NBA 2K17 News Post

Innovation. Authenticity. Engagement.

These are the three tenets that the franchise team has been working under for the last couple of years, and it has produced some truly unique content. We have another feature set this year that will both challenge the norm and continue to drive this portion of the sports gaming industry.

The people I am fortunate enough to work with on the MyGM/MyLEAGUE team are of a different ilk. Intense…is the word I would use to describe them. To Dave Z, Tim, Brad, Barry, Leftos, Yu, and Kefei, I salute you. For everyone else out there, let’s go learn what these fine folks have created for you this year!

I’m going to write this blog a little differently than I have in the past. We covered a lot of ground this year. I want to make sure you can understand the breadth of our scope this year, so I am going to write this in more of a list format so you can quickly consume what we have been up to. Without much further ado…

Yes! This is one of the main reasons I want the have the DLeague or even Europe. Young players sit in free agency too long and they just retire. Those guys should be in the NBDL or Europe. At least some of them. Even if we can't play it. Just have them somewhere. Look at the career arc of guys like Whiteside. They aren't the norm but seeing guys retire at 26 years old isn't either. Plus those player models look so much better than the CPU generated players.

I haven't been following 2k17 that closely so I'm sorry if this question has been asked already. Can we edit created players tattoos in MyLeague/MyGM?

Sure, he'll progress and regress over a career (and I know the team, including you personally with the training overhaul, has done great work here recently), but you know what you have. And as nice as the total-control player training is, I wonder if it's a little too much control at times; it'd sure be nice to improve Ricky Rubio's shooting or a lot of players' defensive chops, but the NBA doesn't always work that way. Current development also doesn't allow for large swings in a rating over the course of a single season, as we've seen with guys like Boogie and Anthony Davis stretching their range.

Ben Simmons is a 79 in the game, never mind that he might start playing and turn out to be much better than that (like Towns last year). There are also plenty of players currently barely fit to be on a roster who will turn out to be key role players at season's end (maybe they finally acquired the defensive IQ to stay on the court, or developed a 3 point shot), and solid veterans who will regress so quickly their careers appear to be over.

This is the biggest thing that makes this excellent franchise mode get staler quicker than I'd like, and the D-League is a good representation of how to innovate and get it 'right'. It doesn't have to be an actual D-League simulation per se, just like we don't need a proper Euroleague simulation to provide the same level of depth with draft-and-stash. A more dynamic ratings system (optional of course, so that guys don't get cranky when their prized prospect or key role player turns out to be much worse than advertised) would finally give value to second round picks and end of the bench signings, as well as creating the ever-elusive 'draft bust'. Drafting a player in the top 5 and immediately knowing he is a 67 (and simply cutting/trading him) is not the same as wasting years on him only to never realize his potential.
I actually create my own sort of randomization in my MyLeague game saves.

Each season at the start, I use Siri to give me three random numbers between 1 - 30. I then scroll through the teams starting alphabetically with the 76ers and stop at the team number corresponding to my random numbers. Then I take the youngest player with potential below A- on each team and add 3 points to his potential.

That lets me spice it up a little for CPU teams, who as a rule don't do a great job developing players. I exclude the team I control from this, so my Knicks never get that bump. Since as a user I tend to draft and develop players better than the CPU, this at least gives the league a little more competition.

I don't really see it overall increasing the league's overall talent level because it's a small bump and a lot of these guys still don't fully achieve their potential due to injuries, inferior coaching, inferior trainers and such. Or some just have weaker peak start and peak end curves.

On the other hand, if a recent lottery pick goes from B+ to A- potential in this process, it kind of simulates the KAT scenario and gives that weaker team a guy to really build around. It can also have the effect of turning a late first or early second rounder from being roster fill to a useful role player in his career, going from C+ to B- potential.

@leftos

I'm not sure of you mentioned it but this blog had no information on contraction and how it works or anything like that. What is the minimum number of teams that you can have in your league? What does contraction mean? Does that mean that I can remove any team from my league? Can I have a 24 team league? Can I only contract expansion teams?

What happens to the players of teams that get contracted? Do they disappear? Do they become free agents? What happens?

Care to provide some details?

Wow.

One question. I have not played MyLeagueOnline in the past. If myself and 1 other person want to start one can we play it with 28 CPU controlled teams?

@leftos @dave I might be alone on this. But can we get tattoos back in on created players and draft classes. The nba has so many players now with tattoos and giving that option to add when editing draft classes adds to the overall personality of your myleague/mygm. It mirrors the actual nba which is being filled up with tattooed players. If it can be added in my player i dont see why thoae same tats and some other onea cant be added to created draft classes. Seems pretty simple to add. Otherwise the game looks amazing guys. But the small details count.

This blog is incredible, I live franchise modes and this is by far the best it's ever been. The fact that it keeps getting deeper every year is quite shocking. This is the stuff that gets me hype

That goes along with the lack of attention to CAP player faces and hair and models for multi-year MyGM/MyLeague players.

So the focused this year on other things. I appreciate the changes. I'm also frankly disappointed they didn't touch these other elements that are really genuine quality and engagement issues for people who play these modes for more than a couple of seasons.

"Engagement" was one of their three strategic goals for these modes this year, but they missed this stuff this time around.

I'm less enthusiastic about the game this year for this reason, I can't lie. Maybe once I get into it I will feel differently.
Revisiting my previous post to add some things that I hope will be addressed someday when it comes to generated draft classes.

Some generated players are assigned jump shooting forms that do not represent modern basketball, such as throw back set shots and high school shots. That shouldn't happen.

So the logic under the hood that creates these players needs an overhaul that includes tendencies, hot zones and signature shooting styles to fit the positional and attribute archetype profile of the player, with some appropriate variation and the occasional oddball.

Another thing I forgot to mention about tendencies is how highly talented offensive players by attribute/badge combos occasionally have a low number for their position for touches and taking shots. So their offensive production doesn't fit their talent at all.

Ideally, shot tendencies could be adjusted by the CPU "coach" each season or dynamically through the season to reflect the plan for who gets the highest utilization based on talent.

Since these generated draft class issues weren't addressed this year as far as anyone has said, people who play several seasons will have to make a lot of edits again to draft classes if they want the league to play appropriately and be more or less #simnation. Either that or they have to make/download hand made classes with all these many properties put together. That ends up being a lot of work for me every year.

Can we please get a MyLeague Online that works like MyLeague offline???? The keeper stuff is okay but I really want a regular draft and free agency.

It all sounds great. I especially like the pick swap and pick protection something I've been wanting for a while. The dev team really puts in work to create an authentic franchise mode for pro basketball. MLO seems to be a tricky mode to flesh out and stabilize especially given the short development cycle.

Some things I wished it touched on:
Draft class attributes and tendencies
Sim engine stats and results
Team building logic

It does go over offseason trading logic so that's good. I feel that those three things though are the foundation of MyLeague/MyGM and even MyPlayer. Seeing teams loading up at a position, wonky sim stats/results and rookies not playing to their potential because of tendencies makes the mode lose luster. I'm glad these modes still gets this much attention especially since they don't offer supplementary income for 2k like myplayer, myteam and pro-am.

2 more questions.

1. Can we edit the age again of legendary players ? It was for some odd reason disabled last year.

2. We talked about it last year after release in a topic about making it possible to use the option to keep a player from retiring more then just once, so i hope that made it in that we can now like keep a player from retiring twice or maybe even 3 times would be better, 3 times the charm right.

They mentioned in MLO being able to manually pull players out of retirement. But nothing specific for offline. But I really can't imagine something like that being online but not offline.
