MLB 11 The Show News Post

This is a very very late addition/change to MLB 11 The Show. Kolbe and Jeff Ulman, one of our senior AI programmers, went into the cave this past weekend and re-wrote a massive amount of code for trades and off-season logic for franchise mode.

Has anything been worked on about that little glitch where someone gets injured by the computer controlled team doesn't sign anybody, making it where you can't sim past a date?

If not it's cool, just wanted to know if it had been looked at.

Thanks for all the info guys!

So while I'd love the ability to import my franchise like I did back on FPSFB, I also understand it's not and easy addition by any means.
I tend to think importing franchises in baseball would be more feasible than some other sports games. Even accounting for differences in player ratings, with the level of stat-tracking that exists in baseball as a sport (and should therefore exist in a baseball video game), it should be fairly simple to fill in any ratings blanks by using the player's many different stats to fill in their ratings.

In baseball, there's a stat or two that informs you on almost every ability a player has physically. If they built in an engine that examines players' production (stats) and used those stats to determine their actual ability ratings, they could fill in any holes that might exist when trying to convert an old franchise player set to a new game.

That's if they wanted to really do it up right by making sure it spits out accurate recreations of the players after your import them into a new title. Or they could go the lazy route, be more like the NCAA football to Madden NFL import process (where they basically keep guys names and sizes and college info intact and the rest gets jumbled) -- in which case you'd get the correct years and player names but you'd have to spend a day fixing player ratings before diving into your old franchise in the new game.

Here's hoping!

I remember when I found out about the feature in some EA Sports games where, when you play a game online, they e-mail you the boxscore, I thought we must be getting very close to the day when they'd finally give us the kind of raw stat data the more nerdy fans would like me would love. Something we could figure out how to import into a spreadsheet or something to properly keep track of our stats on the computer instead of fumbling through terrible videogame stat screens.

Still waiting on them to make it happen. Heck, even if they made it an extra that costs money, I'd be all over that. To better track my baseball and football and hockey dynasties. Maybe let me create a webpage-like directory to showcase my page, with screenshots and boxscores and compiled stats. I'd be in sports-gaming dork heaven. As is, I'd have to record all the stats myself, and that's just too much work.

Yes, it'd mainly be a straight import of all attributes.

I was addressing the concern of ratings being changed. Like if they created new player attributes that the last version of the game didn't have (like in Madden, one year a guy was measured just by Throwing Power and Throwing Accuracy, and the next year they had seperate attributes for short passes, intermediate passes, and deep passes). In those cases, if there are stats that inform how players should be rated, they could use accumulated stats to help decide those new ratings. Or just randomize them, whatever.

Will there be an increase in player stats in franchise mode? As of now, you can't even see which team players played for in previous year, nor can you see OPS or OBP or most other important stats in previous year. Since this is an important part in baseball, i think there should be detailed stats on all players for their career, not just the year that is being played.

I'm going to say this is what I am hoping for:
  • Three team trades
  • Some sort of 'counter offer' system
  • Some sort of better 'negotiation' system with free agents (counter offers, preferences on what city they want to play, etc.)
  • more than 3 players per side in a trade

I was wondering if anyone would be able to let me know if or when these features would be added to the game. I buy this game every year even while living overseas I had people bring it back to me so I could waste countless hours on it. As much of a fan as I am I still feel that these would be great new features to this already amazing game. Chicago White Sox FTW

I still can't believe how open and involved the dev team is with this community. We have questions, they give answers, we see results. It's incredible!

My biggest issue with trade logic isn't in what the computer does/doesn't accept. It's more in who the computer decides to trade. What I mean is, teams that are fighting for a playoff push or lead their division should not be trading away elite/valuable players. Teams in the basement that have no shot should look to unload bloated contracts or players that probably wouldn't resign after their contract years.

If that has been answered already I apologize for being redundant. But if this could be tweaked, it would put the game that much closer to perfection.

Thanks guys!

Before last year, the trading block worked correctly with those types of strategies. Teams making a playoff push would always put their best prospect(s) on the block and try to acquire a top MLB player to help them out. Teams that were out of it (rebuilding) put all their veterans on the block hoping to trade for younger players. Sometimes the two would work out, but last year because of the high amount of A-potential players in the base roster set, it threw everything off.

There have always been some bad trades such as top prospect for best middle reliever, but most of the trades made sense.

DO you think we will we get screenshots of the trade screen post deadline, before release?

Interested to see what went down.

Assuming this hasn't been done and would be very difficult to do, but is there a way to have arbitration and free agent contract demands tied to on-field performance rather than ratings and potential?

In 10, I went to arbitration with Yunel Escobar, coming off a 750 OPS year, and he got $17 million in arbitration. He was rated one of the highest players in the game, but it hadn't shown up on the field the previous season.

I have a question... When doing a fantasy draft... How many teams can you personally draft for?... There are four of us who play head to head games (09)... In that version only two teams can be controlled... BTW... We play at home (not online)... Thanks!

You could potentially draft for all 30 teams. The Show '10 added 30-Team Control, so you could control every team simultaneously if you wanted to.

for me, 60 bucks needs to give me more franchise [overhauls to the UI among other things. MLB Headlines. Its BRUTAL trying to gather info from around the league. someone threw a no-no? Good luck hearing about it], and better tv presentation.
its not there, so I can't justify spending 60.
I just dont see how people are expected to buy the gae every year.
When did that become mandatory, lest we be maligned for not supporting Sony.
I dont owe em anything, I bought NBA The Inside!

The changes that were made are awesome and i cant wait to see what 12 brings with another year of tweaks to those elements as well as a new franchise experience.
but for the people crying foul, send me 60 clams, if u wanna support sony, i'll be sure to use it on a copy.
for me, I aint Rockerfeller and Chien Ming wang is pitching like Bob Feller.

The Nats WILL rise!

I have to agree with you, I usually get the game every year. They've made a lot of improvements but Franchise hasn't changed much.
I doubt the create a player changed and gave me more options for hairstyles and etc so creating a player will be the same as last 3 years.
And the presentation is beyond old, I played the demo and was seeing the same cut scenes I've seen in the show for the past 3 years. So it makes me feel like I've seen it all before.
My biggest gripe is there presentation needs to be redone from scratch. People like me who have bought the show every year have memorized all of the commentary by heart now.
I'm just going to rent the game on Gamefly and see if it deserves a purchase. The demo had too much of a '10 feel, the new player models looked great but the animations and stadiums looked exactly the same as old.

Again with this '10 feel' thing. If it didn't feel like 10 there would be something wrong. Maybe for MLB12 they can regut the whole award-winning game for you and change every single aspect so it's new?

Hey, the game might not be nearly as good if they try to change everything, but at least it will be "fresh"

I wouldn't dismiss the staleness of the title so fast...it's an issue that over time will affect sales...I think if they just completely re-did commentary, that'd go a long way

Did AT&T have some major renovation that only you are aware of over the off-season????

You know the more i think about this the more that this late change probably isnt getting the kudos it deserves.

This new and improved logic should make a massive difference to the realism of trades and off-season stuff, an area we all knew needed a kick in the backside.

I think the franchise junkies who really get into the specifics and nuances of the off-season will really appreciate, that whilst unheralded, this could potentially be the biggest addition in many peoples eyes.

A big thanks to Kolbe and Jeff for holing themselves up for that weekend to get this done.
