MLB 13 The Show News Post

With the MLB 2K series all but confirmed to be dead, Kotaku's Owen Good has posted an article on what MLB 13 The Show must do to keep the fans of baseball gaming happy. It should be interesting, considering a simulation baseball game for the 360 doesn't look very likely.

Quote:
Your long slog through your career in Road to the Show makes the game's threadbare commentary painfully apparent. I think the world of Matt Vasgersian but he is shackled to an outdated commentary engine given to repetition and dead air. Dave Campbell's dialogue library is really showing its age, and a majority of his work sounds like Dave Campbell playing Dave Campbell. Eric Karros should be thanked for his service and sent home. The Show has world class visuals and a smooth, if minimalist, broadcast presentation. The commentary supporting it has not pulled its weight in years.

In your opinion, what does MLB 13 The Show need to do next year to satisfy your baseball gaming needs?

I mainly play franchise mode so most of the changes I'll list will be for that mode

-Please fix the trade ai logic of the computer. I keep seeing players like Pujols, Cano, Trout, and Strasburg on the trading block. I also keep seeing teams trade away young talent like Mike Trout or Anthony Rizzo for an aging veteran at the same position. Teams do not do this often yet it happens all the time.

-I think the contracts you can have players accept is not realistic. I was just looking at my contract offers and I was able to sign David Wright to an extension for around 5 million a year. He would get a lot more than that in real life. I also see players like Josh Hamilton signing a 2 year extension when he would get a lot more. Maybe have a varying "market value"? Like if one computer team overpays for a pitcher, other pitcher's prices will go up hoping to match that pitcher received. This would help to make the differences between big and small market teams more realistic

-Have the ability to sign players to extensions mid-season

-Have the ability to trade more than 3 players at a time. Also be able to trade cash like in real life as well as three team (or more) trades

-Implement 10 and 5 status with players and the deadlines for when they can be traded. All-Star baseball 2005 had both of these and I enjoyed them. I don't like the fact that I can sign a guy in the off-season and immediately trade him

-As others have said, have varying ratings progression for each players. Have some A rated prospects fail but have some D succeed. It would be a nice addition

-Have players play out their contract. I don't like signing a guy to a multiyear deal and then have them retire after the first year. ESPN NFL 2K5 had a feature where you could talk players out of retirement and I think that would be a nice feature

-Have the ability to invite players to spring training without putting them on the 40 man roster

-Have the computer give you counter proposals from time to time for trades

-Top 100 prospect list

-Have teams wearing their team's jersey in the all-star game (if its possible, it might not be)

-Have stuff like MVPs, Cy Youngs, silver sluggers, gold gloves, increase the asking price of players

-Allow us to pick a custom song for a player's at-bat or bullpen entrance music (we might already be able to do already this I don't quite remember)

-Allow players to play in rehab games while on the DL

Non-franchise mode changes

-Fix R.A. Dickey's knuckleball. Either increase the speed limit of the pitch or make a "Hard knuckleball" pitch that is exclusive to him

-Add more realism and life to the crowd. If the team is in a playoff race or is in the playoffs, have the crowds be louder and more into the game. If there's a runner on second and there a base hit to the outfield, have the crowd start cheering immediately. If you decide to take a pitcher out who is pitching well, have the crowd boo your manager, that sorta thing

-Improve the throwing animations. Too often the computer hits a routine ground ball to the shortstop and the runner is safe because the animation takes too long

-Have the option to slide step with a runner on base. All-Star Baseball 2005 let you do this by holding the x button when you pitched. It could be implemented similarly in the show

-Let you argue calls with the umps and have your manager thrown out. MVP Baseball 2005 had this and I'm surprised the Show hasn't implemented it yet

-I may be alone in this but in Road to the Show, I feel like having the option to watch every pitch of the game would be nice, even if you're not playing or involved in the current play

I don't expect all of these to be implemented, but if they were, the game would be perfect

I really hope something is done with the commentary, some new voices and better interaction would allow me to have a more complete experience. Also the pickoffs to 1st and the base stealing mechanics being improved would provide for better gameplay.

How about not have the computer play the bounces off the wall perfectly every time?

Definitely agree on a more realistic crowd.

How about showing crowds leaving if it's a blowout? I don't think the attendance thing is that realistic.

There needs to be a "fog of war" built in. I really don't want to know the true rating of a player. I don't want my scouts or coaches to always be right about them either. I want to have a reason to fire my scout...look for a new one....same with coaches......and I want to eventually evaluate the player on my own....HOW?...by his performance.
If my scout and my coach are both telling me..."this guy can't miss" ...but he hits .220 with 5 homers for 3 straight seasons. YOU'RE FIRED!...and sorry Player X, but McDonald's is your new employer.

Oh..and if I screw up as GM...I want the owner to tell me I'M FIRED.(or not offered a new contract)
That should be put back in!

Or, some poor saps working for the Astros could see him and they could be his new employer.

As for GM firings, it should only be an option. It always annoyed me when you could be fired from your job without the option of immunity, but some people may want those goals at the beginning of the year to actually mean something. You know; maybe Nolan Ryan's sick of JD eating all of his giant chili dogs and tells him to win a World Series within two years or he's replacing him with Rangers Captain (the mascot). Certainly not the most likely scenario, but you probably get the general premise.

Curtain Calls would be a cool addition.

I'm fairly certain there are already curtain calls. They're very rare, though.

Totally agree. It's funny because it seems like every single year a double header has a huge impact on a playoff race. I remember back in 09 the Twins and Tigers were dueling for the final two weeks of the season for the division title. The Twins and Tigers had a double header scheduled on the monday of the final week of the season. Sure enough the Twins won both games and needless to say they went to game 163 and the Twins won. It's just an example of how rainouts/double headers can come back later in the season. It just would help make franchise mode that much better. No question there are a lot of moving parts to adding this in, but I have full confidence SCEA could do it.

They are there I had one after a 3 HR game once ( but far and few between )

How often do curtain calls happen in real though...

Not very often, IMO.

1- Just get rid of the sweat on the hats. It looks downright silly on managers and guys on the bench, also on all players when it's 48 degrees outside in the game. Only a small fraction of players sweat through their hats anyway, even on the hottest days of the summer.
2- Open/closed roof option. Seeing fans at Minute Maid Park wearing hats, vests and sweatshirts is not very realistic. I've read that that would be hard to do and take a lot of memory, well, there are probably 5-6 minor league/spring training stadiums that people would gladly sacrifice for 5-6 closed roof versions of stadiums.
3- Cleaned up franchise menu/interface. It just seems very cluttered and isn't pleasant to the eye. In the manage roster section, I'd love to see a number at the top of the screen giving me a count of the players in that screen. For example, if I move on my roster to 'Right Fielders', I'd love the number of players in that specific category to be on the screen/tab. I hate moving players around on my roster and having to scroll and count the players in order to comply with the 25-man and 40-man limits. It would be so nice to tab over to the 'ACTIVE MLB' tab and immediately see that I have 26 guys on there, and know that I have to send one guy down.

These are very nit-picky, which is a testament to how great this game is. Except for the open/closed roof option, the others seem like easy changes to make. I really can't wait for MLB 13. I totally trust the developers and truly believe that they do their best on this game every year. I can't say that for any other sports game.

I would like a mlb franchise/season mode home page similar to 2k where you get headlines from around the league on that screen. You then can select a headline which opens the box score for that game or opens the players card if it's relating to a milestone/injury for example.

With this, they wouldn't be able to be in since they aren't licensed by the MLB with Majestic, those were made by Ebbets Field Flanels.

I apologize in advance if this has already been addressed, but has anyone else wondered why pine tar covers the bottom half of the bat? In real life it's more visible in the middle in-between the handle and the barrel. Just something that's kinda bugged me.. See pictures below as examples.

I think that they need to put in some kind of arguing!!!!
If MVP baseball comes out then there are going to be a lot of people going to buy that over the show because that and other small details. Other changes like changing the appearances and having more apparel or accessories to add to players. Having different kind of webbings in the gloves. Having actual name brand sunglasses or batting gloves or arm bands or cleats. Yes like other people are saying have more crowd reactions to big plays or postseason runs. Starting out in single-A for road to show. Having player aguing or manager arguing. It says on the show now that people can get ejected, but i have not seen one person get ejected besides getting ejected after hitting 4 batters in a row. Everybody having there customized batting or pitching stance. Getting new broadcasters cause you have had the same since like 09. Get joe buck, joe morgan, terry francona, orel hershiser, nomar garciaparra, aaron boone, rick sutcliffe any of these guys would be awesome. Just trying to give you guys some little things to change that would be great for the game. Also the catcher equipment looks horrible because the gear makes the catcher look fatter, MLB 2k12 showed you guys up on that one, because there catchers look real and the actually have real stances. Also put in some kind of jewelry like some phitens or silver or gold chains.

# 597 EnigmaNemesis @ 09/28/12 06:50 PM
MVP had arguing before they made rules against it.

There is a reason it was removed from 2K and The Show doesn't have it. MLB won't allow it.

One thing I would really like as far as options go there is really only one thing I can think of. I would like the option on the mound to pick whether I want to pitch from the stretch or the wind up.

I had I game last night where I was getting hammered and my confidence was gone. The bases were loaded and the pitcher I was using had a real short pitch { I use analog for everything} on the stretch. Well nobody was going to steal and I really just want to get the out and would have really liked to just pitch from a full windup to get my game back.

1- Diamond dynasty ... want to see career stats not just stats for a 5 gm season.. totally useless.. either show career stats on walkups or make the seasons longer..

---not a fan of the ranking system in DD .. to lose 20 points for a loss when your getting 2-5 a game is a bit harsh

---the option to play now in DD with Guess pitch off

2- Online ... for the past 2 yrs you have awarded the people who play 12 hours a day and have no jobs .. keep 1st inning quits gone and bring back the ranking system of 2010...

--- Have some pride and fix the bugs you create every year... The catcher freeze bug was happening in March and was never fixed.. Kudos on fixing rf assists... Although they still happen more then they should its way less then it was in March .. sucks that we have to deal with a new set of bugs every year.. hopefully now that the new physics engine is in place they wont have to change too much with the gameplay in 2013 creating less bugs
