MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

I guess you're not the only one whose eyes aren't as good as they use to be because I think the player models and graphics look good.

The player models are looking a bit dated at this point IMO. There are only a few different types, eyes have this weird zombie-like look under certain lighting conditions, and the "fat" models still look like the jersey is stretched over their skin, a'la the PS3 days. If you look at someone like Sergio Romo, who has a fairly unique body type in real life, The Show's version really looks nothing like him.

Still, I consider these things to be fairly minor in the grand scheme of things. The Show never disappoints and if we don't get new models this year, I'm sure it's still going to be an awesome game.

Because in a pre-build, they're probably not using PBR (Physically Base Rendering) from what we had in 16 until closer to final.

Hoping to hear more so I can continue my save file into 17. Now, back to my MLB 16 season..

I do as well. I'm hopeful that with the pro, the game will be a stable 60FPS and that includes cut scenes.

If they can implement HDR the proper way along with a 4K resolution, my body is ready. I'm drooling at the thought of the show in 4K HDR on my Samsung 8500.

I think it's way to early to judge 17 this early based on the usual 1 minute teaser we get around this time every year. However I have to admit based off of this teaser I honestly thought I was watching MLB The Show 14, 15 or 16. The graphics seem to be stuck in quicksand as in they are not progressing as fast as we all would like it to. And what makes this teaser even harder to watch is the fact that some of us now have the more powerful PS4 Pro and if that is pretty close to what it will look like on the Pro then that is going to be very disappointing. I am confident the gameplay, ball Physics and so on will see some nice improvements as they seem to do with every new version. But until I see other wise I expect the graphics to once again take a back seat to everything else and once again have that Late PS3, early PS4 type of look if you know what I mean. Maybe it is true and we will not see that "next gen" graphical look until PS5. Having said all that I am as always still really excited and looking forward to 17 because even though it may basically look like the same game year after year I know the gameplay will better and more new animations that at least make the game look more realistic in motion.

Still don't think this is the yr we get create a stadium (believe we won't get this til PS5)
With old Yankee Stadium in hopefully we get more retro Stadiums like
Metrodome, Olympic Stadium and others and hopefully more realistic looking minor league stadiums.
Not concerned with graphics yet as long as they fix ball physics, make wind realistic again and fix things like base running, and 1st and 3rd baseman not fielding balls correctly when it's hit right at them, and more balls hit down the line

The only new retro stadiums we'll probably get is Metrodome, Yankee Stadium II, Sun Life Stadium and Shea Stadium since those were in last gen. Even possibly Turner Field.

Excited to see old Yankee Stadium returning. Would love to see them add the stadium it's original form as well. Pre 1970s renovations. Also glad we finally hand New Balance cleats.

Some of you have made comments that you think the ball Physics looked improved. I honestly have no idea how you can see that in this teaser trailer? I mean I am confident that the ball Physics will be improved in 17 but I really see no evidence of that yet in this teaser.

The only thing for sure I got out of this teaser is there will be a lot of new player celebrations.

Does anyone else think this player model looks different than the ones that have been in the game for years and are throughout the rest of the trailer?

Maybe I'm looking too far into things, but the way the jersey hangs off the players back doesn't look like anything I've seen with the current models. Maybe it's possible that there are new player models or updated cloth physics and the game is still at such an early point in development that they decided to go with the old models for this first trailer, other than this scene which may have been added later than everything else. Anyone else see what I'm talking about, or should I take off my tin foil hat?

Have you ever seen the ball slice off a ground bounce like it does at :20? Look at where it hits in front of the plate versus where it ends up heading to as it bounces toward the camera - slicing away from the baseline. I'm pretty sure I haven't seen that kind of movement before in this series.

Mid air slices/hooks have existed for a long time, but once the ball hit the ground it usually lost its spin and straightened out. This kind of ground ball movement is what can cause baseline hits to spin into outfield side walls (and away from fielders), resulting in more unpredicability and extra base hits.

I see what you mean but I honestly can not say if I have ever seen that in 16 or not. But I will definitely take your word for it and hope you are right

So yeah, what jumps out to me immediately was the bouncing ball curling down the line (hooking) off the left handed batter that had the right ball physics!! Tell me I was seeing that correctly!?

I agree dude, I really hated the part of the trailer where they showed online franchise with the same lack of features.

Glad to see Junior's correct stance will finally be in the game!

Totally agree with the guys above. While Retro seems like a cool idea, why not work on glaring issues that SCEA has with online play and online leagues/franchise

The trailer was ok. I'm not going to judge the graphics yet since we are in December. Not a fan of RTTS or the new Retro mode but am happy for those who are. My main thing is to see what they have improved in Franchise mode. Also want to see what they are going to do with the PS4 Pro version.
