MLB 13 The Show News Post

With the MLB 2K series all but confirmed to be dead, Kotaku's Owen Good has posted an article on what MLB 13 The Show must do to keep the fans of baseball gaming happy. It should be interesting, considering a simulation baseball game for the 360 doesn't look very likely.

Quote:
Your long slog through your career in Road to the Show makes the game's threadbare commentary painfully apparent. I think the world of Matt Vasgersian but he is shackled to an outdated commentary engine given to repetition and dead air. Dave Campbell's dialogue library is really showing its age, and a majority of his work sounds like Dave Campbell playing Dave Campbell. Eric Karros should be thanked for his service and sent home. The Show has world class visuals and a smooth, if minimalist, broadcast presentation. The commentary supporting it has not pulled its weight in years.

In your opinion, what does MLB 13 The Show need to do next year to satisfy your baseball gaming needs?

Stop having players on the 40 man automatically come up in September. I have some prospects on the 40 man roster, but that doesn't always mean they're ready for a call up. Have there be a notice "You can now call up players on the 40 man roster" and let us pull up the players we want.

Hopefully we can condense all of these and present them to SCEA when they're ready to start taking feedback for 13.

Gameplay

- I feel like the AI pitcher pitches my pitcher too carefully; I get quite a few walks with my pitcher at the plate, which wouldn't happen in real life. I'm not saying the AI shouldn't try to get a chase on 0-2 or 1-2, but I'd like to see them go after my pitchers with fastballs in the zone more.

- Fielding and throwing needs to have more weight and momentum behind it, especially in the infield. I see too many double plays, especially from the AI batters, and I think this is because of quick little "snap" throws from infielders, which are hard to pull off in reality.

- Another reason for too many AI double plays is that the AI batters don't seem to lay off pitches low in the zone with a man on first.

- Outfielder logic needs to be changed so that they concede more singles instead of making a risky dive. Dives should be saved for players with truly exceptional fielding ratings and/or when the game is on the line.

- Wild pitches need to be worked into the pulse pitching system. This would be controlled by the User Pitch Consistency slider.

- Change the bunting system so that you have a chance to pull it back earlier on a ball.

- Sometimes I cause my player to drag bunt after a really slow curveball comes in, when I actually wanted him to swing.

Rosters

- I know this is unlikely, but I'd LOVE for SCEA to get full player licensing for the minor leagues, especially AAA and AA. If every player in AAA and AA had his name and likeness in each year's game, that would virtually guarantee that any player that gets called up in real life during that season will also be available to you in the game. EA's FIFA has thousands of players, so this is certainly possible.

- Show the players in their teams' uniforms in the player edit screen; in addition to looking better, this would take the guess work out of remembering what your team's "Color 1" "Color 2" and "Color 3" are when doing shoes and gear.

- Add some empty roster slots so that free agents can be signed without swapping a player.

- Any player who has ever been a SCEA licensed player should be in the game, even if they've missed a year (Moyer, Chad Tracy, Manny Corpas, Jeff Clement, etc.)

- I'd love it if some sort of system could be developed for player ratings edits that would calibrate the ratings to the stat yields that player would likely produce over a season with those numbers. So, for example, if a player has:

RC: 87
LC: 63
RP: 56
LP: 52
VIS: 67
DIS: 73

, then the simulation program would give you numbers like : .273 16 HR, 14% K, 9% BB, etc.

- Create/edit managers and coaches
- Necklaces and more catching gear

Get rid of the Guess Pitch and Guess Location. You can "Guess" in your head.

- Improved commentary. Most people agree on this one.
- Stadium updates. Center and right center at Progressive Field are completely outdated. Marlins Park outfield wall is not dark green, it's bright green. Etc.
- I know it'd be hard and almost impossible to do, but when they set out their weekly rosters, if they had the updated player and stadium music automatically with it and it updated as the sounds change.
- Also, one thing that I noticed, is that even though Seattle, Miami, Milwaukee, Houston and Arizona all have retractable roofs, you could only play with the roof open. I'd love to have the choice to play with the roofs open or closed.
- If you could play starting pitcher warm-up music like at real stadiums. You can do it for relievers in "Sounds of the Show," but not starting pitchers.
- Lastly, if they had updated prospects with the weekly rosters. This would make the franchise mode absolutely amazing because you can know who the top prospects are and trade for or play with the top prospects of today in a few years of franchise.

Just my personal opinion and stuff I'd like. But the game is great as it is and I fully intend on purchasing the game next year.

Hoping to see some upgrades to pitch type and pitch trajectories/movement, especially now that some of the well known guys are using pitches that aren't represented in the game. I would like to see the split-change, shuuto/reverse slider, and the cutter/slider hybrid added as pitch types, and pitches with more movement in general so we can have accurate representations of Felix's change, Brandon League's splitter, Chris Sale's fastball, etc.

This can not happen due to licensing issues.

The commentary needs to be tweaked if not changed. How about having more of a bantar (see Michael Kay and Paul O'neill).

Have them talk about up coming promotions or talk about the promotions on the day they happen.

I would love to go back to 2003-2004 when they had the national anthem before the game, and put in take me out to the ballgame for the seventh inning.

Opening day and all star game announcements. One of my favorite part of these days is when they announce each players.

Have managers get ejected.
Bring back the brawls

Have the weather play more of a factor (i.e. sweat in the summer)

How about letting us know about a nagging injuries before the game like a hamstring or sore shoulder so we can rest the player or pitcher and use spot starters.

How about fast warm ups so if a pitcher starts to get into trouble the reliever can come in no problem

Have pregames like madden does.

Better animations for walk offs and clinches.

Add champange for clinches

Do a madden esque type of celebration when you win the world series the presentation of the trophy the parade meeting the pres and in franchise mode getting the rings

Less incredible diving catches and more bloopers.

And I think having a Show moments would be cool

I'll leave the gameplay suggestions to people who know better than me but for presentation;

Commentary: (not gonna beat a dead horse on this one)

A 'Virtual' Network: I think it's time to change the whole "MLB on the Show" presentation. I know one of the Devs threw around some BS about how they have to constantly remind people they are playing the show (despite the fact it's plastered around the entire ballpark) it just sounds so odd. I think it's time to do a "EASN" style network such as SCEA Sports or the Sony Sports Network or something. Would really help suck you into the presentation IMO.

Oh and this doesn't relate to just the Show but people who keep asking for ESPN Presentation in non EA sports games, ESPN and EA Sports have an exclusive agreement till 2020. It just gets frustrating reading this request in almost every thread.

Overlays: The Show has made a huge leap in this since the earlier days of next gen but it can be improved so much more. Taking a page out of 2K's book would really help here. Also fun little things like "The following is presented in HD and 5.1 Surround Sound (where available)" and perhaps after coming back from commercial "Baseball on the SCEA Network is brought to you by, Sony..."

In Game Studio Updates: NCAA Football 13 laid down the foundation for what could be a truly great and immersive feature for dynasties and franchises of the future. A quick look in to a division rival or a no no would be amazing. Again this would work better with a Virtual Network presentation as Matt (or who ever may replace him could say) "And we have a game break with ... in the SCEA Studio..."

Postseason:

The World Series is one of the most amazing spectacles in the world of sport. The hype and intensity to Game 1 is immense and no video game has been able to replicate that. My suggestion for the presentation for Game 1 is...

1. Have a video introduction talking about World Series past and mentioning the two teams that have made it to the fall classic, maybe showing MLB Archive footage of earlier appearances in the World Series.

2. Player introductions. This isn't that hard, surely you can do this.

3. National Anthem (in fact this should be added to Opening Day, All Star Game and the 4th of July) Sacrifice your budget for a track during the menu and pay a star or stars to sing it.

And when the World Series is over, a 1 minute cut scene is not really a reward for the all the effort the player has put into the season, it should have MVP Trophy presentation, WS Trophy Presentation and perhaps a wrap up from the studio (like 2K did with their NCAA Basketball series)

I know people will say "I'd just skip over this" but I have always found this to be a selfish reason, so what if you'll skip over it, at least it's there for those with the patience to watch it.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Make proper grass that looks decently real and improve lighting and realism. Less jaggies and 1080p native would not hurt but that is a pipe dream.

World Series atmosphere all the way.

It would be nice if in future game at-bats it shows everything a player has done in that game.

For example: Ryan Howard 3-4, HR, 2 2B, 3 RBI.
Or what they show after a RTTS game, how you mark the scorecard (diamond, line to show how far they got, etc...)

The thing I would like to see improved most involves stat tracking and the player pages.

First I can't believe how limited the stat tracking is for previous years in the player cards. We should be able to see key stats like steals, runs, walks, holds, whip, etc.

Other things I would like added to the player page are previous awards won. It'd be nice to count the number of All star appearances, batting titles, WS wins, etc in a player's career. I would also really like to see a transactions history of the player. It would be pretty beneficial to check out a player and see what teams he has played for, or what trades he was a part of in the past.

Body Sliders are a must, Tattoos are a plus

# 515 Scooter3 @ 09/05/12 10:21 PM
Instead of using sliders for attributes like power and contact give some of us an option to use players stats to achieve the same thing.

Ab......H........Hr...... Sb......So......Ba......Slg
607...185.....37........12......68.....305....555. ....etc...............

And let the computer figure it out. It seems simple and straight forward.

Here are my suggestions, definitely things I'd like to see:

1. Count generation. One pitch at bats were on Earl Weaver baseball. This could revolutionize the way franchise mode is played. This would have to be done with intelligence though. Imagine playing every game in a season, for more than one season. It just is not feasible if a game takes an hour.

2. Deeper stat tracking. The stats are there, all they have to do is log them permanently.

3. Draftee talent. This should be easy to improve. Just make more A's and every now and then have some of them programmed to fast-track to baseball. To get it right though, if may be necessary for a Madden-like approach to draft classes, rather then have them generated. I don't know.

4. Let us work for that hispanic talent. Look at all the hispanics in MLB? Where do they come from? Are they all drafted, or is there another method to get them.

5. Allow us to change teams in franchise.

They had one-pitch mode on High Heat, I loved that feature.

There are plenty of A's - in every test franchise that I've ran, I have been able to draft 2-3 A's every year (including the first year) and a few of them have been close to major league ready. Too many A's lead to overblown stats and trades, the league becomes too good and superstars are traded for prospects 1-1. If the potential system is reworked to include A potentials who actually become busts then more A's wouldn't be a problem.

The rest are very good suggestions though and I would also like to see the same things make their way into this game.

Love this game to death. I don't think there is a more complete sports game on the market. With that said, there is one thing that has always annoyed me about the Show. I didn't see this in the thread after searching through a bunch of pages so hopefully I don't repeat anything. I wish they would allow you to put in a pinch hitter before the guy you are pinch hitting for is actually up. Just like you can "schedule a pitcher," I wish you could schedule a pinch hitter. If there are no outs and the pitcher is up next in a tight ball game and I want to pinch hit, I have to wait for the broadcast team to read the same line about how they are surprised they are leaving the pitcher in and then put the pinch hitter in. It sort of takes the realism out. No big deal though, just my two cents. Ball boys would be kind of cool too, along the first and third base lines and in the dugouts, but whatever, thats just something random to add to the realism. It is completely unnecessary.
