MLB The Show 17 News Post

Check out new MLB The Show 17 trailer and make sure you check out Retro Mode at the end of it. Post your thoughts!

UPDATE: Retro Mode details revealed.

During the World Series, we revealed that newly inducted Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. will grace the cover of MLB The Show 17. The Kid’s signature style transcended the baseball diamond and helped create some of the most memorable baseball video games of the 90’s. Most of us at San Diego Studio grew up playing those classics and wondered how we could recreate a nostalgic feeling for a generation of gamers.

To answer the most obvious question: nope, your eyes did not deceive you. At the very end of our PlayStation Experience trailer you caught a first look at a new game mode for The Show 17.

Introducing “Retro Mode,” a retro gameplay experience that pays homage to the classic baseball games many of us grew up playing. Retro Mode allows you to move the pitcher across the pitcher’s rubber and move around the batter’s box with ease, classic on-screen displays, an old school soundtrack, unique sound effects, a throwback pause menu and more.

Retro Mode is entirely separate to the popular Road To The Show, Diamond Dynasty and Franchise game modes. This new way to play MLB The Show is designed to be a fun, throwback game mode that instigates battles on the couch with friends. We’re not diving deep into those modes just yet, but there are a few teases about the changes coming to RTTS, gameplay additions and a couple of other things we snuck into the trailer for our eager fans. Some changes are more obvious than others and we’ll take a deeper look very soon in case the untrained eye missed a clue (I’m guessing our biggest fans will find most of them by the end of the weekend).

We’ve only scratched the surface on the feature set for MLB The Show 17, so stay tuned for info in the coming weeks. And if you’re at PlayStation Experience over the weekend be sure to come by the MLB The Show bar and try out an Alpha build of Retro Mode.

Are you asking if there will be an official sds roster update for mlb 16 next april? The answer would be no, but there will be people uploading custom updated rosters.

I meant if people making rosters would make updated rosters in 17 for 2016, as you said. You answered my question, sorry about making it confusing. I didn't know if people kept previous version of the game current.

With the answer being yes, I MIGHT just keep playing 2016. However, we all know how strong the urge is when a new version drops

Two, the graphics are still the same reskinned guys. Will there be a roster update for next year for THIS year's version of the game?
One thing to consider, one thing missing from the gamestrailer trailer, is the "pre-beta footage" disclaimer that's at the beginning of the official, SDS released trailer.

I understand, but I expected the graphics to be the same to be honest, with how video game companies are milking customers these days. If they do change the graphics prior to launch, I will be pleasantly surprised.

If I recall correctly last year they changed drastically right before launch. I though won't expect the same thing this year though.

Did the 2016 version look drastically different from the trailer released in late 2015 (if there was one)

I don't know, I am asking, not trying to be confrontational.

I was disappointed with MLB The Show 15 (actually much preferred MLB The Show 12 which I still play), so I skipped this past years... and yes, I know it's only December but this looks like just another rehash. The Show is long overdue to a graphic overhaul, it has looked the same forever and time has caught up to it a couple years ago.

They can still use the same rosters though. Just saying I wouldn't expect fully historical teams. Probably another 30 legends which would put the total at 90 I believe.

I'm guessing Retro Mode will just be another form of a quick play or exhibition

This looks cool and all, but my GOODNESS!! It is LONG past time for them ditch this graphics engine and move into the true next gen era. Just tacking onto an antiquated system is not what I was hoping for. I do hope that these last couple of games have been fillers and they are working on a "brand new" game, but with all the cuts they've been making, this may not be.

This is what happens when there is no competition.

I'm a little surprised MLB (more specifically, MLB Advanced Media) was okay with MLBTS adopting the retro angle since they're the ones that develop the new RBI.

Game will be a day one buy as usual. I'm digging the new ball physics they're obviously trying to tease as well as a Statcast (Showcast)?.

Yep thats what I think.

From a programming perspective I'm interested in how the game engine will handle pitches that break down. As if I recall retro games usually had only fastball, changeup, pitch that breaks right, pitch that break left.

If this is what happens from no competition then keep it up I say.

I think retro mode is in one part a dig at the new RBI game and a homage to 90s Griffey baseball.
