NBA 2K17 News Post

Innovation. Authenticity. Engagement.

These are the three tenets that the franchise team has been working under for the last couple of years, and it has produced some truly unique content. We have another feature set this year that will both challenge the norm and continue to drive this portion of the sports gaming industry.

The people I am fortunate enough to work with on the MyGM/MyLEAGUE team are of a different ilk. Intense…is the word I would use to describe them. To Dave Z, Tim, Brad, Barry, Leftos, Yu, and Kefei, I salute you. For everyone else out there, let’s go learn what these fine folks have created for you this year!

I’m going to write this blog a little differently than I have in the past. We covered a lot of ground this year. I want to make sure you can understand the breadth of our scope this year, so I am going to write this in more of a list format so you can quickly consume what we have been up to. Without much further ado…

D-League went the way of the dodo mostly as a matter of ROI. Too much work to maintain and get working relatively right for minuscule returns. As part of trying to make Franchise as realistic as possible we'd want to have some of the features and benefits users would expect from D-League back, without actually having to implement the whole thing as a league, which I just don't see happening if we're going to keep innovating and doing so much stuff in a year as we've been doing now.

So, that's not to say D-League will never be back in full effect. But I'll say this as an NBA 2K gamer as much as a developer, if you want to see it return in some form or fashion, you're better off thinking outside the box, not as an all-or-nothing proposition. What are the things D-League would give you as a feature that you'd like to see implemented, even if there's not every D-League team there and a full separate league simulation?

Some things that did not make it that I had really hoped to find:
  • D League (even if only "text" style or simcast playable)
  • Draft & stash options for player development, in Europe or D league
  • Improved or even market intelligent free agent asking prices and negotiation postures. In other words, free agents are aware of the market and competition at their positions, and don't just set their asking prices based on the current combination of age, overall and potential. This goes along with players being willing to sign for minimum, which in past 2k's, most players who should be willing won't do it.
  • Sign & trade
I'm not complaining. I like all that they did, though the stat sorting options are not as much my thing as they probably are for others.

I love the focus on improved CPU AI for team management for trading and free agent targeting/roster composition. Also love the advanced rotations, league expansion options and rebranding community shares.
Good ideas: I'll help you push those for next year.

Dear Simballer, Leftos and Davez,

Huge THANK YOU guys, sincerely gratefull and fortunate to have you all working as much on this, our virtual utopy called myleague ... A few questions tho:

1. Do playbooks get also updated as Ace, uniforms and courts in our ongoing myleague/mygm modes ?

2. Can we edit the starting chemestry value for each team at any point, like within the roster creator and from the my league file ? Sometimes, default values are not accurate enough or dont translate well in regards of team records in our ongoing myleagues.

3. Can we edit the team AI stances for Trading, FA and Draft at any point ? I mean, sometimes the game would consider a team in rebuilding mode as opposed to a playoffs contender or a championship caliber team, or a buying or selling team ... therefore affecting its decissions on what to look on the draft, whom to trade away or for, who to sign, etc. We need to alter this at any point during the league.

4. Do we have an expanded amount of untouchables, last year we had a max of 6, can we at least have 30 ? Just couldnt stand to see some youngs get propposed in deals even if they got nuled by me.

5. Can we now edit the names of the staffs and in sum, edit with as much extend as we can with players ?

6. Can we have more of a say on the rankings of teams, I mean, on years past it seemed as if the teams ranks in offense and defense were hardcoded to a point, as no matter how much you altered the players, the rotations and the coaches grades, sometimes you couldnt make them be within a wanted number, can you now ?

7. Can we edit hotspots as well as hotzones ?

8. Are you planning (for 2K18) on applying the same upgrade done for attributes (spreadsheet format like) to the tendencies ?

9. Can we do rebrand of the entire league from roster editor and share it with others as a roster file or cant we as is just withing our myleague files ? Maybe have myleague files shareable for 18 ?

10. Can we alter/edit the deafult rivals each team may have, be it roster creator or myleague ?

**. Do you guys ever rest and dedicate a few weeks to fully playing and enjoying the whole package, I mean, do you get time to play and enjoy NBA 2K games after so much work ?

Finally, if something within these questions are not in the game, could you please at least consider adding them for next year ... the more customization/editing, the better.

Everything about this blog is crazy. These guys went above and beyond on this; I don't even know where to begin. Nearly every request I personally have had has been included (except D-League);
1. Start Today - been asking for this for years
2. Dynamic Uniform Updates - I used have to wait till Christmas before starting any rosters just to make sure all uniforms were available in franchise
3. Staff Editing - This affects team ratings as much as player ratings do; big addition
4. Hot Zone customization - glad this is back
5. The improved roster editing and ability to edit draft classes during your franchise is BIG for people who edit rosters.
So many other nice improvements. Start in offseason, CAP and trade rules that mirror the NBA...crazy. Much respect to Erick and the rest of the Devs for this.

I'd just take the ability to have 3-5 players in some sort of minor league system where you could have them work on specific areas to improve. Basically similar to an NFL Practice Squad or a glorified sim training area. Guys go in, select what you want them to improve, your "NBDL Coach" works with them on it. The NBDL coach could have attributes as well.

You could even implement some sort of restriction, like total NBA years played, so people wouldn't abuse it by putting Ray Allen or Steve Nash down there and treat it as some sort of AAA roster.

Holy mother of God.

How on God's green earth can I pass this years iteration up? How? It's just not possible.

I AM BLOWN AWAY.

Yeap, something like what AAA teams are for the Big League teams, like a farm were you can place young draftees or FAs to polish their game and get experience, from were to try and do signs or call ups when trade happens and injuries strike ... we would need to have some sort of stat tracking tho, to show us how and if they are improving.

It looks like, from the questions answered and those skipped over, that the logic underlying draft class creation was untouched. So we'll still see the same lack of logic around putting attributes, tendencies and hot zones together for CPU generated draft classes.

That goes along with the lack of attention to CAP player faces and hair and models for multi-year MyGM/MyLeague players.

So the focused this year on other things. I appreciate the changes. I'm also frankly disappointed they didn't touch these other elements that are really genuine quality and engagement issues for people who play these modes for more than a couple of seasons.

"Engagement" was one of their three strategic goals for these modes this year, but they missed this stuff this time around.

I'm less enthusiastic about the game this year for this reason, I can't lie. Maybe once I get into it I will feel differently.

Yea Lorenzo, but thank god for the draft classes people make for years.

The dev team did alot of work. I dont know what it takes to develop games. I'm thankful that these devs even take the time to answer questions and try to implement as much as they can given the time and technology.

If anything isn't in the game this year, there is always next year. Its not like this is the last 2k they will ever make and this is why they make these games yearly. Every year we see improvements. Ups and downs. Still, a great product.

NBA 2k far and away the best sports franchise. It's not even close.

In terms of outside-the-box thinking, I'd be perfectly cool with an expanded roster option where you can assign players to the D-League or overseas, and then those players become unplayable without corresponding roster moves. Perhaps a mechanic similar to the draft prospects where some abbreviated statistics show up to let you know their progress.

If it were possible to implement something minor like that roster status it would help bring the draft closer to real life. In real life, the second round is interesting mostly due to Eurostash guys that might be a few years away from coming over and raw players that need to be developed slowly. Being able to stash players would allow for greater variance in the draft class pools without the lower rated players being essentially useless. Currently a late second round pick is nothing but end-of-the-bench fodder that you can't afford to keep on your roster because a couple injuries will derail your rotation. A stash system would allow for players to search for future role players while not handicapping that user's roster.

Finally, while I think a full D-League might be cool, I don't find it critical for the implementation of this kind of system. I'm not going to pretend I know how easy it would be to add roster spots in the manner I'm suggesting, but I guess it seems more achievable perhaps? Even a stashing mechanism where you get next to no feedback could still improve roster construction, which would be huge for building on the improvements you guys have made in the draft and team building logic.

2k put in that work, they continue to amaze me on the amount of stuff they put into these games yearly. It's because of 2k I feel grateful to being a basketball fan because we have the best video game in sports period. The competition wishes they could pump out stuff this good.

There's too many games affected, too big a part of the schedule and too many teams by resetting a single close-out game in the playoffs. Including the potential timing of other users' games, it becomes very complicated to do this safely.

The reasoning for allowing resets in the playoffs is sound, just the same as allowing resets in the season. I do want to re-evaluate and take a stab at it for 2K17 after having a detailed discussion with the team to make sure we cover all edge cases.

It totally makes sense, just didn't have the time. Very happy to hear you're enjoying the mode though.
Leftos...based on this comment from 2k16...do we now have the ability to reset playoff games that disconnect in Myleague Online? Eagerly anticipating your answer on this vital issue. Thanks in advance.

Will there be a coach mode this year? If not, were you able to keep simcast live the same as last year?

Just wanted to know though, can somebody confirm that dynamic jerseys update is featured in MyCareer aswell ?
I dont want to have to start all over again mycareer in January.
Yes it's featured in MyCareer as well (I asked that same question earlier today).

Wow, 2K gamers have to remind themselves that this attention to non-monetised modes is going against the trend of the gaming industry. Look at FIFA. They only care about UT. Fantastic, ML/MyGM get better every year.

1. Being able to change user controlled teams in MyLeague is great. I cant remember why, but I recall needing to do this a few times last year.

2. Secondly, it;s great that new jersies can be brought in. Does this mean an ACE updates will be included in existing ML/MyGM saves? I think they were from memory last year. That might be a Czar/OG question.

I know right? I bought the Legend Gold Edition even before the first news started leaking back in July. Never had any moment of second guessing my decision.

You guys are really incredible. Every year you just rise above any expectations and gaming norms.

I wish there was a MYGM section in the blog, are there any new features or additions that are unique to MYGM?
