NBA 2K12 News Post

Multiple outlets are spilling the beans about NBA 2K12's newest mode: NBA's Greatest. The mode seems to be an extension of The Jordan Challenge mode that was available in NBA 2K11.

This time around Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan and 10 other unannounced all-time greats will be featured in this new mode.

At this time, the unannounced players are not the only thing shrouded in mystery here. It's unclear how many different scenarios or teams will even be included in this mode. This is being intentionally done so fans debate who they think should be included, according to 2K Sports.

The folks at 2K Sports want to go even further when it comes to re-creating moments in the NBA's Greatest mode by mimicking broadcasts from the '80s and even '60s. This means different camera angles, replay styles or even black and white video in order to bring people into the historical aspects of these games.

The NBA's Greatest mode seems like a really smart one when considering the ongoing NBA lockout, as well as the success of The Jordan Challenge mode last year.

Hey fellas I’m an Australian bloke who loves my NBA – thought I’d throw my hat into the ring on the 15 retro inclusions that would really be stellar.

Any of Bill Russell’s Celts teams between 59 & 66
71 Bucks feat the big O and Lew Alcindor
Wilt’s 72 Lakers
83 Fo Fo Fo76ers with Moses and the Dr
Larry’s 86 Celts
Magic & Kareem 87
Zeke’s 88 Pistons
Sir Charles takes the 93 Suns oh so close
92 Dream Team
MJ 92 Bulls
The Dream’s 94 Rockets
Reggies '95 Pacers
MJ’s 96 Bulls
99 Spurs (cos fairs fair)
Shaq & Kobe 2001

And if we can be greedy throw in the next team of each year for them to play against to reach retro heaven.

One more thing that should be no sweat for you guys at 2K but will up the retro authenticity big time – Celtics sneakers pre 90s should all be black please!

Yeah, I know. I unlocked all the Jordans and I didn't play any of the Jordan challenges.

I just remember people saying there would "probably" be a code to unlock the Js and I never knew of one. I plan on playing a season with one of Jordan's Bulls teams, but just like in 2K11 I'm going to replace the current version of a team with it's historic version. I was hoping you could just play as historic teams without having to unlock them; I don't want to buy a box of Lucky Charms and have to "unlock" the marshmallows--they should be available to me because you know I want to use the marshmallows.

But hey--it's no biggie: I'm glad we have these historic teams. This game is shaping up to be like 2K's College Hoops 2K8--playable for years and years. Can't wait to use these greats.

Looks so. The Celtics number 11 looks like Sam Vincent...somewhat.

Are we actually that lazy nowadays with games that we can't accept a challenge in order to unlock things?

I'm not sure who "we" is, but I'm certainly not lazy. I think games should have certain items to be unlocked, but I'm not in the minority on this one. If one of the things 2K knows we want is historic teams, then they should be readily available after purchasing the game. Some people, like me, are die hard fans of one team; I'm simply saying I don't want to possibly have to play historic Lakers vs historic 76ers to unlock those teams. I play as the teams I know, and I know the Chicago Bulls of Jordan's era; I don't want to play as way-back-when Celtics and pull up with the back-up point guard for three when he's not that kind of player. I don't just play as anybody; I play as teams I am very familiar with.

Many people didn't like the fact that Jordans were unlocked by random hours of gameplay and I don't blame them. It was not one hour of gameplay like some said, and it wasn't two hours either; it was random, because I played two hours sometimes and unlocked nothing. I think it's completely justifiable to think you should have most if not all classic teams available at purchase.

Again, I'm the least lazy person you will ever meet. I accept challenges everyday; I recently tore my ACL, MCL, and meniscus but I'm ahead of schedule on my recovery so don't talk to me about lazy--video game or real world. But don't have in your sig that you're here to complain about the world and you have something to say to me about a small complaint about a little video game.

this is gonna be SICK, Apposed to having Dr J, Hakeem Olajuwan, Magic n Kareem and Jordan and Bird...They should bring back Dominique Wilkins for his matchup with Bird, leave out Karl Malone n Stockton cuz they were pretty borring to play with on 2k11...they should pick up Maybe the Early 2001 Lakers with Shaq in his prime along with young Afro Kobe, or maybe even stick in the 90s magic with Young Shaq and penny Hardaway...throw in some Reggie Miller and Stick in a young Wilt Chamberlain before the BEARD. Charles Barkely would be cool and maybe even a young KG going against the Kings with Chris Webber..and dont forget Allen Iverson...yu know how many 2K covers he's been on? He held 2K on his BACK at the begining of the 2k Franchise . A young TMac from the Magic would be pointless cuz they never got anywhere but would be cool to play with him or a young Raptor in VC....

I disagree utah jazz was the most difficult team to win with no athletic players malone is undersized to the garnets and duncans and other long athletic power forwards so you had to play fundamental basketball to win with the jazz like in real life.
so I would like jazz back it's something different taking another approach to win games.

I was tempted to pass on 2K12 thinking I could get a lot more out of 2K11 especially with a lockout... but this makes it oh so tempting, AS LONG AS they put the teams I hope they do. I skimmed this thread, but I see no mention of Patrick Ewing. You've got to snag one of those 90's Knicks teams in my opinion. Hopefully they don't double on teams. I saw someone mention a recent Shaq/Kobe Lakers team... really? They can't include everything, but there are many great players that I'd love to see and play as.

if they got the 60's era in the game then they need to put eaither wilts 100 point game or one of wilts 50 rebound games

I'd be surprised to not see the Knicks. With the '95 club being in last year's iteration, and with the inclusion of the '94 Rockets this year (New York's NBA Finals opponent), the classic Knicks seem primed for another appearance.

Meanwhile, I wouldn't mind a classic Shaq/Kobe Lakers team. On one hand, this team can be assembled pretty well by us on our own (players like Bryant, AC Green, Robert Horry, Ron Harper and Derek Fisher will probably already be in the game and the Staples Center has the same court art as it did back then). But on the other hand, there is a part of me that'd like to see 2K deliver a prime Shaquille O'Neal player package. It seems just as 2K was developing their signature packages, Shaq was on the decline, so his dunks weren't quite as Shaq-like in 2K as we'd expect (and rightfully so). It'd be cool to see him with a real arsenal. Also, a young, fro'd Kobe Bryant wouldn't be too shabby either.

I'm not even a Lakers guy, but I think it'd be fun to relive. With the inclusion of the '02 Kings, a 2000's Lakers team seems logical. Though, I feel what you mean. That feeling of, "I hope they don't include a recent classic team in lieu of a real classic team." I've decided I'm probably just going to be cool with whatever they throw at me. It's all a bonus. Plus, as I mentioned, it probably wouldn't be too hard for 2K to make a '00 Lakers team with so many things already accounted for (jerseys, arena, court art, many players).

# 214 dochalladay32 @ 08/06/11 08:57 PM
Hmmm, playing as Brian Shaw, John Salley and Glen Rice on the Lakers... yea, a 99-00 Lakers team or somewhere in that range would be ok, even as a Blazers fan. Since it isn't all about Jordan, I guess there is no guarantee that they use the '91 Lakers; probably go back further. I was taking that into account. Why have two teams 10 years apart? But if they go back to the 80's, then I think I could live with it depending on who else makes the cut. The Celtics are probably going to get 2 teams.

# 215 sportjames23 @ 08/06/11 10:31 PM
Heh, if the Shaq-Kobe Lakers are in, we can do the Shaw-Shaq Redemption (the Lakeshow version of the Coop-A-Loop).

# 216 alecast @ 08/07/11 08:32 PM
I don`t care about current rosters and everytime I play NBA 2k I simulate an 80`s or 90`s league.
When 2k11 was released I was so happy because there were many players from the past.
So for 2k12, here is my list of 80`s and 90`s teams (I`ll just leave 12 teams, because I`m assuming the three other spots will belong to 60`s and 70`s teams):

82-83 76`rs
85-86 celtics
86-87 lakers
87-88 hawks
88-89 cavs
88-89 pistons
89-90 blazers
90-91 bulls
92-93 suns
93-94 rockets
94-95 magic
95-96 sonics
96-97 jazz

Well, I listed 13 teams, not 12... anyway, hope all of these are in the game!!!!

# 217 VDusen04 @ 08/07/11 10:01 PM
I feel like this was glazed over, but how exactly are the final 10 matchups going to be decided? Did I read somewhere that there's just a loose "skeleton structure" and it'll be up to us the consumers to decide? How in the world will that go down? Or did I just make that up in a dream?

# 218 youvalss @ 08/07/11 10:09 PM
I'm not sure either. I mean, they definitely need the rights to put retired players in the game. It's not like they can just call whoever they want (a month before the game is done) and they magically appear in the game. It's locating players, getting rights, creating their faces etc.. This is why I think they already have pretty much everyone they want. They have probably "guessed" what teams/players people would want to play with.

Either way, it's not like if your favorite classic team isn't there you're not gonna buy it. I'm sure some here say they wouldn't, but how many of them really mean it?

I would love to see my grandfather in a basketball game (Joe Fulks). I doubt he'll be in, he's a legend but probably not one the greatest legends that would be in this game, even though he was one of the first. 99% of the people that play the game havn't even heard of him I'm betting.

Cool! I found him on Basketball Reference. Pretty good stats too, at least in PPG
