It is a totally different game, and may not be as sim as people would like, but it's fun. it's different!
The graphics may not be stellar, but i'm hoping they'll be sharper in the retail version.
The controls are tough to master, but very rewarding...especially when you sink that first jumper.
I started with the "Become Legendary" mode. Very similar to the competition's "My Player" mode, from what the demo portrayed, anyway.
I got a 3.3/10 score, 29th in the draft. It told me I could import my place in the draft in the retail version...and I'm going to! i can't wait to see who drafts me!
I then played the 4th Q of Lakers/Celtics. It will take some getting used to, I couldn't do all the things I was used to doing at the drop of a hat. I still don't know how to get around defenders with the crossovers, etc. But it was fun.
The new commentators were refreshing. We really needed something new.
And the presentation was great. Not stellar, but better. NBA on ESPN music playing was nice to hear in an EA game.
All in all, they took a step in the right direction. I will buy this game, and like it!
I hope anyone that was hesitant to download the demo before reading this will at least give it a try. It's worth it, and it might surprise you.
good analyzation.

That's the same progression guys on the dev team made as well. N/S is easier to learn, broadcast looks better (still not sure why it is so much different).

Once you get the controls down to the point that you aren't thinking about it, broadcast isn't any more difficult to play in.

I liked the grading scale in BL mode. I also liked the satisfaction of ripping up John Wall. Controls are cool but could improve. Everything else...meh.

If the AI was half as great as the controls are, I would be picking this up on day 1. Sadly, that may have been the plan from the beginning. Year 2 and 3 is where the AI and Animations get their shine. Practicing in the gym with my player backed down, watching to see what hand the ball is in, so I could correctly use the L stick, R stick, and LT Gather to correctly get what I want out of my player is quite rewarding.. I can definitely see this game shining in user vs. user battles.

Heck, I was having the time of my life earlier just trying to win the game. Both teams going back and forth. Jermaine Oneal dunking like crazy. Nothing realistic in the realm of "simulation" basketball. But it was just fun. If you can be that OPEN and accepting of the product, and if thats what youre in the market for, this one can be a fun one. It's crazy because I was so immersed in this fantasy cartoon land and I was loving every minute of it. The confusing aspect was seeing plays and running those. I guess yielding some sort of balance. The immersion doesnt make sense but I guess video games can do that to you.

I personally wouldn't get much out of a user vs. user game, so this one may be left on the shelves.

Potential is there. Controls are fun, but throwing all your eggs in one basket may yield disastrous sales results

I Just threw an oop of the backboard to myself with Kobe!! it was sick and it was done by mistake! I played the demo for 2k for a bit then went back to Elite. I was Fish, I had Kobe come over and set a screen for me, I used it, he rolled to the hoop...WIDE OPEN LANE!! so I hit him in stride with a wrap around bounce pass, and when kobe got the ball, since I had just went backed and played the demo for 2k I went to hit the Turbo button in 2K (the pass button in Elite) and up on the right stick (which if you havent figured out RT AND UP is a oop in Elite) and Kobe throws it off the board goes up grabs it and tomahawks it home one handed. It was sweet!!!! also I have found out how to yo-yo dribble now two. Its getting better!!! Just fix those damn rebound and block animations!!!

Pretty much, Rub. There are definitely things I like about this game beyond the controls but the AI is just poor. I may pick this game up once the price drops significantly to play online. I can't justify purchasing this game early on to solely play it online since I rarely venture online.

Live 10 was the same way (hum vs hum against a sim player was GREAT IMO) but the AI was still better. Maybe the other games' demo has me more jaded too since that kinda blew me away.

Next year priorities 1 and 1A have to be animations/sig stuff and AI. You can see some potential here but in this day and age you need a well rounded game for it to do well and right now the two things I mentioned are well below average IMO.

I don't think we'll see more of the EA "three-year cycle/reset" next year since FIFA and NHL preceded Elite with the RTP. I think EA will settle in with their course this time around and improve each year - hopefully.

Kudos to the dev team on here for sticking around and trying their hardest. I hope you guys are on the right path to successful game.

i get the impression that most of the people working on Elite are casual basketball fans. there seems to be a lack of understanding of the finer points of the sport and the movement of the human body. study real basketball and do tons of mo-cap to get real movement that is appropriate.

Constructive post

I said this to me, when I played the demo last year: "This game is great and fun, simply because I can be 1, 2 even 3 hours just making moves/combination of moves, fluidly, responsive after my input, and real b-ball moves, in the Hangar"

This year I can say the same, plus having even more control over my player, plus post moves, and aiming at the basket, with the same responsiveness and fluidity and added depth, in the practice court

Yes I know, this is a 5v5 game, so here we go:

I will not talk about the visuals of the game plus the signature stuff that makes this an NBA experience, I "know" it will be a priority next year and it was not this year, so it would be unfair of me to bash something it was not changed due to the huge amount of time they spent in other aspects of the game

"Feel the game"

- I can feel the game with the new controls, they are great, but I am sorry, without turbo, I don´t feel nor see my player changing gears, in fact I see big men being faster then my PG occasionally.
If you want the player to feel the game, the turbo button is needed, but that is just me, and because this is a EA feature (no turbo in other sports games) I have no faith that it will return in the future

- rEAnimator said before that the fact that players jump so hight to contest shots on defense is because it was almost impossible to block jump shots before, and that was unrealistic

I am sorry sir, for me it is more unrealistic that a jump shot being blocked depend on the defender, rather then depending on the offensive player, I will give an example:

Does anyone remember Mr Shane Battier defending Kobe, in the 4-3 against Houston??? Shane played great D on him, contested every single shot, but by no means he will block him.....

Why??? Because all Shane does is react to Kobe, and when he tries do anticipate the move, and actually nails it perfectly, all he can do, is contest with a hand in his face, because Kobe jumps hight when jump shooting, and the ball release is very hight, so it is physically impossible for Shane, even if he anticipates the move, to block the shot, at least 2 times in the same game, I am talking about 1-1 situations

In elite, the shot being blocked, depends only on the ability of the defensive user to react and position himself correctly, it is very easy to do so, it should not, and that is a unrealistic part of the game

Please give player 2 different vertical ratings, with and without momentum, this game continues to play too much over the rim, if this is done paying of course close attention to the actual ratings everything will be okay

- Too easy to make alley oops, and I think this is again, because players jump too hight

- No consistent box-outs, I saw 2 put back dunks after FT misses and other "were is my man" kind of rebounds

- Too many steals, I am not talking about me not protecting the ball, or passing to a crowded paint, I am talking about myself spaming the steal button, to see if this is going to be a cheese aspect, and I can definitely say, it will be a steal fest online, and even against AI it will
Playing allstar is chalenging, when playing superstar the AI has 5 steals per second....

- There was an animation that was triggered when Paul went for a rebound, he jumped straight up, with KG, no contact, but when he reached the floor he lost his balance and took 2 or 3 steps out of bounds, were I could not control him, KG of course had grabbed the rebound and alone under the basket just dunked easy, did not like that animation, at least it was triggered in the wrong time, with no contact mid-air he shouldn´t lose balance

- Dind´t like the force fields pushing me around in the Become legendary, specially on D

I just listed what I think are the things that need adjustments, based on the demo, that I feel is fair to analyze knowing what the focus was this year

But I can say that this list doesn´t destroy the experience, in fact, I am so engaged on the game, that these, in my book are just little WTF moments, that of course I would like to not see, but I know they will be analysed by devs. The complex and huge control of my player, and the crowd on this game will make a lot for the other unfinished parts of the game, at least on my book.
But I totally understand people that want a total package in the year 2010, I will try to buy this game (not hight on money), to give more deep feedback, because in my book, this game is as raw, as talented as Kevin Durant

oh, and by the way, the intro with Mr. Kevin Durant.... SICK

I´m out y´all

Ok I finally downloaded the demo and played. The graphics obviously took a hit. I will say the game feels good, im not being sucked into anything except sometimes it did feels like I was stuck in sand while Wall drove right by me. But yea im not sucked into anything for the most part, I have control but it just seems like the game is stale. I think they should relinquish some of the control and add more animations. Also everybody is jumping around like superman that needs to be toned down. Some of the fade away and layup animations look bad they need to be changed. Its way too easy to block shots and steal the ball, so I guess the ball is too loose. The game is very generic, its like it needs more meat on the gameplay. We need more animations, the pace of the game needs to be slowed down. We need foot planting, everyone is sliding. Also we need more sig, everyone seems like the same player. Hopefully over time this can all be addressed. Oh yea the RTP needs some more work. Some of the in air collisions are very unrealistic. Theres mostly negative in my impression but thats what I got from the game. As far as buying the game I more than likely will as I get both games every year. I hope the devs look at my post and consider upgrading some of the things I mentioned.

I would have to say the game seems like a arcade basketball type. Not that its a bad thing but if your gonna claim to be sim then it would be bad to have the game arcadish. I think this game is more for the casual gamer and not the die hard sim head. I have to disagree with most of the post that were bashing the game like it was the end of EA. Im disappointed, but its still playable. We'll see what happens.

Im playing around in the practice arena and having fun. I love the controls but everytime you take a hook shot while backing down, if you hold the shot stick all the way it goes in every time even from 3 point range. Im not sure if it happens in game though im going to check it out

edit: Seems to work most of the time in game as well although not automatic. Its prob about 75% from anywhere within in the 3 point line with everyone from PG to C. Someone else try it out and let me know if its just me going crazy. It requires no timing like a regular shot, just hold the gesture. To do it press LB to back down and the do a quarter circle from either left/right up to 12 oclock. (has to be perfect 12 oclock though)

edit 2: i have been playing on pro...going to try all star

Any 360 users notice this problem ???

I see it when alot of players are in the key and either......

A) player goes in for a lay up

B) player grabs an offensive board.

Is this just a PS3 thing ??

Has somebody made some slider tweaks to improve the demo? Despite it has (many) flaws, I am enjoying the demo and I really like the controls.

I have played both the PS3 and 360 demos...PS3 has stuttering/lag around the basket...360 does not have the lag...

PROS

After much practice, the controls are GREAT (see first con) BUT......
No Turbo is a plus to me
Crowd Noise/Commentary is ok
A nice beefy demo

CONS

The Animations negate the new controls....the animations are stale and weird at times....

No Sig animations?
So much wrong that has not been corrected after many years on next gen.

Graphics are laughable and really have no excuse for being this poor.

EA needs to get it together...they could have really had something special this year, and instead they have a thrown together product that is an embarrassment to the sport of basketball.

# 659 bigsmallwood @ 09/22/10 01:33 AM
The controls are really GREAT once you get the hang of them and it helps make the gameplay shine.....(as much as humanly possible.....)

# 660 brahmagoul @ 09/22/10 01:34 AM
The demo kind of feels like an early, new-generation title to me. There's some things I like, but it feels lacking in gameplay. One thing I expected to be able to do is have a defender raise his arms. Doesn't seem like you can do this. Everytime I push up on the analog, the defender jumps. That might be my biggest pet peeve.
