Madden 09 News Post

Well as I post this it’s officially been exactly two weeks since Madden officially launched, and wow it sure has been a busy time for us. I truly hope everyone is enjoying the game, and I wanted to drop an update on some things we’ve been working on for our 2nd patch. We feel that without a doubt this encapsulates the top issues we’re hearing from the forums and community leaders, and hope that this list truly makes Madden NFL 09 the ultimate sports game for you.
  1. Kicking play disconnect: If two opponents play a game with two different camera angles, in any situation where a game winning or tying kick was to be made, a disconnect could occur. “ActionCam” forces the game to go into slow-motion to add drama to these late kicks, but unfortunately the Classic camera does not, thus forcing the “disconnect”. This has been fixed…and FYI all cameras will still be able to be used after the patch.
Workaround until the patch: If possible, ensure that you and your opponent have the same camera type chosen before starting an online game.
  2. Stability issues in the play call / halftime highlights / postgame highlights screens (especially in Franchise mode after training games): This was a hard one to track down as not everyone was seeing it , we did find the issue however with some Instant Replay / cache corruption, and have a fix ready for patch 2.
Workaround until the patch: Save and re-boot after any point where you have entered the game. We learned that the likelihood of this issue appearing is magnified after multiple loads into and out of the game engine. From what we’ve seen so far, people that have tried playing only one game at a time (or even one Franchise training session at a time), and saving/rebooting afterwards, have had zero crashes.
  3. Stability issues with Madden IQ end of game popup: This has been fixed.
Workaround until the patch: Always choose “No” at the Madden IQ end of game popup.
  4. “WR direct snap” exploit: Cheesers found an exploit to direct snap to a WR for easy short yardage gain. Not only are we fixing this play (i.e. we aren’t removing it), we are also going to be re-setting records for anyone with a winning record that has been found to be using this play.
  5. Franchise Progression / Regression (or lack thereof): The lack of higher numbers was a tuning value that I think everyone agreed was just too low. This has been juiced up so you should see more realistic progression now.
  6. Edited players don’t progress: Players were not progressing after their jersey number (or pretty much any other attribute) was edited. This has been fixed.
  7. Stability issue when exiting Madden ’93 in CE version: This has been fixed.
  8. Deep ball glitch: Some enterprising gamers found a way to throw a deep ball while crossing the LOS and hit a receiver wide open at a decent rate. We addressed this by making sure the DB will no longer break on the ball when the QB crosses the line while throwing.
  9. CPU running out of bounds: This bug appears when the CPU tries to switch hands while running to the sidelines. This is fixed for patch 2.
  10. Penalty sliders ineffective: A common complaint from the hardcore community was the lack of effect from the penalty sliders. We increased these substantially for patch 2.
  11. Field degradation: Another common complaint was the lack of field degradation. Our effect was very subtle, which was also getting overshadowed by our lighting and post effects, so we increased this effect for the patch.
  12. Stability issue with the Eagles and a full ring meter: We found and fixed a rare issue where the gamer could run into stability issues while using the Eagles in mini-games with a ring meter that was completely full.
  13. Play call screen hitch: We found and fixed a bug that was causing a noticeable hitch when exiting the play call screen
  14. Prevent Defense issue: We found and fixed an issue where defenders sharing a deep zone/prevent assignment would loosen their coverage (because they thought the other guy was covering for them), which allowed the receiver to get behind them even though they were in Prevent.
  15. Brett Favre stats: With the late addition of Brett Favre, we were not able to get his Career and Season statistics into the game for the roster update. This has now been added for patch 2.
  16. Defensive Preplay Mis-cue: We found and fixed an issue where defenders would leave their man wide open in a Cover 3.
  17. CPU quick-snap: A very common complaint on the forums was the speed at which the CPU snapped the ball. We added a random length of time (no less than 5 seconds) for the CPU to wait and even make pre-play adjustments.
  18. Online playbook switch: We fixed a small annoying little issue where playbooks were re-setting to the defaults after the playbook select popup was closed.
I hope this makes everyone quite happy. :-)

The patch is being tested as I write this and will be sent off for verification in the morning, so we are targeting less than a 3 week turnaround from today for this to hit the general public. (Woohoo!) We will also make sure to provide updates as the patch progresses through the 3rd party approval process. As a side note, as of this moment there have been no changes to database schema, so you won’t have to re-start your Franchise or delete any files.

It makes us very stoked to be able to make this many changes for a patch, and do them based directly on community feedback. There are always going to be folks that are upset if what they felt was a top issue wasn’t addressed, but I’ll state again (as I have before) that we have to keep balancing this work against Madden NFL 2010. The longer we keep going on patches, the less we can add to the following year’s product. On a side note, there is also a Franchise stability issue that we have been investigating, and we are working feverishly to get this figured out. We will update on that issue as soon as we can. As for the items above, I personally feel that we have hit a very good balance of top items because many of these issues can actually detract from an enjoyable experience, which is obviously the last thing we want.

And now that this patch is nearly out the door, I figured I’d drop some more good news… We have officially started building the TOTALLY FREE “Sim Madden Gamer” DLC pack, which includes Accelerated Clock, a “Classic” Controller Configuration, CPU Sliders, and Community Gamerpics for 360. I’ll state again that there’s no promise that this goes through, but we have nearly every one of these features actually ‘done’ internally, so now we have to figure out how to get Microsoft and Sony to allow us to release them.

Thanks everyone – keep the feedback coming, and let's keep this train a-rollin'!

Same here.

Also, Ian mentioned having to get MS/Sony to approve the DLC. Couldn't they just put this out in the same manner as they do a roster update? Just curious.

Roster actually go through the EA servers.

thats what I meant. Couldn't EA put the DLC for Madden out thru their servers like a roster update instead of going through MS/Sony?

Sorry, I didn't make that clear in my original post.

One of the developers on here said that the ability to do so wasn't actually in the game and joked they would have to "patch it in." I think that having EA server support for patches and DLC is an underrated item for the 2010 wishlist.

thanks man. Now that you mention it, I do recall reading something like that.

I have been playing around with this more. Specifically getting into franchise season 3 by simming every event, then trying specific actions to see what "breaks it." (In my mind, re-booting every 17 seconds was not an option)

When testing player editing, I was able to successfully change the players name, number, accessories... all without problems. But, when I tried to change their position, player training froze during intro loading.

Tested it twice, froze both times. Maybe it's just coincidence, but it doesn't seem to be.

Hope this helps.

EDIT: Actually, this is not quite right. You cannot edit a players position, and then change it back to its original.

Is there a way to download the patches on a computer and then upload to the PS3 if I don't have online for the PS3?

Incredibly, incredibly late on this one, but if all of that stuff is indeed 'fixed' in the second patch... wow. If it all works as intended, kudos to the Madden team for addressing community concerns...

However, unless I overlooked something, I see no mention of CPU QB accuracy. I'm guessing much of the 40+ pages could have been on this very subject, but I haven't been to the Madden forum much lately. Read the Ian's first post & replied like a schmo... Sorry!

There is hope that the addition of CPU sliders will lower CPU QB Accuracy.

This cant come soon enough, I am so sick of losing to these idiots who cheat. I really hope that the madden team comes through with the promise to delete wins of those who cheat.

Yeah, I just went and re-read Ian's initial post. I somehow managed to miss the paragraph about the DLC. Hopefully they can get that stuff approved & out the virtual-door!

Just be happy that madden is being patched a quickly as it is.
A slide in this community is needed, for a while this place has been known as the EA *** kissers forums around the web. I don't like that EA got the license at the time they got it but I blame the NFL for being ignorant, but since EA got the license what have they given us? Every year there are problems that need to be fixed or the game is nearly unplayable causing many returns. I have played many games on the 360 since I bought it over 2 years ago and no game has froze like this game or last years madden. Other companies can make sports games that are great without freezing so why not EA. They have the most money, but they seem to use too much on marketing.

You won't see respect and appreciation from the majority when they are stuck with a game that doesn't work half the time and lacks so much. Plus, nothing is worse hearing from a few saying their copies have never froze. Thats like telling EA that theres nothing wrong and just concentrate on making a flawed Madden 2010. I'm beyond frustrated only being able to play 1 franchise game at a time because if I try to play 2 it will freeze even if I quit the franchise mode and reload.

2k was having troubles with freezing in the past couple mlb games and you know what they did? They dropped Kush games because they proved they didn't know what the hell they were doing because if you can release a game that freezes year after year that just shows ignorance in programming and laziness in testing. EA gets away with it all the time and were stuck watching developers for this game talk it up like its the next big thing in sports gaming every year. WHAT?

Patching is the worst thing that could have happened this gen because it allows a company like EA to half *** their games and just reel in 60+ dollars from millions of gamers that need an updated NFL game. When EA can release a Madden game with zero freezing, realistic game play, and great presentation out of the box I'll take back everything bad I have said about them the past few years and I'll start buying all EA sports titles but I have a feeling a pole shift will occur before that happens.

No that is the reply to people defending the game and thier main argument being "no one forced you to purchase it"

Ok, this made me laugh. "forced into purchasing/renting the game"? What kind of marketing is EA using these days.

I love how 2-3 people quoted the above section of my post & then totally neglected that "If I wanted any new NFL experience this year". That's kind of an important part of the sentence, but everyone decides to exclude that part.

Now I understand how people get misquoted in the press all the time. Yeah it is a funny statement if the bold ed text was the entire sentence, but it wasn't.

The fact remains, if you want a new NFL experience this year you have only one choice. Read the entire post and answer in context to that. Yeah I liked 2k...I'd like any competition at this point. Fact remains both their football games freeze, but apparently that's OK now a days. People have accepted it, so it's not going to change. So who's more at fault, EA or the consumer who buys it and acts like nothing is wrong? "These things happen" seems to fix everything now a days.

I rented the game so I'm lucky. I just send it back to gamefly instead of keeping it. I haven't purchased an EA product since the exclusive deal, and this kind of product isn't going to break that streak.

I'm not sure how I can be excited about this patch if I still can't go through 2 years of franchise mode without it crashing and burning.

Wow, you really took what I said and ran with it didn't you.

I meant nothing personal towards you in any of my comments, just a) stating my observation on the arguments back and forth and b) just having a laugh at what I bolded in your comment.

Thats it man. Sorry if that came across as a personal attack at you, it really wasn't meant that way.

I've been a member of these forums for a long, long time -- and I don't remember them ever being an EA love-fest.

But it would not hurt for someone to answer our questions concerning Franchise freezing. I am tired of scrolling through threads looking for info and finding nothing but opinions, bickering, complaining and crap talking. I am not a gossip queen and I look to this site for useful information or positive feedback. It seems no matter what, the threads always get off topic. Now, I know it has been stated that FREEZING issues will be addressed in the 2nd patch, BUT there have been multiple kinds of FREEZING issues in the game. SO, I would like to see if I can get it clarified- Will the Franchise FREEZING issue be fixed? Like the post above, I am excited about the Progression being adjusted but it will only matter if you can play multiple seasons! Thank you in advance for your intelligent answers.

Anyone with some insight like to answer my question? Or am I going to have to continue to scroll through endless threads of people whining about what should be! I can recall the same whining and complaining on the EA boards back when the Madden series was debuting on the PS2. Every year, no matter what, people are unsatisfied with Madden. Every year, including Madden 2005- Ray Lewis cover (which in my opinion was Madden at its best) people complained on the forums. People say, every year, that they will not buy Madden again and EA this EA that. It's all B.S. because the majority of those people go cop it the very next year!!!!

Also, FYI, I didn't buy Madden on next gen until last year. I did not buy a Madden game in 2006 or 2007. I backed up my personal feelings and didn't disappoint myself. Last year's game was much improved on next-gen but the Franchise freeze was not cool. Oh well, I had fun playing it for what it was worth. This year, I admit I expected better and for the most part it is a fun game. My concern is Franchise being fixed, which brings me back to my original post and question. Once I know the answer, then I know what to expect and what I need to do to enjoy the game for what it is worth.

Live in reality folks, it is what it is! I have been playing football video games since Atari. From Tecmo Bowl, Super Tecmo Bowl, Madden on Sega Genesis, Joe Montana's football on the PC, Game Day on PS1, Madden on PS1 and PS2, NFL2K on Dreamcast......I liked all those games and had lots of fun playing them! I played them for what they were worth! Madden will get better as it always does in one area or another. Franchise, in my opinion, is the last thing they need to get straight on Next Gen. First, the freezing issues, the progression/regression system and then the minor details like Pro Bowl helmets and SUper Bowl details. Every other aspect in the game has gotten better!

The last little bit of insight I have for you long time Madden fans is, EA has gone after the demands of the younger generation. The younger generation does not know what life is like without a computer and internet access, us Tecmo Bowlers do. There is your marketing gap. EA has put more effort into ONLINE gameplay because the market is pointing toward the younger generation these days! Frankly, there is more demand for online/tournament style MAdden play than Franchise mode in 2008. Madden Challenge- head to head battling! That tournament and T.V. show does not advertise Franchise mode.

Do you see where I'm going with this? The demand has to be there, then they will focus on Franchise mode like they use to. Franchise mode use to be the #1 or #2 attraction when it came to why people buy and play Madden. It is not anymore. It is for me and it is for many, many other Madden die hards but not for the majority of younger gamers. For every person on these forums speaking their mind and voicing their concerns, there are many more who are playing the game online or against their buddies at home and could give a crap less about our venting or our feelings!

If you understand this, then maybe we can take a more positive approach towards getting a product we will be satisfied with. Those are my thoughts for what they are worth. Please- I would like to know if the patch will fix the Franchise freezing. Thank you.

You're new here, so just a tip.

Break up your text and make it easier to read. I'm willing to say that the reason no one is responding to your post is because it's one block of text.
