MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Always hard to tell much from these sort of trailers for sports games, you could probably whip that up using 16 and I'd struggle to tell the difference. The only real thing there is the "retro mode" which might interest some people, but I'm not one of them. Cool to see Griffey, but not a whole lot of info on what Griffey being on it actually means? (just another legend in DD?)

Looking forward to more being revealed about other game modes though and maybe some actual gameplay footage instead of the cinematic replay stuff

That has been a pet peeve of mine with the game for a while.
im surprised you didnt know new hair styles were coming since just shortly after the release of '16 Russell made a post for what kind of hair styles would people want to see?

My thoughts

Loved the attitude/ 90s feel of the trailer, those team celebrations looked great.

Those base hits passed the bag looked to be a shout out to OS on making those turn more into doubles.

The enhanced rtts interaction at the beginning looked amazing. The #1 thing I'm looking forward too. Honestly was a bit upset about the lack additions to rtts and franchise the past year so I'm glad they are doing something big and hopefully more "sim" with rtts.

The voice over by in the rtts clip gives me the impression based on his tone that rtts will be harder this year to improve your guy, but maybe that's too much analysis.

I liked the OSD's color palette. The overlay showing Heyward's top speed is something i would usually only expect to see in NBA 2k.

They showed monument park which possibly implies we will get a big Yankee star for yesteryear in the game. Mantle, Gehrig, Ruth, etc.

The faces looked really good on the players. I could easily tell who everyone was.

Anyway those were my thoughts.

Gonna hold out hope that the grass finally gets addressed in the final build this year. It's been an eyesore for years, especially compared to other textures.

Retro mode looks suspiciously like RBI Baseball lol.

Here is an interesting thought. What if they also got the rights to Ken Griffey Sr.? I know he wasn't nearly as good, but he carved out a pretty cool career in the majors. Would be fun to play with both of them.

They used the Orioles roster for the Erie Seawolves in the RTTS clip....

Just noticed the Show track info on the Jason Heyward clip showing running speed and time to Home Plate along with a trace line showing his running path. Maybe this will also lead to more in depth commentary about events in the game?

I'd like to think they now have rights to minor league players, but in the clip you're talking about I only saw Wade Miley who was a major league player. I doubt they have full minor league player licenses

I feel like the retro mode will have classic teams. In the clip, Goose Gossage is pitching.

Goose Gossage was in mlb 15, same with Jackie Robinson as someone else mentioned

I'm really hoping for classic teams. I feel that would be an awesome addition. Being able to play with some of the all-time greatest teams. I am weary they do not have the rights to every player on those teams so I'm a little skeptical but would absolutely love it

Retro mode sounds like a gimmick and graphically this game has been lacking all gen and from the little we saw of this it looks like that is going to be true again. Graphically this gen has been a big disappointment for the show. I guess we are going to have to wait for ps5 to have a big graphic upgrade.

Retro mode seems like a good way to bring in younger fans and a more casual audience. Especially with the increase in baseball popularity after the world series.

Two things,

I buy this every year and mostly play RTTS. That little bit at the beginning has me slightly excited.

Two, the graphics are still the same reskinned guys. Will there be a roster update for next year for THIS year's version of the game?
