Gameplay AND Graphics are BOTH important. I really don't understand the "either or" people. For instance, how could anyone enjoy "2017 era gameplay" with "2001 era graphics" or vice versa?

I've said many times that the Show is a game that looked sooo good on PS3, that when I first played it on PS4 back in 2015 I said, "Wow, not a big graphical jump...kinda just a transfer or rollover." And because the Show has taken the "incremental improvement" approach to graphics, 2016 on PS3 vs PS4 is NOT "night and day." Now, my perspective is a fresh one because I only upgraded to the PS4 a few months ago.

So count me among those who both look forward to continued gameplay improvements AND hope desperately that this game steps it up BIG TIME in the graphics department (and SOUND for that matter).

One of my biggest hopes for the gameplay is that perhaps the improved ball physics will make manual fielding truly fun again. IMO, MLB The Show 11 was the funnest game in the series for manual fielding.

But around 00:46:30, I saw a backspin line drive hit type that has never been featured in this game before. Outfield throws now have much more weight on them too. Makes me excited to see what else is in store!

EDIT: On the "meh" end, corner outfielders still hug the lines far too closely and they all play far too shallow in general. I know they'd have to literally change everything else about this game for that portion to be addressed, but at least different ball physics are in place!
Do you think if they fixed this it would allow those hits down lines into the corner to not be Bang Bang at second base most of the time?

This has been my argument as well. I was blown away at how good the show looked on the PS3. No other sports game looked as good, but that changed on the PS4. I've read people say "some have unrealistic expectations" and "the PS4 isn't that strong" but other sports games on the PS4 have sort of left Mlb the show behind graphically speaking. To me MLB the show is gameplay king, but I wish MLB would be better graphically. Some people like me care a lot about graphics. I have a 4k HDR tv and bought a pro because I'd like to experience my PlayStation games in the best possible way they can look. Also, by no means am I saying the graphics are bad at all. I'm just saying they could be better..

Here's hoping that "Grass Tech" will actually vastly improve the grass compared to what it looked like on this stream. Needs to look better on gameplay cam, not just on zoomed in replays.

This is my feelings exactly. A lot of people here will tell you the graphics are "good enough" and that gameplay is more important. And, while that's not wrong in any way, one could also say the gameplay is "good enough" already as well, but people still want big improvements in that area and no one bats an eye, which is great. Yet the people who mention they want big graphical jump are sometimes met with condescending remarks that graphics don't matter, which is a ridiculous statement since what matters is subjective from person to person.

From my perspective, the gameplay is great and has been great for years, and every year I hope for the graphics to get to that same level on current gen hardware (like they did on ps3) but it so far hasn't gotten to that level yet IMO.

Now I'm not going to judge The Show 17 until its in my hands, but this first stream has left me a little unsatisfied since the game to me looks almost identical to last year. I know they are going to add more graphical enhancements in the next month, but I've been watching the streams since they started 3 years ago, and early streams never really looked all that much different graphically from the finished product. So I can't say I feel incredibly optimistic that The Show 17 will have some huge graphical bump in the next two months. I would love to be proven wrong. If I was told that the improved player models and new grass tech were not in this build at all, I would probably be more optimistic about the graphics.

Fast Play was on.

Finally some more people coming out and speaking up about the graphics. I personally am talking about the player graphics specifically when I refer to graphics. Boxy shoulders, no variety in body types, no variety in uniforms (tight, baggy, shorter sleeves etc). Stadium graphics are good, so are the crowds. The players themselves lack that PS4 look. Who ever mentioned earlier and quoted me that Madden and NBA 2K player models are not better is absolutely wrong. Those two games are ahead of the Show player models by at least 3 years.

I guess only few will say the graphics are bad, they are still good. But on on PS 3 they were exceptional for the standards back then, and I guess this is what many ppl expect now, just one console generation further.

Seeing them having performance issued last year idk how much improvement we can really expect, first off maybe we should wish for a 100 percent stable framerate.

I have said it before but I'll repeat it, part of the problem imo is that all ps4 Shows are somewhat remastered hd versions of the ps3 Show. A game which was tailormade for the complicated cell structure of the ps3.

What if grass tech stands for Griffey Records Action Sequence (for play by play) Scripts?

I agree player models could have an update, I dont necessarily mind it as I would rather see the new ball physics then waving jerseys again to each their own and I hope those guys get what they want eventually as well.

One thing I don't get though is comparing between NBA's models and the shows, NBA has 12 guys on a team instead of a 25 man roster plus minors(yes not all minors as default rosters have many randomly generated) and the arenas are different but not to the extreme MLB stadiums can be. It seems like more time can be spent on NBA player models especially details. MLB players are always being introduced during the season as well which doesn't happen as much in the NBA either.

Again i agree for an update just don't see how that comparison can have much merit.

LOL.

Well, I don't really follow the American League so that is not a big deal to me but it is the closest AL team to me geographically.

Besides, I think, with their trading away of talent, being a White Sox fan may be punishment enough this coming season.

I'd have to agree here. Player models look way too boxy and "cutout" like, for lack of a better term. Its the next big thing this game needs to address.

I will say, that I can dig the new throw animations. There was a slicer down the left line, and the LF played it off the wall QUICK. This was something that hurt the game drastically in past iterations, no urgency. LOVE that it was apparently fixed, and the animation transition looked fantastic, so my hats off to SDS for that.

Lol right. Or Great Replay Angle Shot Selection.

I actually was thinking it'll only refer to how the grass reacts when the ball lands/rolls on it. Which, who cares about that if it looks 2D, low-res and gaudy from every gameplay angle.

  • We are in crunch, it's not easy to pull people away from their day-to-day to do these streams
  • Bunting, we didn't realize until after the stream, but we had fastballs down the middle on. So yeah bunting is way easier with every fastball down the middle. Anyway it's been worked on a lot you'll see more Wednesday. And that's the beauty of streaming an unfinished game, we worked on it a lot then streamed and found something else to tune which you'll see on Wednesday.
  • Graphics, WIP same as every year look at the first stream or vlog from any year then reference it with the last one.
  • Graphics............13th.............:-)
Ramone, I know what you're saying about throwing fastballs down to the middle during the stream but if I have a 3-2 count to Contreas(who has a 32 bunt rating) and want to throw him a fastball, how can a batter like that just lay down a perfect bunt down the 3rd base line?

What a find breakfastcat!!!

Whatever that is, if it makes playing out a 162 game season better than just simming the games, I'm all on board!

This has been my biggest complaint for years. The pacing was completely ruined when they started forcing skips of the batter's box presentations.

At-Bats are just completely rushed along at breakneck speed, and don't represent the sport at all. I find myself constantly calling for time-outs which isn't realistic, and is an immersion killer.

I thought with the introduction of Fast-Play and Quick Counts, we would be given back the option to play at a normal pace, but the devs only seem to want to introduce options that speed the game up, and have been moving away from a realistic presentation experience every year.
