MLB 15 The Show News Post

The MLB 15 The Show gameplay stream is starting in a few minutes. You can click the "Spoiler Show" button below to watch it here at OS, or open a new browser and watch it. For those of you that miss out, we'll update this post with the archive when it is available on Twitch.

Some bullet points (Thanks jyoung!)

Graphics
  • Dynamic shadows in each stadium that will change over the course of the season
  • Colors will also change based on the amount of sun exposure
  • Grass and dirt colors are more accurate for each stadium
  • There are way more skin tones (they used to only have 13), which means you'll get much more realistic skin on dark-toned players
Gameplay
  • Directional hitting lets you influence where the ball will go, even in "timing only" mode
  • Dynamic pitch breaks make each pitch type easier to recognize and closer to how the ball acts in real life
  • Quick counts will start you in the middle of an at-bat more frequently. Pitchers will always start on a 1-1 count
  • Manual cutoffs are triggered by the L1 button and will help keep singles with a runner in scoring position from turning into cheap doubles
  • Outfielders have more curved, indirect routes, and will no longer just take straight paths to the ball. This should help reduce the number of undeserved doubles and triples
  • Infielders will follow the ball better and cover bases more realistically
  • There were no changes to umpires
  • The new MLB challenge system is in place for close plays at bases
  • Lots of new catching, tagging, and throwing animations were captured; they are unique to each base
  • Baserunners will slow up now and dynamically change their run speed based on where the ball is hit
  • There is more of a separation this year between fast and and slow runners
  • Expect less warping and no more sudden, unrealistic speed boosts in all fielding animations
  • You can use analog swings with timing hitting now
  • Meter pitching is more sensitive and has more risk/reward. Missing your mark has more of a penalty, hitting your mark has more of a benefit
  • Fielding and throwing sliders are now separated into different slider categories for infield/outfield
Next week: There will be a video blog for licensed equipment and the universal rewards system.
In the future: More twitch broadcasts are coming. A "presentation" stream will be next.

UPDATE: If you missed the stream, you can watch the archive here or click the "Spoiler Show" button below.

I did N.Y. by checking 4 days of each month and compiling the data....I've just been really busy to go through more right now...and time is tight(maybe even too late...) for them to look at this for '15.

Anaheim, CA is way, way off. I'm not gonna pull the proof, but I go to around 20 games a year & the temperature for 7pm games is high 70's or hotter for at least 80% of the season if not more. I went to 2 playoff games, & even in October it was cooking outside. Winter is the only time of year in So Cal that it'll be cooler than 60 in the evening.

Edit: just checked the weather for the week of September 28 thru October 4 2014. The lowest temperature was 61 degrees. Anaheim is not cold during baseball season!! I've been saying this for a few years now.

Let's get the career stats fixed and player models improved before we worry about minute things like temperature. No offense to anyone and I mean that sincerely, but some of the things discussed here need to be address at the very end. I feel like the gameplay, franchise mode and online need much more attention than retractable roofs, amounts of rain, temperature, grass texture etc. If you have a car that needs engine repair, do you go and buy new rims??

I like seeing the pitching and going with it.

I know some people will argue that that's not how baseball works. But I disagree, at least to some extent. I'm not going to give my baseball resume, but let's just say that I know a thing or two about the game. There are, at times, situations where you're looking for a specific pitch in a specific location, sure. Obviously hitters' counts. You can look for that one pitch, in that one location. But I like to be able to recognize the pitch and hit it where it is. Given, if I'm looking for offspeed low and away and I get busted up and in with a high 90's fastball, chances are I'm not going to pull the ball with power. But having an approach where the count is 1-1, or even full, it's nice to kind of look middle of the plate and adjust to where and what kind of pitch is thrown. I hope directional hitting allows for this.

*This point (at least the latter part) was not directed toward you. So please don't take it the wrong way. I saw some earlier comments from some people that basically told me how hitting works in real life. And again, I don't need such an explanation.
Your approach for this mechanic confuses me. You can move it around as you like as you described but to me using it with a zone hitting mindset is a mistake imo. The mechanic is directional hitting, if I am trying to induce a fly ball to get a sac fly I am pushing up. If I follow your approach and the ball comes in low I should be pulling it down which most likely is going to create a ground ball. At the event I used like a situational tool, coming to the plate with a plan to move runners over, sac flys etc.

Like I said you can use it however you like and I am really just offering general knowledge to the forum on how the mechanic was meant to be used by coming to the plate with a plan to get a desired result. For the record I like no camera shift as well.

Love the player speed changes! I've seen far too many balls caught that should have fell. You have to perfectly split the gap to even have a shot at extra bases. I'm all for anything and everything that makes the game more realistic. Proper hat and shoe sizes are secondary. I'm concentrating on Kershaw dropping a yellow-hammer on me, not if the SS has his bill tilted like he does when the shadows move in at 4 p.m. during a late afternoon game. This game brings that plus all the extra little cosmetic touches. I applaud the team that develops this experience and I thank them for "getting it", then delivering. I'm finally buying a PS4 in anticipation of their 2nd effort on it.

I hope (since they've been doing a lot with lighting) that in night games nearby buildings have some windows with lights on. The all lights off look of past games is a little dead and post apocalyptic for my taste haha.

Sorry haven't had a chance to go through all the posts/new info yet(got some reading ahead of me) but was anything mentioned about catchers reactions being toned down in regard to the above quote.

Nem addressed this on the second page of the gameplay thread.

I know they mentioned the dynamic shadows, will 3:05 games be different this year? Last year, they never had the lights on like they would at the beginning, and at some point in the game, the shadow stopped progressing. By the 7th or 8th inning, it should look like the beginning of a night game.

Sorry if I missed it somewhere, the fact that they gave us a ton of info to sift through is a good problem to have, but will this year's game actually have such a transition?

Its not anywhere near dark at 6 for 90% of the season.

Right, but typically the field is covered in shadow, and the lights are on in this game. Also, if the game runs long, it might even have to transition into night. Though this would be more important in the playoffs:

Last year, a 3:00 game in October:

This is in the middle of a late-afternoon playoff game in 1997:

I suppose the fact that we get to worry about things like this illustrates just how spoiled we've been with this series over the years.

What? They still have the cut outs, new turf but that is all.

Not the best picture but you can clearly see the cutouts.

That's a shame... all dirt infield would've been a nice upgrade.

Any idea on how in depth the franchise mode will be? I miss the days of MVP Baseball where you have to play in a stadium that starts small but grows as the team does. Also, any chance you can move and re-brand a team like this past year's Madden had? By far and away that was the best aspect of the game

Cant move or change team names.

Is that an MLB restriction or just something they haven't implemented?

If it's MLB I wonder if totally fictional teams would be allowed to be in the league and move around. Like a more story based franchise mode. You start as a poor expansion team (limited resources, low quality facilities, meh stadium) then you move your way up by accomplishing goals (acquire or develop an allstar, develop a franchise player, win the division, win the World Series, campaign and win the rights to hold the allstar game, etc). All the way up to being a dynasty.

I believe there are some things MLB wont allow them to do. Not sure if that is one of them or not. But if it is MLB saying they cant move or change names i would assume MLB wouldnt want any fake teams either.

Yeah man... holy hell would that be sweet or what

Madden uses real cities [Los Angeles, Mexico City, etc] with fake names/logos/unis [Bulldogs, Knights, etc]

There is a 0% chance of any of this happening.

That sucks. Any particular reasoning why? I can't see the MLB halting a game mode with fantasy cities and teams.

Looks like The Show series will continue to be the only major sport I don't buy every year, but every other year. Hope they institute something like this for '16 then
