MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

That pretty much sums up my thoughts.

Retro Mode would be worth it if you had the option to use it in Online Play or Franchise mode. It would nice to maybe play 10 regular franchise games and then mix in a retro just to switch it up. But the way I'm reading it, it seems it's only an exhibition mode that can be played locally. And honestly, who is gonna use that more than 2 or 3 times? I just hope the defense and absolutely terrible non working throwing meter is fixed.

With all the eye candy coming from the ps4 pro, I expected more. Not mad just a little disappointed. I hope I'm wrong

Russell does a fantastic job of promoting this game and selling new features.

I'd like to see them fix game play in manage mode this year. I'm not expecting it but it would be a pleasant surprise.

Those 2 games at times look photo realistic where this game does not. So with game play being almost perfect if graphics are not going to be improved then what is there really left to do to make this game any better?
This is my view completely. I love this game but there are two areas that need to be addressed IMO - player faces/personalities/models, which you mention and franchise mode which is obviously not something they will tease in a trailer like this anyway.

I could look past player models and other stuff if they improve fielder movement so it doesn't feel so jerky "maybe that's just me?", improve more on franchise mode, and improve ball physics and eliminate alot of the dribbles in front of home plate and foul outs. I'm not very picky because for the most part the game is great.
Also, make RTTS more difficult, and your player grind more for improvement points instead of being mlb ready in only a year or so. Maybe after a calendar week, or month, your production is looked at and your allotted a certain amount of improvement points? Maybe not make it a high amount either.
I'm no expert, just my two cents..

Very disappointed. No improvement in graphics or body types whatsoever.

Honestly who gives a crap about some retro mode? SCEA, you're getting truly boring! Big fan of the game but It's getting pathetic! No real innovation, nothing! U could have used the budget for that piss-poor of an excuse for an addition, retro mode for creating a team, relocate a team, or create a ballpark. Every year you talk about what made it and didn't make the ''cut list'' and u mean to tell me retro mode made it in over things that we actually ''want'' in the game? The trailer actually looks like every other trailer, The player models haven't changed since '10 or beyond, and honestly, stop saying crap about ''the lighting''! Every year, ''the lighting looks amazing'' is said about 500 times by you all. SO WHAT! Make a 3B be able to actually play defense, stop having my pitcher sac bunt into 5-4-3s or 3-6-4s, stop having the CPU execute hit and runs above a 90% rate, stop making me burn thru my pitchers b/c you all cant get stamina no way close to being right, stop having the CPU batter foul off 12-15 pithes JUST to get my pitch count higher, and for goodness sake-------DO SOMETHING WITH THE CAMERA ANGLE VS LEFTIES FOR PLAYERS WHO LIKE TO PLAY FROM THE ''OUTFIELD'' VIEW OR BEHIND THE PITCHER'S VIEW A LA WATCHING A GAME ON TELEVISION. But you all decided a retro mode should make the put in '17 list! SMH WTH

These overreactions to a one minute trailer are truly becoming comical at this point.

And to answer the question posed above...I give a "crap" about Retro Mode. Looking forward to playing it.

It was a matter of time before all the trash came rolling down the hill.

Nothing of substance for a franchise guy like myself.

We didn't get any franchise info this time last year when The Show 16 trailer was released. Wait and see what's new in the next couple of months.

Haha you're a total troll. Your post is completely worthless. I posted it twice because I realized that this one is the one with all the traffic. I didn't know you work for them

What overreactions? The game looks 100% the same as the last two years with the addition of Griifey. You want me to worship the game that hasn't made any visual improvement in a few years??

Me neither. I haven't seen a single cent

Will skip it this year...super disappointed that the game will look the same and super outdated again.

Not going to spend money on maybe more stats, some gameplay tweaks and retro mode that will be funny for 10 seconds.

I'm a bit baffled though and not trying to be negative...but back on ps3 I was always amazed about the amount of changes and improvements the Show made from year to year...but on PS4 the addition from one edition to the next has been very minor...

Holding out to next year

To me, maybe the only thing more disappointing than the strong knee-jerk reactions to 1 minute of video is the barrage of posters that feel the need to discredit any negative opinion at all. No need to make this into a Jets vs Sharks thing. Everyone can have their own take?

As for me..

+StatCast baserunning/fielding may have been integrated to some degree (top speed, 2nd-to-home time, route efficiency)
+NB cleats
+Ball physics implied to have balls hook into the corner on grounders down the line or curl the opposite way (fade/hook)

-Graphically about the same (both player models and grass)
