NBA Live 13 News Post

NBA Live 13 has been canned, kicked to the curb, canceled, put out to pasture. However you want to put it, NBA Live 13 is no more.

Below is a statement from EA Sports Executive Vice President, Andrew Wilson.

Quote:
After a lot of consideration, we have made the decision to not launch NBA LIVE 13. I'd like to give you a bit of perspective.

When we started the process of bringing back NBA LIVE, we knew it was going to be a long journey. We started by moving the game to a new studio. We brought in some of the best new technology that has helped fuel innovation in our other games. We launched an even deeper level of engagement with our community to gather more feedback directly from fans. And we built a whole new development team to bring it all to life. We felt like we were on the right path.

We also made a commitment to deliver a high quality experience — this is what our fans expect and what we demand of ourselves at EA SPORTS. But making great games is not easy, and we're just not there yet on NBA LIVE 13. Having continued to look at the game over the past few days, it's clear that we won't be ready in October. And rather than launch midway through the season, we're going to sit out the full year and stay focused on making next year’s game great. This decision puts us on the right track for success well into the future in a rapidly changing industry.

I'm disappointed that we have not yet met our high expectations with NBA LIVE, but I remain motivated about where we're going. We're committed to delivering new innovation in online, and our progress in the visual presentation of the game continues to take big strides. We also know that a great game starts with great gameplay, and this remains a huge priority for us.

This wasn't an easy decision, but it's the right one for our fans. I hope you'll agree when you're able to play the game next year.

Andrew Wilson
Executive Vice President, EA SPORTS

I'd like to echo the sentiments above: would love to see another college basketball game as some output of all this wasted development time and expense. NCAA 10 was a solid title; a little tweaking and it's fairly ready to go. Heck, make it a download title ($20) to cut on costs, work off whatever they engine in the bag. I doubt the NCAA Basketball license is that costly as there's been no serious bidders in 3+ years.

All mismanagement aside, this is a travesty; NBA Live 10 was so enjoyable. I'm not hating on 2K; I'm excited as hell heck about the physics/defense improvements. But sad, nonetheless.

thats not true....its a different engine all together. Fifa and nhl share similar gameplay attributes, and like 2k was able to do with its basketball game, ea was able to set a very very strong backbone to their games early on when the 'new' generation of consoles came out. They then have just been building upon that system of gameplay, similar to how 2k has done with its basketball game.

This is also why 2k's football games are so missed, because they had a far better gameplay system than madden at the time, and they could have built upon that and surpassed madden, while madden had a very arcadish system (same as live).

In fact werent some of the lead designers for fifa and nhl working on elite? Its just a different sport with different rules in terms of physics and gameplay, and they cant create a unique system to build upon.

I thought they had it this time, which is why i was sort of excited about live and downloading the game when it came out. I knew it wouldnt be as good as 2k, but i felt that if they had a decent game (like live 10) they could easily add things and tweak things to the consumers satisfaction and eventually in a few years compete with 2k....but i guess i was wrong

2K hasn't had any real competition since the 360 came out. Live has been a train wreck for years now. 2010 might have been an exception.

2K isn't EA. They don't need competition in order to put out a good product.

Management - Stop trying to be 2K and stop destroying and rebuilding the engine. Live 10 was a good game (80 metacritic) and it doesn't make sense that the game has been broken for 3 years since.

I don't think any developer could have saved this game from what they were trying to build off of. We can say Mike Wang this, Mike Wang that, the game was being build off of crud and the devs were trying to fix all of the mistakes that hockey guy made. Also stop belittling these devs, they've put their work in to get where they are today, they are qualified to make a video game, so bringing up Mike all the time is disrespectful.

It wasn't the devs that killed this series, it's management and looking back at how poorly this product has been manged the last Two years, it's obvious. No developer wants to make a terrible product, they have to listen to the higher ups and work with what they have. The devs have to follow orders, and EA felt that Elite could be a successful product so that's why they've built of of it. Please stop putting all of the blame on the devs, do they have a part to play yes, but I think the "suits" play the larger part in how good or bad a game will be.

I said this many months ago! Live was finished! It is unfortunate and sad because it had the potential (after NBA Live 10) to be great again...but something is going on internally at EA Sports that is causing these issues. I hope they can fix things and get back on track.

Funny how 2k plays like live niw with the new control stick dribble moves. Insult to injury. LOL

What have they been doing the last 2 years? Really? It's going to take 3+ years to make a bb game?

1. If the Beta Video was never Leaked they would have released the worst game that has come from EA

2. They cancelled it so they can "HOPE" that they can make a game decent enough to jip us out of 60$

You this game fell by the waist side after Mike wang went to 2k. You know i always believed the whole one man don't make a team but i no longer feel that way after watching the colts last year and watching EA sports the pass 2 years

in hindsight, you can say 2k was exclusive all this gen pretty much. This gen has been around, 6,7 byears or so. For 3 of those years, live have been absent.

I dont think 2k needs to buy exclusive rights, I think they are fine saving their money and churning out a better game than its comp. EA bought the madden license because they felt threatened by 2k, they knew they had a weak established system and over time its only been proven. 2k basketball is just like nhl and the show....those games dont have exclusive licences but they are so much better than their comp. that over time no other company is even bothering spending money on making a game that wont stack up.

I was gonna write a huge blog about this, but essentially i dont think 2k "didnt have time" to put crew in 2k13, i think they had crew done, but they were saving it as their trump card. Ea showed their hand first, and eventually decided they were gonna opt for an arcade release at reduced price, so 2k13 redacted crew to save it for next year.

I dont think that 2k12 was pretty weak in gameplay, they knew they were the only game that year and so they really experimented with some things, and worked on presentation more than gameplay, setting up a new backbone. 2k probably felt live would present a game this year, so they implemented a better game for 2k13 (so essentially you could say 2k13 had a two year development cycle). If live had created a better game this year, im positive 2k would have announced crew as well.

If live takes another year off, then i can see 2k14 being almost the same as 2k13, with slight tweaks here and there and just adding a crew mode. I think 2k14 will be the last basketball game for this generation of consoles, and i fully expect live to reboot for the new generation, so 2k15 will be far better than 2k14....

But more to your point, i dont think competition is what makes a good game. Fifa and nhl, and the show have had little to no real competition the last couple years, yet they are still incredibly well done games...its all about having a great backbone...and live and madden have failed at establishing a good core system

Don't feel bad at all. Yes I'm a 2K fan and this is the way NFL2k and Madden settled the best game. Not EA monopolizing the NFL game market.

But really in the end the only people who feel it is us. Competition and choices are always good....

Now we got one choice for NHL,NFL,NBA, let's pray PES sticks around to push FIFA.
