NCAA Football 13 News Post

NCAA Football 13 Title Update #2 is available now for 360 and PS3.

As posted yesterday, below are the list of fixes.

Gameplay
  • Zone Defense has been updated.
- We improved receiver leverage logic as well as predicting when a receiver will be in or out of their zone.
- Improved Deep Half Zone decision making about when to split between uncovered receivers. Also, allow more zone overlapping in deep half to cover more area.
- Deep half defenders were dropping too close to the sideline or dropping outside when no receiver was outside of their position.
  • No-Huddle QB Spy bug fixed. Defenders will no longer go into spy assignments while in man coverage.
  • Receivers weren’t looking for hot-read passes.
  • CPU QBs passing during the drop would get set passes instead of on-the-run inaccurate passes.
  • Change the logic of man defenders so they don't run into the backfield and past the receiver they are covering.
  • Route running near sideline was causing issues especially on comeback routes.
  • Fixed players not respecting global show blitz/press/back off coverage after handing off a receiver.
  • Fixed sideline streak routes so they don't get clamped in a way that the route would end after 10 or 15 yards.
  • Drive summaries should now reset after each scoring drive.
  • Fixed HB stretch play issue where TE’s would be frozen in place during certain blocking animations.
  • Fixed an issue where if a defender made an interception in the end zone and fumbled the ball before his feet touched the ground, it was being counted as a fumble and not an incomplete pass.
  • Resolved an alignment issue where DB on HB would pick up FB instead of HB when HB was put in motion
  • Removed exploit that allowed users to create slant routes to the sideline by motioning a WR and flipping the play.
  • QB Rushing up the middle from under center effectiveness has been balanced.
  • FG holders are no longer downed by contact.
  • Increased frequency of AI using ball carrier special moves.
  • AI play call tuning: No 4th and long run calls; less draws and screens.
  • Ball Hawk feature implemented for user pass defense.
  • Fixed frozen players after celebration dives.
  • Fixed wildcat Play Action exploit.
  • Fixed Defenders not reacting to the QB on read option and option plays when the users defensive adjustment vs. option is set to Aggressive.
  • Fixed shake blitz exploit.
  • Fixed exploit that allowed kicking team to recover squib kicks using low rated kickers.
  • Fixed defensive hot routes after offensive play flip.
  • Fixed issue where waiting for the defense to make their adjustments before picking a play when running ho huddle/hurry up offense caused the defense to reset their play back to the original play.
  • Fixed ‘Jump the Snap’ blitz exploit.
  • Resolved issue where defenders would not react or would be stuck in read and react behavior vs. the option.
Dynasty
  • Once a promise becomes active, it was duplicating after each week advance.
  • Recruit Reports & Advisory options remained even after the "Allow Time Savers" setting was turned off.
  • Schools with a D+ Program Tradition could not get their grade increased through wins and championships.
  • In the off-season, post season games were not shown to have been played.
  • Fixed an issue where walk-on players were not appearing on the Online Dynasty Web Site.
  • You will now get your points back if a recruit instantly commits during a phone call.
  • Fixed an issue where swayed pitches and grades weren’t being displayed correctly.
Custom Playbooks
  • Fixed an issue where if CPU coaches were given a custom playbook, the players were occasionally lining up close to the ball.
  • Fixed an issue where the user was unable to create an offensive playbook that consisted of 1 of every formation.
  • Fixed an issue where the user was sometimes losing functionality after the UI disappears in Custom Playbooks.
  • Increased the stability of the product by fixing various crashes.
In addition, you will see a "Uniform Store" added to the menu. If it's an update to a team's default uniform, you will get those uniforms at no additional charge, via download in the store if and when available. The first uniforms will be available in the store beginning next month.

EDIT: and the safety issue is still there in cover 2. They'll initially back up, then they'll just stand there and trail
It's ALWAYS BEEN when they run cover 2. They hit a magical wall and dont go back any further.

My observations after a couple of games. I feel like there was a lot of stuff tuned that was not mentioned in the patch blog, but I think that that is always the case with the second title update for these games.

One thing that I really like is that even though they made a lot of gameplay/A.I. tweaks, I don't feel like I have to make any changes to my sliders. Win-Win for me.

There were several things that didn't get fixed, the big one being, of course, the CPU's love for the aggressive zone defensive coverage. Second on the list of things that I would have liked to see tuned better is the CPU playcalling during late game hurry up offense. They know that time is short, but the playcalling is not reflective of that knowledge. Pointless timeouts, FG attempts out of range, and the 0-0 points for D- categories in recruiting are some other unfixed issues. There are a few others, but noting else major for me so far.

CPU zone play has been improved exponentially, as others have seen there are still occasional breakdowns, but with my pass rush settings I might have 4-5 seconds to make a deep throw, 3 or 4 times a game. I almost messed around as lost my last game because I threw 5 picks, 4 of them testing seam routes. On some plays defenders are too late in turning and running with the receiver, but I'm not seeing guys uncovered up the middle anymore. Also, I have altered the coach settings for every team I play against making them much more conscious of stopping the pass, and more conservative in their playcalling. I'm sure that helps quite a bit.

Speaking of the pass rush. I feel like they tuned the interaction between the OL/DL some more. I'm not seeing as many of those 2 yard bounce backs from contact between the OT and the DE,also the OT's are less "sticky" than they use to be, and my controlled DE is getting thrown to the ground much, much less than he use to.

RB's for both the User and CPU are much more dynamic, they use moves more, (even when the User is controlling a RB, automatic animations kick in more). The juke, spin and truck are more effective as well. They are much better at making the first defender miss the tackle.

Speaking of tackles, there seems to be more regular tackles and not as many missile strikes. Defenders aren't taking those perfect pursuit angles as much, and the CPU isn't trying to Hit Stick the ball carrier into a coma on every single play. For those of us who don't know an exploit, punt returns are more exciting now because of this.

The screen sacks have been addressed of course, also QB's are using the avoidance moves more. My QB is now doing it more automatically, without me flicking the RS.

User picks and swats work much better too.

If something that was working before is now broken, I haven't seen it yet, so besides that persistent aggressive zone defensive setting, I don't really have anything to complain about.

At the very least put the extra uniforms that are already on disk that people who ordered off of Amazon got (like UGA, Michigan St) in the Uniform Store.
I seem to remember someone from EA tweeting that those won't be available to buy for a few months. Because they want the preorder to mean some sort of exclusivity.

All in all, after all the trouble I have had with the Zone Defense for the CPU, after all the testing and finding the right balance on sliders, I feel that IMO this plays a decent game of football. Is it perfect? No ... I don't expect it to be. Does it allow enough fun factor for ME to enjoy this game? Yes. To me, that's all that matters. It's really what you make out of this game. I've went through multiple bouts of slideritis and whatnot to get to where I am now.

The CPU plays smart enough on their zones now that I can enjoy this game. Sure, it took tweaking the gameplay sliders AND coaching sliders, but I can live with that. I still feel that not enough TLC gets shown to gameplay year in and year out, but as a long time EA gamer, I've come to accept that to thoroughly enjoy an EA Sports Football Title, there must be tweaks. What I've gotten out of this patch will finally allow me to play my Dynasty without the numerous frustrating issues that have plagued me when trying to enjoy this game up to this point.

I've seen alot of good things come from this patch, not only the zone d's are IMPROVED, not greatly, but IMPROVED, but also I'm seeing smarter CPU reactions and not as many brain dead calls by the CPU. Yes, I know, they still exist, but once again, that's EA Football. The ball carrier using their special moves is another great way that this has been improved. All in all, it's not perfect, but it will be enough to get me by this year. EA has year after year dosed us with unacceptable gameplay, etc. but this year they have IMPROVED, once again it's not great, but IMPROVED. This enough says they are listening. They can't appeal to everyone and I'm sure if the devs were allowed to, they would try their damndest to appeal to everyone they could, but they are limited to what they can do coming from the EA big wigs.

I know that not everyone is pleased with this game, but I will say it again, I can get by this year with what EA has dished out. I still see a ton of room for improvement and EA needs to realize that they can't stop here. The improvements must keep coming. I really feel like EA has gotten back on the right track. Bash me or praise me ... I don't care. I can finally enjoy virtual football again!

Loving the patch so far, best football game i have played to date (never played 2k series).

CPU's running and passing game are like a 1-2 punch and the improved defense makes short passes more of the focal point instead of 10-15 yard throws.

I can go on forever but the game with sliders i am using is unbelievable. Playing Boston College at Miami and BC is actually threatening and not a pushover on my schedule.

I cant wait to see how good Kansas State is when i play them.

Sounds like the patch avoided introducing significant glitches or bugs, so that's a win in my book. The no huddle bug is bothersome, but I've always been bothered by that "i can't hear you" animation in the game, home or road. I've never seen or been around a football team that has used verbal signals between QB and WR, even at the high school level where crowd noise is not a concern. Occasionally some small college or high school teams will use verbal signals from the sideline in addition to hand signals, but not often.

I could understand if that animation existed between QB and OL or QB and HB, both of whom utilize verbal signals to convey assignments but just about every team uses hand signals to get stuff out to receivers. You practice those signals as if you're on the road in the stadium of your loudest opponent every game, that way when you do get to those loud venues, it is already second nature.

I guess I understand the need to instill a little confusion for low awareness players, but it isn't done properly in the game. The new no huddle bug will be very frustrating late in games with the clock running or in the cases where you want to sprint to the line to get a play off rapid fire.

I would rather the confusion take place in terms of false starts and false snaps on the OL. Guys not hearing the snap count or forgetting the snap count or not hearing the cadence. Way more realistic than that ridiculous WR animation.

can't pass now, back to psychic safety play. Thanks to all the whiners, we're back to a game that is fun if you only like to run Iso, power, and stretch every play. Sometimes people get open in college football and there can be busted coverages. Mix up your defense and you won't get burned by four verts every day. Spread is the number one offense in college football, and we can't run air raid any more. Game went from fun to crap. Way to go community.

# 209 eagskerfan @ 08/15/12 09:45 PM
oh yeah, most teams run the ball or play screens on 4th down unless way behind. Otherwise it's pretty easy to get a pick. That was stupid as well.

What are you talking about? I can pass pretty well still and I haven't seen any psychic safeties so far. Also i'm having a blast with the new patch and I don't run Iso, power, and stretch every play. And how cant you run Air Raid anymore? I was using West Virginia and picking Maryland's coverage apart. I'm just not seeing any of the things you mentioned.

Read the defense and you wont have a problem. Don't pick a coaches play and expect it to work. Run the ball to set up the pass and vice versa.

Utilize your players skills. if you want the deep ball dont throw to TJ Houshmandzadeh. If you want to go across the middle dont throw to desean jackson. Utilize your teams strengths and stop just trying to chuck up passes for quick TD's and work the defense.

If all else fails play on freshman.

Played one unranked game online. The 10 yard curl was even more money than before. Not sure if opp. had zone on conservative or what, but it was ridiculous. The defender in the shallow zone would randomly run up after about 2-3 seconds, even when there was no underneath route on that side. And once I saw the defender over top in the deep zone randomly sprint away toward the sideline.

# 213 TheShizNo1 @ 08/15/12 10:06 PM
Hey guys, I know 4 verticals, in theory, should destroy cover 2. I'm not talking about the safeties getting beat schematically. I'm talking about the safeties NOT dropping back until the WR is passed them. That isn't coverage, it's a bug.

That being said, I still like the game and am close to loving it. Besides that and the no huddle bug, I don't have any major problems w/ it.

Wouldn't it take forever to remove cover 2 from playbooks? I mean, it and variations of it are in every formation.

# 214 tyberious4now @ 08/15/12 10:08 PM
I can pass also...And great freaking patch EA I'm loving this game even more!!!!

# 215 tacosaban @ 08/15/12 10:15 PM
Yeah! EA should take that crowd noise causing receivers to go all crazy with the I can't hear animation out of the game. Or make it like when you still hear Lee Corso. Once in a blue moon! You definitely don't see it in every game like you do on this game.

# 216 pdiehm @ 08/15/12 10:23 PM
if the safeties were psychic, they wouldn't bite on the play-action the way they do.

Why wouldn't 4 vert's destroy a cover 2? If you want to destroy cover 2, you run seams and posts.

Cover 3 would be better vs verticals, but cover is the one that would be the best IMO. but you are giving up the underneath routes then and draw's.

Cover 3 is an open door for curls and slants.

Cover 2 opens the doors for corner routes (behind the CB, and in the open area against the safety dropping back.

I'm tired of people supporting this loud noise patch, it isn't realistic at all. How often these days do you see QB's yelling to their receivers an audible from 30 yards away? Thats complete BS. All the calls come from signals and checking or wrist bands or play calling sheets. It slows the game WAY down. 80% of the time the offense in a no huddle scheme has the play called before they're at the line.

The patch sucks.

You're not following. It's not the safety splitting the WR's and getting burned or not being able to get over the top.

Pay attention! Are you following? The safety will not back pedal until the WR is even or passed and then he will trail him. His first movement should be back and stay that way. That doesn't happen. As the last line of defense, he steps up. That's not correct. And it's only during cover two. That is an issue.

It happens all the time. On no huddle plays are made from scratch and the quarterbacks will be talking to everyone to make sure they are on the right page.

Watch a Colts game and you will see why Peyton and Harrison are the greatest duo in NFL history.

I truly think NCAA 13 is one of the best Football games made to date... I'm a huge RTG fan/Superstar/My Player/CAL... I just like taking one player and being responsible for that one player... Some might not like the camera for RTG, but I absolutely love it... The swivel at field level makes it really feel as if I'm on the field for real...

NOW, the problem... No matter HOW MUCH practice I can not get a pick consistent enough... My Player don't even ATTEMPT to make a play on the ball pressing triangle... The is bul ish and caused me to take the game back to GameStop because all I want to do is play safety, but can't even attempt an INT... Now my question is, does this "Ball Hawk" addition to the game help improve this??? It's still bul ish because I rather control when I jump for a INT not depend on the CPU to do it for me...
