Madden 09 News Post

Well as I post this it’s officially been exactly two weeks since Madden officially launched, and wow it sure has been a busy time for us. I truly hope everyone is enjoying the game, and I wanted to drop an update on some things we’ve been working on for our 2nd patch. We feel that without a doubt this encapsulates the top issues we’re hearing from the forums and community leaders, and hope that this list truly makes Madden NFL 09 the ultimate sports game for you.
  1. Kicking play disconnect: If two opponents play a game with two different camera angles, in any situation where a game winning or tying kick was to be made, a disconnect could occur. “ActionCam” forces the game to go into slow-motion to add drama to these late kicks, but unfortunately the Classic camera does not, thus forcing the “disconnect”. This has been fixed…and FYI all cameras will still be able to be used after the patch.
Workaround until the patch: If possible, ensure that you and your opponent have the same camera type chosen before starting an online game.
  2. Stability issues in the play call / halftime highlights / postgame highlights screens (especially in Franchise mode after training games): This was a hard one to track down as not everyone was seeing it , we did find the issue however with some Instant Replay / cache corruption, and have a fix ready for patch 2.
Workaround until the patch: Save and re-boot after any point where you have entered the game. We learned that the likelihood of this issue appearing is magnified after multiple loads into and out of the game engine. From what we’ve seen so far, people that have tried playing only one game at a time (or even one Franchise training session at a time), and saving/rebooting afterwards, have had zero crashes.
  3. Stability issues with Madden IQ end of game popup: This has been fixed.
Workaround until the patch: Always choose “No” at the Madden IQ end of game popup.
  4. “WR direct snap” exploit: Cheesers found an exploit to direct snap to a WR for easy short yardage gain. Not only are we fixing this play (i.e. we aren’t removing it), we are also going to be re-setting records for anyone with a winning record that has been found to be using this play.
  5. Franchise Progression / Regression (or lack thereof): The lack of higher numbers was a tuning value that I think everyone agreed was just too low. This has been juiced up so you should see more realistic progression now.
  6. Edited players don’t progress: Players were not progressing after their jersey number (or pretty much any other attribute) was edited. This has been fixed.
  7. Stability issue when exiting Madden ’93 in CE version: This has been fixed.
  8. Deep ball glitch: Some enterprising gamers found a way to throw a deep ball while crossing the LOS and hit a receiver wide open at a decent rate. We addressed this by making sure the DB will no longer break on the ball when the QB crosses the line while throwing.
  9. CPU running out of bounds: This bug appears when the CPU tries to switch hands while running to the sidelines. This is fixed for patch 2.
  10. Penalty sliders ineffective: A common complaint from the hardcore community was the lack of effect from the penalty sliders. We increased these substantially for patch 2.
  11. Field degradation: Another common complaint was the lack of field degradation. Our effect was very subtle, which was also getting overshadowed by our lighting and post effects, so we increased this effect for the patch.
  12. Stability issue with the Eagles and a full ring meter: We found and fixed a rare issue where the gamer could run into stability issues while using the Eagles in mini-games with a ring meter that was completely full.
  13. Play call screen hitch: We found and fixed a bug that was causing a noticeable hitch when exiting the play call screen
  14. Prevent Defense issue: We found and fixed an issue where defenders sharing a deep zone/prevent assignment would loosen their coverage (because they thought the other guy was covering for them), which allowed the receiver to get behind them even though they were in Prevent.
  15. Brett Favre stats: With the late addition of Brett Favre, we were not able to get his Career and Season statistics into the game for the roster update. This has now been added for patch 2.
  16. Defensive Preplay Mis-cue: We found and fixed an issue where defenders would leave their man wide open in a Cover 3.
  17. CPU quick-snap: A very common complaint on the forums was the speed at which the CPU snapped the ball. We added a random length of time (no less than 5 seconds) for the CPU to wait and even make pre-play adjustments.
  18. Online playbook switch: We fixed a small annoying little issue where playbooks were re-setting to the defaults after the playbook select popup was closed.
I hope this makes everyone quite happy. :-)

The patch is being tested as I write this and will be sent off for verification in the morning, so we are targeting less than a 3 week turnaround from today for this to hit the general public. (Woohoo!) We will also make sure to provide updates as the patch progresses through the 3rd party approval process. As a side note, as of this moment there have been no changes to database schema, so you won’t have to re-start your Franchise or delete any files.

It makes us very stoked to be able to make this many changes for a patch, and do them based directly on community feedback. There are always going to be folks that are upset if what they felt was a top issue wasn’t addressed, but I’ll state again (as I have before) that we have to keep balancing this work against Madden NFL 2010. The longer we keep going on patches, the less we can add to the following year’s product. On a side note, there is also a Franchise stability issue that we have been investigating, and we are working feverishly to get this figured out. We will update on that issue as soon as we can. As for the items above, I personally feel that we have hit a very good balance of top items because many of these issues can actually detract from an enjoyable experience, which is obviously the last thing we want.

And now that this patch is nearly out the door, I figured I’d drop some more good news… We have officially started building the TOTALLY FREE “Sim Madden Gamer” DLC pack, which includes Accelerated Clock, a “Classic” Controller Configuration, CPU Sliders, and Community Gamerpics for 360. I’ll state again that there’s no promise that this goes through, but we have nearly every one of these features actually ‘done’ internally, so now we have to figure out how to get Microsoft and Sony to allow us to release them.

Thanks everyone – keep the feedback coming, and let's keep this train a-rollin'!

Anyone who says, "they don't have to fix anything, and they get no incentive for fixing something", that's exactly right, agree 100%.

Although I will admit, when they do this, in my mind I am thinking, "well next year if there's any issues they will be fixed so why not by Madden day 1".

# 282 uscrebel @ 08/28/08 05:51 PM
not sure if this has been mentioned but one thing I have noticed is that when you edit a player, the players background information like when they got drafted and what not goes away. I know this is not a big deal but it's something I have noticed ever since next generation gaming has started.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think for $60 or $80 a game sold be free of major errors out of the box. Maybe once every few years something might slip through, but not on an annual basis.

I agree.

Not saying it should be flawless, but the obvious stuff that should be caught in testing like...regression/progression, CPU running out of bounds etc...

yeah, yeah, yeah, "it should've been fixed out of the box". Well, no one told you to run out and buy it at launch without waiting for impressions to see how the game played. EA could just do what they normally do and give us all the middle finger and tell us it'll be fixed next year. Instead, they interact with the boards this year and take our suggestions under advisement and work hard to implement these wishes through a patch/DLC and they still are being thrown under the bus. This game could've shipped with all the patch fixes and most of you still would've found something to gripe about. Please, please, please, wait a few weeks before you buy 2010 since $60 seems to set so many back.

Well, I tried what you said Ian for the fix to franchise freezing and it worked the first time but not once since. I save after a game, quit franchise mode, reload the franchise and the game still freezes at the first play call screen. If the patch fixes this than it can't come soon enough because this is beyond frustrating.

# 287 Skyyplum @ 08/29/08 12:29 AM
Plus one more thing, how can some of you say that the problems on that list don't make the game unplayable? I think when a game freezes in certain areas non stop to the point where you have to shut your system down is an issue that can make a game unplayable. Plus shutting a system down over and over is not very good for the system .

I think it's interesting some of us see no freezes (such as myself), while others do.

Shouldn't that tell people that it is hard to tell what is causing the crashes and, therefore, fix them?

That "yeah yeah you didn't have to run out an buy it" argument is tired man! They brought this all upon themselves by taking the cowards way out and making it so they had zero competition in the market.

People have every right to hold EA to a higher standard due to this, and the dog sludge that they put out this year wouldn't have been acceptable with even 2 other competitors. They wanted it all, and now people are going to expect a ton from them...especially me. I always played both games when there wasn't a choice, but now that there isn't I'm always going to want what was in the other game also.

The one year 2k get their football game on track, and had a great platform to build on for years to come, and it was squashed, so yeah people have every right to go off on it. You have no other option thanks to this mess, so of course people are going to want to buy it and hope for the best. When it doesn't live up to the hype they have every right to get mad.

On top of all that, since when has it been "ok" to release games that freeze? Never, but now that's becoming the standard, and they will just patch it later. This is exactly what people didn't want with the ability to patch game, and unfortunately EA is doing exactly what people feared patching ability in games on consoles would do. Freezes hardly ever happened before the patchable systems, but now it's starting to be common place.

So yeah....I was kinda forced into purchasing/renting the game if I wanted any new NFL experience this year, so I'm going to vent as much as I see fit due to EA wanting to be the head NFL @##%# and them not coming even close to living up to what they should be.

This is the group I'm in.

To me...Madden '09' is by far the best playing [gameplay wise] Madden game of this generation. I really like the game...warts and all. Now I don't like to have to play with blinders on over certain things, but many of these issues are being addressed with patch #2. So that will help a lot...and I'm thankful for that.

As for the freezing issues...myself, I've just started my franchise. So I haven't as of yet suffered any lock ups. But of all the issues, for franchise gamers...your franchise freezing up IMO is the biggest problem. For me, no other issue is as frustrating as having 2-3 seasons worth of my time invested into franchise mode...only to have all those hours wasted by having the game lock up.

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that some "stability" issues are being addressed with patch #2. [in game freezes] But franchise lock ups overall...were not. Please correct me if I'm mistaken.

In the meantime...and however Madden '09' ends up after the patches and DLC has run it's course, I plan on enjoying the game the best I can. All I really hope for is that a great deal of my time isn't wasted by the dreaded franchise freeze. Barring that...I'll be more than pleased with this years game.

You're missing a key fact. The NFL approached developers, not the other way around.

You're not forced to do anything.

WTF? I think EA should hire better testers
I read this morning a letter in an English newspaper claiming that the new Tiger Woods is full of glitches as well. Apparently, when you beat Tiger at golf, the game crashes

Haha, you gotta laugh. Good old EA. Can't wait to see what problems FIFA's got

Spot on - they release a game that freezes then people come on here and say stuff like "you didn't have to buy it" or "you're acting like a spoilt child you should be grateful"

I don't play many games - mainly Resi Evil 4, Bioshock, Pro Evo, Fifa, Madden for the PS2 and Tomb Raider. None have freezed on me.

This is basic stuff, innit?

It's not a glitch, it's a feature! Because if someone ever really does beat Tiger, the world will end!

Look man I like EA ,always have. It is just the last two years franchise mode has had freezing issues. I buy about a lot of games every year and I haven't bought one other game that freezes on me. (ps2 or 3) I have owned every madden since it first came out and only the last two years of ps3 have crashes on me. I think I have bought about 15 ps3 games and only madden 08 and 09 have crashed. No one expects to buy a game and have it freeze. I am not pissed like I was last year. I am not calling EA crap or anyone else. But I am not jumping up and down when they fix THIS (freezing) issue, it is a must fix for any game developer.

I do think Ian was on the 09 team. I have read a ton of posts prior to the release of this game where he was tweaking the gamplay, using our input which is awesome. I think I even read you posting on one of them, I think he quoted you from another site. I thought he was the gameplay lead on 09? I could be wrong but that was my understanding. Ian is a great guy. I am not blaming him in any regards I think he is probably the best guy for us comminity guys on the team ever. I think 2010, if it doesn't crash, will by far be the best madden ever for franchise people.

Anyway, I agree with TJ now this post is so far off the topic of the patch that I am not going to responde to any thing but that topic any more.
Ian was working on what he called a "super secret project". He did carry our concerns to the gameplay team at times and made suggestions, but he was not actively involved in the 09 project.

so is the argument that someone has "wasted money again on a Madden game" or the "Madden stole my money" or the argument that you reference above.

Ok, this made me laugh. "forced into purchasing/renting the game"? What kind of marketing is EA using these days.

you know.. maybe its just time EA dumps Tiburon.

They do not seem to be up to the challenge of developing a next generation football game.

any update on this patch#2 release? (i knows its only been about a week)

kinda just skimmed by most of the posts...

& is it for sure comming out for 360 & PS3 @ the same time? cause thats not the case for the NCAA croud... PS3 got screwed with a longer wait...

outside of the franchise issues like progression & freezing, none of the other issues bothered me...

game looks great in HD... but this game makes me sad with the lack of fnished quality with gameplay/franchise...

just a few weeks ago i bought PS3 for madden (contemplated keeping my trusty ps2 around for another madden season before buying a ps3)

now i pay good $ for a new gen console & the games look better (no doubt) but have many more flaws compared to late gen consoles & thats not the impression developers will want to leave on thier customers...

in no way should ps2 still be more complete/finished game-wise then ps3...

im glad somethings getting done in the form of patches (this is normal for me comming from the PC croud), but the severity of some of these issues should have never made it this far into game release without being caught by development...

also... any update of when we will be seeing the final cut roster updates (hopefully next week)? or will this also be effected with timing from the patch#2 release?

nice to see development supporting thier game (as they should), lets just hope its equal for all consoles & not just the 360 first...
