MLB 13 The Show News Post

With the MLB 2K series all but confirmed to be dead, Kotaku's Owen Good has posted an article on what MLB 13 The Show must do to keep the fans of baseball gaming happy. It should be interesting, considering a simulation baseball game for the 360 doesn't look very likely.

Quote:
Your long slog through your career in Road to the Show makes the game's threadbare commentary painfully apparent. I think the world of Matt Vasgersian but he is shackled to an outdated commentary engine given to repetition and dead air. Dave Campbell's dialogue library is really showing its age, and a majority of his work sounds like Dave Campbell playing Dave Campbell. Eric Karros should be thanked for his service and sent home. The Show has world class visuals and a smooth, if minimalist, broadcast presentation. The commentary supporting it has not pulled its weight in years.

In your opinion, what does MLB 13 The Show need to do next year to satisfy your baseball gaming needs?

I doubt we'd see this but I'd like to see them release a software were we can edit our audio marker points on our computers so that we can just import them into the game without having to go through that hassle of doing it in game. Plus it would make it easier for us to upload our sounds of the show packs

I'm fairly certain this isn't possible with the current hardware, but it would be absolutely awesome if they could have the players wearing their regular uniforms for the All-Star Game.

It would open up so many great fantasy possibilities using classic rosters. Like having all-time greats, in their throwback unis, playing the current all-stars, in their contemporary unis, in a series alternating between old-time parks and modern-day parks.

Maybe in the next-gen hardware. Hopefully.

Yeah, that can not happen due to lack of memory. These next gen systems need to have 8GB minimum. Every generation you hear of memory limitations from developers, especially when RAM is pennies on the dollar compared to ten years ago.

Yet these console makers still fail to deliver. Memory is always the first to get cut to save on production costs, when IMO it should be on of the last things. If anything, not cut at all. It is too cheap now.

New here but thought I'd throw in my 2 cents.... for next years game I would like to see baggy uniforms, tighter uniforms and regular uniforms and another kind of pants style, kind of like the pants Derek Jeter wears. I hope necklaces are also added in next year's game and just like with batting helmets, different levels of pine tar on bats ranging from light, medium and heavy along with pine tar being put in either the middle of the bat, towards the top of the bat or the towards the bottom of the bat. Armbands and wristbands should be a little bit larger and maybe add a longer wrist tape and elbow bands. How about cold weather gear like 2k had also added to the game, rather than seeing everyone wear long sleeves in 50 degree weather or pitchers always wearing long sleeves at night in 60 degree weather. More hair styles/colors for created players. I'd also like to see the ability to change/add facial hair to regular players or add more hair to players heads. In stadiums with retractable roofs how about the roof closes. In Toronto it's almost always 50 or 40 degrees no matter what time of the year it is when I play there. Maybe the roof should close with that kind of weather. It should also rain at night. Pitchers shouldn't get hit by line drives as often as they do in the games I play. There should be a new broadcasting crew now. Maybe add the ESPN crew anyone else would be fine. Add a top 100 prospects list to Franchise mode. That'd be really cool with OSFM rosters. Pitchers shouldn't hit in any of the All-Star games. Add a Franchise re-locator or build a new stadium in your city. ASG voting should also be more realistic and by that I mean more votes and players who play on winning teams in big market cities also getting a ton of votes. Also the ability to fire your manager and resign players during the season. Minor league contracts and spring training invites should also be added. MVP's and Cy Young's shouldn't be chosen on who has the most HRs and wins. I had Robinson Cano batting over .350 with 36HR and 110RBI along with leading the league with hits and being the best fielding 2nd basemen in the AL while Miguel Cabrera hit .300 48HR and 120RBI and won the MVP over Cano.

1. Copy 2K's analog pitching.
2. Ratings for multiple position per player.
3. Copy 2K's commentary and presentation.
4. fielding mechanics (large circle for poor outfielders, small for good ones)
5. Hitters Eye
6. Deeper sliders (more than 10-point sliders).
7. MLB Today

Some good points, Money.

I don't see The Show abandoning its Analog pitching mechanic. I like both systems and don't really see a need for The Show to change. The only suggestion I have is to make hitting your target more unpredictable.

The commentary certains needs more lines. I like when Matt brings up things like 'today is Jackie Robinson Day' and says a few more things and then ... nothing. All that dead air is a shame because that's a perfect spot for Dave or Eric to chime in with something related to what Matt just announced.

MLB Today would be cool, but I'd rather see an NBA Live 10 Rewind system where you can go back and play previous dates on the calendar and try and change the outcome. The problem with MLB Today is that the lineups/pitching matchups were never 100% accurate. It would make more sense to have the mode run a day behind the actual calendar so you could have the true lineups/pitchers each team used.

That's my biggest issue I think.
I played both games last year and I just found myself liking some of the dynamics of 2K more than the Show.
I recognize all the incredible things MLB does, but I just loved the Analog pitching, hitters eye and multiple defensive ratings.

I wish I could merge the two, but I suppose that statement's been said for several competing games over the years.

Many of you would say that fixing the gameplay or bugs is more important than adding new features and you are right but i would also like to see

1. Commentary - The commentators were boring in Mlb 12 the show. I want them to talk to each other and not sound like they are reading a script. There are no reactions to whats happening in the game. A great catch or a hr on a tie game feels like it was not a big deal. I also want them to talk about the days before or any news around the league. All they do is just call the plays like balls ,strikes and outs.

2. Stats - There needs to be way more stats overlays. I keep seeing the same overlays over and over in every single game (Wins and stolen base)

3. It would be cool if it rained harder.

4. Rtts feels like Im just playing an exhibition game but just controlling one single player. I want to be part of my rtts and feel like i am the player and not just play game after game.

1. Stadium builder- hate playing as the Rays in dark and dingy Trop.
2. Milb deal to get more prospects involved, don't want to wait for Knight to create his awesome rosters or do it myself, yes I'm lazy
3. More classic or old stadiums, not a Tiger fan but like Tiger Stadium, and would like to use Miwaukee County Stadium too, many chilly April nights spent there.

Even though I already absolutely love this game and play it year round there are a few things that could really take it to a whole new level.

1. Improved presentation
Implement ESPN or MLB Network perhaps? I'm not sure how the licensing is for that stuff right now
2. Improved commentary
Maybe introduce new members to the booth to give it a new life, and also more in-depth, continued commentary
3. Overhaul of Franchise complete with coach creation
Franchise feels a bit outdated to me, I really love the daily headline ticker on the main franchise screen in 2k, really makes it that much more immersive. Also, I'd would go crazy over a nightly or weekly recap show like the one in NFL 2k5 or the crappy one in Madden but done to a much better degree. Lastly, I'd love to be able to be a coach like in NCAA Football where you can get fired and have to find a new job in you don't succeed.

Why are people still asking for different commentary? One of the things about baseball and the presentation of it is that the game is so slow that you have to have a narrative for every at bat. There just isn't that much more to talk about on a video game, especially since the commentary is canned and the number of tracks are limited. Nobody will ever be satisfied with baseball commentary.

I think the main thing is that people just want to hear new voices, but I agree with you that video game commentary will never be on par with the real thing, unless the PS4 (or PS100, who knows how long it would take if it is even possible) is able to synthesize a voice and make it's own commentary in real time. At that point though I would be scared that my playstation would be smart enough to strangle me in the middle of the night lol

Actually, this is exactly part of the problem with the commentary. You DON'T have to have a narrative of every single event in baseball, and part of what makes commentary annoying is when they ramble on about every single thing, often making irrelevant and inaccurate comments about it. If the commentators in The Show simply spoke less, that'd be an improvement in itself.

I really think that where the Show succeeds others fail.

The more control and ability to edit/customize/and bring back memories the more people will enjoy it.

The Show truly let's you customize the feel of the game and how you want to play it. If you want to relive your youth you have the ability to use old rosters. If you want to play as a general manager and progress certain players through your system you can do that too. If you want to make yourself and live out your own dream you can do that as well.

I believe if The Show were to allow more options with rosters (import from one year to the next) customizable leagues, old stadiums and the ability to create uniforms or expansion teams nothing would ever be able to touch it.

Other games like Madden 13 for example although fun to play, take more control away from the user each year. In Madden 13 you can't even edit players, little own forget about a "roster vault," heck not even importing draft classes.

What The Show gets is that people do not want to be told what they can and can't do in a game. It's a fantasy/dream/time occupier/escape all rolled into one. Let's face it the reason we play baseball on a tv screen is that most of us at one point or another have been told you are not good enough to play anymore. It's really the only way to still play the game you grew up playing.

This is why The Show succeeds and others fail, they continue to put more control in the users hands and not take it away. Keep it up, I enjoy trying to relive my youth 40 minutes a night after I get home from work for 12 hours and before I have to take out the trash!

I love the franchise mode. I play all 162 games for multiple seasons but there are some things I would like to see fixed/changed/added.

1) Tighter budgets for teams, It's too easy to make money and have it available to spend on multiple stadium, coach, scout, player upgrades.

2)Scouting needs a big upgrade. Simply picking guys and having their scouting report unlocked is boring. Maybe having to run players through miny drills, ie. hitting, fielding, pitching etc to unlock more information about them.

2) a. Scouting reports need a big fix. With young players they are always talked poorly about because their ratings are low. They should say something different and perhaps more positive based on their age. Also potential is really the only thing you have to pay attention to if you want to know who to draft or not. It shouldn't be this predictable.

2) b. Young players/ prospects should have more variation to their stats. Also some certain stats should be close to maxed out depending on their age.

3) The addition of rainouts with subsequent double headers would be a nice touch to the game. Then maybe with a team day off you can choose to rest players, maybe run them through extra drills, b.p. etc, to give a short boost in stats for the next game or two.

4) The ability to negotiate contracts mid-season.

I would like to see players fall if they collide instead of just dodging each other.

How about throws that pull the 1st baseman off the bag and a swipe tag attempt?

These would all be great additions to franchise mode.
I would love to see these.

If I might add

1.Instead of tighter budgets....I'm much rather be able to edit budgets....both to start the franchise and any time during it. Both payroll and team accessory budgets. I'd also like to see payroll only include player salaries.

2. I think you mean ratings....and yes....I agree. But more than that...I'd like to see the rates of the different ratings progress much differently for each attribute. For instance...my LF is a power hitting prospect but K's a lot and doesn't hit that well for average. I'd like to see his power ratings grow by 10-15 for a few years but his contact by 2-3 ...and his vision/disc the same or drop a few points. Fielding should only progress if I put training time into it...and speed should be constant until it eventually declines.(baserunning instinct can always progress though...either on it's own or if I as the manager put training time into it.)
ALL of these should have some sort of variable for it NOT to work or to even regress. It SHOULD NOT be a given due to potential. I understand why it's that way now....I just hope it changes

3. From what I gather.....I don't think rainouts are a top list priority for the team....I'd like to see them...but I don't think we will.

4. DEFINITELY ....it adds a bit of strategy to franchise mode.

Finally....scouting....and the way WE see player ratings outside of the editor.
There needs to be a "fog of war" built in. I really don't want to know the true rating of a player. I don't want my scouts or coaches to always be right about them either. I want to have a reason to fire my scout...look for a new one....same with coaches......and I want to eventually evaluate the player on my own....HOW?...by his performance.
If my scout and my coach are both telling me..."this guy can't miss" ...but he hits .220 with 5 homers for 3 straight seasons. YOU'RE FIRED!...and sorry Player X, but McDonald's is your new employer.

Oh..and if I screw up as GM...I want the owner to tell me I'M FIRED.(or not offered a new contract)
That should be put back in!

I'd love to see the Online League customization options make their way into offline Season and Franchise modes.

My only issue with the current short season option is that you can't choose the amount of teams, alignment, series setup, and season length (months).

What I'd love to be able to do is have a 10 to 30 game season played in 3-game series, spread out over 6 months with 10 or 15 teams. You can make all of this happen with the online leagues, but not offline.

# 580 Bobhead @ 09/24/12 10:55 AM
I get why rain delays would be a problem, but rainouts? Just a simple message saying your game was postponed... and a doubleheader in a subsequent day would go a long way in adding excitement to franchise mode. Theres nothing like a doubleheader against a rival, or late in the season, and the extra strain it puts on players just makes things more interesting on the management side.
