MLB 13 The Show News Post

With the MLB 2K series all but confirmed to be dead, Kotaku's Owen Good has posted an article on what MLB 13 The Show must do to keep the fans of baseball gaming happy. It should be interesting, considering a simulation baseball game for the 360 doesn't look very likely.

Your long slog through your career in Road to the Show makes the game's threadbare commentary painfully apparent. I think the world of Matt Vasgersian but he is shackled to an outdated commentary engine given to repetition and dead air. Dave Campbell's dialogue library is really showing its age, and a majority of his work sounds like Dave Campbell playing Dave Campbell. Eric Karros should be thanked for his service and sent home. The Show has world class visuals and a smooth, if minimalist, broadcast presentation. The commentary supporting it has not pulled its weight in years.

In your opinion, what does MLB 13 The Show need to do next year to satisfy your baseball gaming needs?

Seeing players sign autographs before the game would be cool. I also liked the little shot of the locker room after the game a few years ago. That was nice.

Probably echoing many others with my wishlist but :

1. New progression system. At least have some random progression, like an A potential never progressing. The main issue with it is how slow progression takes. For example, Ryan Braun played briefly in the minors before coming up and he was instantly the best hitter on the Brewers. In the game, he wouldn't make it to that level for 6-7 years or more. An easy solution is to just have some A potential guys who just take off quickly.

I've traded for A potential players who were 24-25 thinking I would be able to insert them right in the rotation or starting lineup the following year, but they just progress so slowly.

2. Redesigned off season and draft presentation. There is nothing exciting about the draft or the offseason menus. I would love if they could incorporate a winter meetings feel to the offseason, something like texts and emails coming in from other GMs and media. Discussion of big trades and signings. Maybe a preview show discussing who the top free agents are and where the analysts think they will end up. Anything to freshen up the offseason and draft.

3. Atmosphere . I still don't think they are quite there with the atmosphere of baseball. The World Series still feels like a regular game, a sellout still feels like a game with 15,000. In my franchise I just won the World Series in the bottom of the 9th down 3-1. Tied the game at 3 and with the bases loaded hit a walkoff double to win the series. The place should have been going nuts, really loud with the screen shaking and the announcers getting excited. Instead it was just a routine double, the announcers never mentioned anything about a walkoff or winning the World Series and the players barely celebrated. Feels anti climactic and doesn't really make you want to get to the World Series again to experience the atmosphere.

With those 3 changes, the game would be absolutely perfect in my opinion.

More immersion in RTTS. Want to feel like more of the team, that I'm more connected to the other players. Not sure HOW to do that. With that said, RTTS is still the best My Player mode out there. I love how you can tailor it any way you want to your skill or style.

Also, somehow allow my RTTS guy to carry over to next year's game.

More stats. Would love to see a more robust stat system. I'd love to easily find a bunch of players either in the draft, or in the minors, that have high OBP or something (go the Moneyball route). Or to find those power hitters and put together a fierce HR hitting line up.

Other than that, I have a hard time finding other ways to improve the game. I'm not a diehard baseball fan, so I'm sure I'm missing something, but to me, it is the best sports sim available.

This sounds lunacy but hear me out. I frequently get burned out on the different pitching interfaces. How about a mode that cycles the different pitching options throughout a game. It would make it that much more challenging with regards to timing.

1- ability to enter stats and have SCEA create ratings for each of the classes (A, AA, AAA, MLB)

2-Historic franchises

Let's make it this simple, the new playoff format!

Even though I already know they are going to add it boy oh boy I cannot wait for it. I just finished my second year in my Twins chise and won the wild card. Well the last month instead of battling for my division I just wanted to get in by winning the wild card and knowing I'd have a full series. Well maybe my attitude would have been different had the new playoff system been in because honestly who the hell wants to play in a one game playoff game to actually play in a full series. Intense yes, but you would much rather be guaranteed 3 games than just one. The way it's played out in real life just has me amped for it in The Show.

For me, the biggest problem was on ground balls down the line....there was an animation where the first and third basement would go into an automatic animation of "missing the ball" before it got to them and 99% of the time the game did not allow for a dive.

If this is corrected, the game is fine for me and any improvements would be great. More accessories, more emotional animations from players, more custom celebrations...all good stuff.

I'd love that too, especially carrying over to next years game.

NBA2K has an incredible My Player mode that has lots of interaction.
If The Show could copy a lot of those aspects (fake Twitter accounts, interviews, etc), I'd be all in.
I love Career Modes so I'm hoping The Show 13 has something like that in store.

If I could add 1 more wish, it would be to invite a friend to compete in the same world as your RTTS player.
You don't have to be on the same team either.
Imagine logging in after work to find out your buddy just went 3/5 with a HR and 4 RBI's to take a lead over your stats?
OR, having to play a game against your friend's RTTS pitcher?
Or compete to see who will make it to the major's first?
That would be awesome!

I hope MLB 13 The Show adds the "Pitch counter" somehere on screen while in gameplay!

For example I am waatching playoff baseball on TBS and they always have the "Pitch counter" showing on that box that shows where the pitch crosses the plate.

I also would like to see the "3 dots" for outs on the top scorebar also just like on TBS

And in between innings I want the due up batters pictures to have their batting stats for the game like 0 for 2, 2 for 2 , 3 for 3

And when a batter hits a Home Run I want to see a cool looking overlay popup while the batter is rounding the bases or crossing Home Plate. Example " 2 Run Home Run David Ross 15th This Season" and for the playoffs as well " 2 Run Home Run David Ross 1st Of Playoffs" or something like that.

Like how its down on Fox baseball.

Just these 4 little presentation upgrades would make MLB The Show even more like a real TV baseball broadcast!

Make all the players batting stances/pitching motions actually look like the players stance. I'm tired of having some players stances look nothing like real life.

I have an idea for a new analog bunting interface.

Currently, it's hard to pull the bat back in a bunt stance because the batter has to come back to his standard hitting stance. In reality, batters stay in their squared-up bunting stance and just pull the bat back.

So, here's my idea: Use one of the trigger buttons to put your batter in a bunting stance and then press the right stick up to push the bat out over the plate and bunt the ball when it comes to the plate. This way, if you don't like the pitch you just don't press the right stick and the batter keeps the bat behind the plate. For a drag bunt, you would just press the trigger button and the right stick up as the ball reaches the plate.

This would also prevent the situation where you inadvertently try to bunt at a slow curveball at the last second (at least, that's a problem I have).

SCEA definately knows the bunting is currently bad, so I hope they do something about it next year like you suggest.

To me, they just need three things to make the on-the-field gameplay perfect:

1. Better bunting system.

2. Add speed control to the new pulse pitching from this year.

3. Give us more options for baserunners in different circumstances.

Anything else I can think of is really nitpicking such a great sim of the game.

Honestly love the game as is for the most part. I would really like to see some more classical stadiums. Maybe include some great teams of the past as well.

This one is a long shot, but maybe include real umpires with their own traits for calls.

# 614 fballturkey @ 10/07/12 01:14 PM
I mostly play RTTS so keep that in mind for my suggestions.

1) Change base running. Let me hit a button that skips to the pitch that the batter hits/strikes out/walks on. Don't force it in case I want to steal, but give me the option.

2) Change base running controls. Maybe they'll grow on me but I like L/R trigger controls better than the stick.

Those are really the only two things I don't like from The Show after playing for a week. A few other things that would make me like it more are better commentary and my coach not benching me when I steal on a passed ball.

o Keep improving Diamond Dynasty!
I love this mode! Maybe add a feature to build your own ballpark.

o Gameplay
o Bunting is still in the old gen phase. Looking into Pro Yakyuu Spirits bunting. Its very well done. Right now if you want to sac bunt you basically need to guess when or if the pitcher will throw a strike.
o More of a penalty for throwing breaking balls in the dirt over and over. Maybe more % of them going to the backstop.

o Online pitch to hit lag. Again look at what Pro Yakyuu Spirits does to eliminate this entirely. Basically the pitcher selects his pitch and location and does the meter thing on his side of the connection. That info is sent to the batters side and the pitch is played out. If contact is made it goes back to a live sync. Now this seems like it would cause a pause in the action but if done how it is in Pro Yakyuu Spirits does it you dont even notice.

Add a World Baseball Classic mode! (If SCEA has the license to do so)

# 617 Lewis160 @ 10/08/12 02:15 PM
Stats overlay!!! Im tired of the stadium dimensions like who cares about that. Also the weight and height of the pitchers before they pitch is kinda old. I want to see his stats vs that team or how well he pitches vs them.

Im currently in the playoffs with the Yankees and after playing the first game it felt like i was playing an exhibition game with no meaning. Other than the postseason logo painted in the field it felt like a regular season game. I hope we can get the playoffs logo in the players caps and jerseys. As for commentary they just announce the play and then go back to silence. They need to talk to each other even about random things because they are mostly quiet and its BORING!.

# 618 Kajeet95 @ 10/08/12 04:25 PM
Have different broadcast presentations. But so they wont have to pay for licensing and stuff they could make up their own channels/networks for example instead of MLB on FOX sports net it could be MLB on WOLF sports channel or instead of ESPN it could be TSBN(The Show Broadcasting Network).

I really like this years game! I've only had it for about 2 weeks but one improvement I would like to see is Wrigley Field updated for the Bud Light Bleachers in right field and would love to see the EAMUS CATULI sign up to date in right field of the rooftop complex. Also would love to see actual spring training complexes if that legally can be done and last but not least would love better annoucers such as a professional crew from like FOX, ESPN, or TBS

MLB 13: The Show needs to make some big changes to compete with Madden NFL 13 and NBA 2K13. These two games both reestablished their respective gaming franchises, with new and improved game modes. Connected Careers in Madden and MyCareer in NBA both proved took the "career mode" aspect and ran with it. Although SCEA has made very good games over the years in the MLB: The Show series, a big improvement like these two games sure wouldn't hurt anything at this point. Oh, and the franchise mode in MLB needs to have a more hands-on scouting and drafting experience, like the Connected Careers coach mode on Madden. I was really impressed with EA Sports with all of the new features in that game mode, like scouting points and XP. MLB would certainly make a statement by adding similar features like this. Hopefully my $60 next March will be spent on a game that is well worth it.
