MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Looks ok. I like the retro mode addition. If there are once again only incremental improvements on the core game, I'm sure I'll be playing retro mode a lot.

Was really hoping for new or updated player models. It looked like Lindor's face didn't change from last year. It was so bad. Hope maybe they just haven't gotten all the faces in.

I'm sure I'll buy this game regardless. And it's a good game at its core. Hopefully there will be many more improvements to be announced.

The extremes people will go to, to justify their opinion of a video game. I'll never stop being amazed.

These graphics are no longer acceptable considering what 2K delivers, I mean half of the players in The Show don't even resemble their real selves.

haha, ban ppl for having an opinion that change is needed? 1 min trailer told me all I needed to know, just another year of tweaks. I'll turn my attention to see what Super Mega Baseball has for us this year, they seem to have a "new" game this year.

Ok.

Hope Super Mega Baseball has what you're looking for.

I know it's only December and there's 3 months get till they release the game but I was expecting something way different graphically specially since Sony no longer making the game for PS3. Still hoping for those major changes I was hoping for, I really hope they put in the renovations and LED signs for Yankee Stadium.

Overall, a great trailer.

Those who were expecting an overhaul in the graphics department are going to be very disappointed. I would expect some additional improvements with PBR and so on, but I doubt the basic look of the game will drastically change between now and March.

However, if the frame rate, including judder, is improved, it will be a win in my book. PS4 Pro can make this happen. On PS4 Pro, I cannot fathom how anything other than 60 FPS can be tolerated. This is a first party game and they really need to hit PS4 Pro performance out of the park. Pro support so far has been hit and miss as it is.

Having said that, it looks like they are adding a lot of much-needed personality to the game. The more superfluous animations the better. Teammates pal around and look like they are having fun playing. Great stuff.

I doubt there will be a huge story in RTTS, but fleshing out those interactions with cut scenes and locker room situations is promising. I hardly played RTTS in 16.

When it comes to new features, the narrative by SDS has always been about priorities and resources. With that in mind, I hope retro mode wasn't too time consuming in terms of resources and didn't take away from other improvements this game needs. This mode is not something I see myself playing extensively unless they tie some rewards to it.

So for me, if the game has loads of personality and runs well, I'm happy.

BTW did anyone else notice that when Junior was walking up to the plate, he was 19 years of age? Wonder if there are different versions of Junior in the game.

So the only brand missing now is Adidas, right? Would be cool if they get it in but I won't be disappointed if they don't.

I would fully expect 3 Juniors. A Rookie version, Prime, and when he was with the Reds.

Yes, it will be. This is already getting old.

I was excited about the griffey announcement and the ps3 no longer being supported. But this trailer was hard to watch. It feels very outdated with the same player models continuing to be used.

The 3 areas that would help bring a complete experience to this series is improved commentary approach, player models, and crowd sound presentation.

# 80 underdog13 @ 12/03/16 06:36 PM
One think I'm worried about is hopefully the Rookie Version of Griffey doesn't have the stats that were shown in the retro mode. Hopefully that is the Prime Griffey.

While seems like a small concern, this past year was probably the worst and most inconsistent in terms of player attributes that I've seen in a sports game, and that prevented me from really enjoying Diamond Dynasty.
