NBA Live 14 News Post

Earlier today the NBA Live 14 team hosted a Twitter chat with Gameplay Designer, Scott O'Gallagher and Executive Producer, Sean O'Brien.

It's still too early for the team to show any 5 on 5 gameplay footage, but they plan on showing it off later this summer, along with the full feature set of gameplay modes.

We didn't expect too much from the chat, but quite a bit of information was revealed. Below are some more relevant details that came from the chat.
  • Team specific playbooks, team specific defenses
  • A.I. will be driven by real world data with CourtQ
  • Shot percentages determined by different contest levels
  • Fatigue will affect player speed and performance
  • Player accessories and player likeness will remain in lockstep daily and throughout the year
  • The Ignite Engine will improve animation quality, physics and fluidity
  • You can get dunked on and see various animations, none of the animations are canned
  • Full featured title
  • 5 on 5 gameplay will be shown in the summer, along with the full list of game modes
  • Xbox One and PS4 exclusive
  • Crowds will have more animation, logic and Gen 4 graphics for more realism
  • You can block dunks
  • Dunk packages are in
  • Authentic arenas, ESPN TV presentation
  • New locomotion systems results in authentic movement
  • Yes, you will be able to call in-bound plays
  • NBA Live 14 will feature legends
  • There will be all types of put-backs
  • We have the #1 ESPN NBA team, and a surprise coming later
  • Sliders are in
  • 40 players with signature moves, plus packages (Melo confirmed)
  • Authenticity is the biggest emphasis on the game, along with everything at the team level - i.e. styles of play, coaches etc.

Like everything else...Just wait and see. No point jumping to any conclusions before we've seen any gameplay.

Just like the whole dribble engine thing, all these features sound very promising, but potentially overly ambitious for a complete reboot. EA seems to understand what all basketball games couldn't pull off so far and goes into the right direction, but can they really make it work on the first try? Not so sure about that. I mean team specific styles are a fantastic idea, but Live 14 would be pretty much the first sports game executing this concept properly. Nobody could do it right until now.

Just look at how 2k implemented differences between players and teams so far. Until 2k11, playcalling was hardcoded to fit default rosters, meaning that years deep into franchise mode, the Lakers will still call most plays for their SG even if their main option is playing another position. Then they included touches, which is broken even in 2k13. No real progress there for basically a decade. If you ignore presentation and animations, gameplay is just as one dimensional as in the PS2 days. It looks much more real today, but the mechanics are as flawed as ever.

What I'm saying is that EA's direction sounds awesome, but right now they're promising a lot of things that never worked. 2k couldn't do it. EA couldn't do it with other franchises. Restart a FIFA CPU vs CPU game on higher difficulty levels a few times and the exact same play will happen over and over again. It's pathetic. Maybe Live 14 will be different, but I'm still skeptical.

Jeff Van Gundy? No thanks.

Sounds like its going to be an awesome game. Of course that is if you actually believe everything this guy is saying. Going by EAs track record with their b-ball games gives me pause....

This is what's it's about competition. I am a NBA Live Fan that converted over to 2K when 360/PS3 launch. I love what 2k has to offer but they need another game out to keep them on their toes just like Madden does. I'm pulling for NBA to give a strong gameplay showing on the court. If your a 2k fan you should be hoping for the same thing. I like what I hear fix the player models and we might have something.

I want to play it. I'm interested in seeing the game, but I just want to play it. It's been too long.

humm, leaving aside implementation, the sole prospect of having teams play distinct defensive and offensive schemes, coupled with Synergy, has me intrigue ... looking forward to hear/read more and watch some vids.

"Team Specific Defenses" ....... I think Czar said it best for NBA 2K13 "The offense is light years ahead of the defense"....... If this is true and they get it right, it will be a HUGE plus for the 5 on 5 gameplay.

Do we think that this addition is only possible due to the fact that next gen has the power? (i.e; will next gen elevate NBA 2k14's team defences - or at least attempt to....?)

Some of the other things listed were also good to read..... one can only hope its not just salesmanship that doesn't make its way into the game somehow....

I agree with this, just think how cool it would be to have the Bulls "No paint" defense where they foul/bump you when you get in the lane. That feature sounds really cool and promising.

wtf is this answer all about?..people give a **** about all those gimmick names?..es sports will win or fail on 5-5 gameplay alone..I don't like this answer..synerge has done nothing to me and it's been talked about for a while now..competition has sig moves and I don't think they can beat that..again bouncetek means zero if the gameplay sucks
Synergy= better than 2k insider BY FARRRRRRRRRRRRR
bounceTek= TBD
Sig Moves= needed, and removed them along with signature jumpshot releases from 2k13.

Cmon son gotta think before typing

you play 2k games right?....love your response by the way

That all sounds nice but I will wait until I hear about franchise modes and online franchise mode. 2K has let me down BIG time in those key areas so if Live has something competent I'm willing to give it a shot.

yeah i have been with 2k from beginning along with live but i know a good thing when i see it. 2k has its faults that arent fixed every year as well as live. 2k insider his done a lackluster job compared to live 10's method. I dont take any sides unlike many so called bball fans. I want both companies to put out their best game so the decision on which to get will require thought. Live does things better like paint defense and playbooks but 2k excels at presentation and overall gameplay. I want the best of both worlds

ok cool, i'm just happy i'm not the only one on here who plays both since 2k started and played live for a while as well..and is able to tell the truth about both games without being bias at all...i played live since live 95 on sega...2k since it came out on dreamcast.

Since you're mentioning older games...that's exactly what I hope EA can do with Live 14, bring back some of the excitement of games that made huge steps in the genre. The first 2k on Dreamcast was something else back then. Crowd looked amazing at the time and there were certain moves like a behind the back bounce pass animation you could pull off with someone like Jason Williams that really made this game feel like the developers care.

Same with Live 2000. The franchise mode was basically not that much worse than anything both EA and 2k have been offering in future games. Some aspects like the draft player profiles with strengths/weaknesses were actually implemented in a much more accessible and less gimmicky way. And presentation wise, it had at least some class to it. Laid back soundtrack and none of the cheap trashy stuff EA/2k used later on. Jay-Z is jumping around in some music video/player highlights before a game, but they can't include proper player introductions we had even on Dreamcast? What a joke. But the menus are golden now, good job.

Hopefully EA can bring some of that flair back since I'm tired of 2k trying to make the same old formula "cool" over and over again. We need some innovation from both companies and eye candy won't cut it.

At least EA seems to understand which aspects need the most attention, whether they can pull it off? No idea.

yea that's of stuff i have been leaving on EA's accounts that we need some of that old features from back in the day...its crazy how these companies give us one thing and past and then in the future we lose all of it...as far as 2k goes..they just going through that phase EA went through when you feel like you don't have competition..hopefully 2k wont doing anything crazy that will hurt them with their like EA end up doing to their basketball game in the past.
If EA wanted to really hurt us they would have let us buy those crappy games they made in the past two or three years, they didn't so that let me know that they know when their game is going to suck or not.(happy about that in the long run of things) If they release their game this year and they have no choice but to pull out all the stops, at least enough to get our attention back...they not going to sell more then 2k now but once its just focused on new gen in the next few years..that will be a different statement if they do things right this year.

Sounds like we have a Sim basketball competition brewing.
