not playing on ball D is to DEAL WITH IT!
