MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Thanks, I'm not looking to pick a internet fight with someone over a video game. I'm just expressing my disappointment that another year goes but and The Show hasn't switched things up. With MVP Baseball apparently never coming back this is basically all we have... and it seems like they are not willing to mess with the formula. The games looked basically the same as it has for the last 5+ years with just a few extra animations thrown in.

A fleshed out RTTS is what I've been waiting for.

The graphics engine wasn't a huge deal to me as it is for some of you, but I do agree that it is antiquated and they need something new.

Really no different than people being 100% positive and excited about a game based on a one minute trailer.

I agree with this somewhat, the look hasn't changed much but it doesn't look like a PS3 game as some people like to say. Personally I don't mind it as long as they get rid of the annoying animations that hinder the game (i.e, the wall suction animation and INF not charging when necessary.)

How will a retro mode bring in younger fans? That doesn't even make sense.

If anything it would be to capture some of the older audience they may be on the cusp of losing.

I'm almost positive equipment isn't final yet (it wasn't in last year's trialer) but as of now looks like the only addition is New Balance so far, from what I could tell.

Doesn't really look like it was. I paused and examined every scene and NB was the only addition I could find.

I think Lonnie Chisenhall does.

A very good point. A retro mode would be designed to awaken one's sense of nostalgia, and the younger fans are less likely to have experience with 16-bit baseball.

Retro mode is absolutely for us 30-somethings and 90s kids.

It's also an arcade mode, which simplifies the game for those casual baseball fans or fans of arcade action. That being said, if you are a casual baseball fan, RBI Baseball will be cheaper. If you aren't interested in sim baseball, why would you spend $60 on a sim baseball game only for its arcade mode?

Perhaps, then, it acts like a gateway. I've been playing arcade/retro mode and learned the rules and got the hang of it, and I have the sim part right here. Might as well go to the next level.

Other than that, the retro mode seems like it's for fans of sim baseball who are otherwise nostalgic.

You must have some amazing psychic abilities to tell that from just a 1 min trailer of a pre-beta build.

He should at least wait for a fact sheet or a developer stream to blackpill himself.

Lower level minor league guys do usually.

Hey guys, if he's seen enough to know he doesn't want the game then that's fine. It's his prerogative. No need to harp on it. Move on.

Yeah, I cant understand why shoulderpads, cheerleaders or at least the occasional Zamboni hasnt been added.
Probably because none of those things have to do with baseball

Few thoughts on the trailer:

I'm curious of this showcast thing.

Bad baserunner note: the hitter on deck (Arrieta) should be near home plate advising Heyward where to slide.

Wonder what other equipment will be available besides New Balance?

I do wish they'd clean up some the follow-thrus - as a an example, look how far down Griffey's front shoulder dips in his swing (:53 second mark) and the normal follow-thrus seem a bit too rushed.

This is what I'm talking about:

Spoiler

Really? This isn't gonna fly. A smart *** rebuttal is not gonna be tolerated. He has his opinion and you have yours.

This is your, and everyone else's final warning.

I'm a Franchise mode guy and miss the features removed after MLB 12. Plus, Madden, NHL, and NBA 2K ended up putting a lot of "Owner" control features into the game, so I am hoping the MLB guys reverse course on the stripped down Franchise mode feature set. Unfortunately, I did not see anything in the trailer that game me much hope they are putting the missing features back.

Yeah, in last year's trailer player equipment changed from then to release. But if you mean them getting the rights to Adidas equipment between now and release, I really doubt it, but it could happen I guess.
