NCAA Football 13 News Post

We recently had a chance to interview NCAA Football 13 Designer Christian McLeod and Producer Ben Haumiller.

All questions were submitted, but not all of them could be answered at this time, due to coverage in the coming weeks. This interview only focuses on the sights and sounds of NCAA Football 13.

Quote:
Will we hear crowds reacting correctly in given situations, for example on 3rd downs, crucial plays, TD's, interceptions, fumbles, big hits, etc.?

Yes. The crowd content and system is an area where you will hear some great improvements. Based on the recordings that were done and the new crowd mix implemented by our Audio Director, Aaron Janzen, you will be hearing the crowd swells react appropriately throughout the game.

What about playing in large stadiums, compared to smaller ones? Adding on to that question, will we hear much of a difference between full stadiums vs. stadiums with smaller crowds?

Yes, you will notice a difference between these stadiums. We made an effort to record assets at small, medium, and large stadiums throughout last season. We even attended a high school game to ensure our crowds sound as authentic as possible depending on where you play.

Will crowds vary as far as regular season games, rivalry games, bowl games, and neutral site games? Speaking of neutral site games, will the crowd react to both teams, instead of recognizing the "home" team exclusively?

Yes, the crowd behavior is driven contextually, and the type of game being played is part of that. We have the ability to drive different crowd reactions based on home / neutral / away.

Overall, I thought the interview just answered a lot of questions that were addressed in the webcast. I'm still wondering why they're ducking the trophy presentation question though.

Also, I noticed something in the interview that sounded...intriguing, at best.

Now, I may just be reading too much into that, but it caught my eye the first time I read it, and it got me wondering...

Overall, I thought the interview was good, even though they ducked some questions. I'm still wondering who the mystery commentator will be, though I'm betting it's Rece Davis. All eyes on 4/17 now...
Yeah, but they said the SAME thing last year

The best part is if you go back and look, audio was a huge focus last year and I even remember a sample being played. When the game came out it was worse than ever. I can't speak for the gameplay, but the audio was praised before and was still ****.

Hail West Virginia

I swear, it gets so old hearing about 85% of the users on her constantly bashing EA and posting all this negative garbage every single time they post. Jesus Christ, give it a rest already. Some of us, contrary to popular belief, actually enjoy this game for what it is - oh the madness!. Get over yourselves. If you hate the game so much, why even come in here and waste time out of your life to bitch about a $60 video game? It is incredible the amount of negative people we have in here, and it is no wonder that the devs hardly interact with us anymore. I, for one, really enjoy what EA gives us each year and I look forward to the the news coming out each year on the new game. Call me naive, but I am an optimistic person, I live my life this way, and believe it or not, I have a lot of positive results from it. Maybe you guys should try it sometime...i promise, it won't hurt.

I think I've lost all excitement for NCAA 13. All this "new" crap is just fluff. Its gonna be a disappointing July. How about EA goes out & hire people that actually CARE about college football & authenticity!! This "Oh, it didnt make it in this year" bull is driving me to the edge.

Honestly, and I mean this with upmost respect to everyone's wishlist for all the small nuances...crowd noise fixes and commentary and noises in general are nice...but let me find out no added pass interference or even penalties as a whole being tuned and no special teams being fixed...and I mean formations, returns, blocks, fakes, AI at least TRYING a coffin corner...then i will be done, worse yet I will lobby for everyone I know to not get it either. I am sure the Texas cowgirls are very nice...along with USC song girls...but if that made it and penalties and special teams didn't...done.

Not sold on this game at all. The gameplay improvements need to be SUBSTANTIAL for me to purchase this game.

The way games are broadcast on TV there are always tons of stat overlays and everything. I see NO REASON why starting line-ups or a coaches record can't be shown during the pre-game at the least.

They have the ESPN license they need to add the ESPN bottom line as well as the starting line-up package that ESPN shows every single game. This game should look more like a ESPN game than a EA sports game if that makes any sense lol.

It is good news though that the audio and crowd noise has been improved.

A lot of people have went that route but is that the end? So just don't buy it and that will solve the problems? Like my $60 would make EA's profits shift even the slightest bit to now my voice is being heard through my wallet. And what about the people who's favorite sport is college football, grew up enjoying the old NCAA Football games and have no other college football game to turn to because EA cornered the market? I guess they're just S.O.L.

No one is preventing you from enjoying the game or expressing that you enjoy the game. If you look at these boards at the posts that are positive about the game, those people aren't bashed or attacked for saying they enjoy it. If they enjoy it that's great for them. But as you can already tell the majority on here are far from satisfied.

If you don't want to see so many unhappy people voicing their feelings and opinions, i don't know if this is the right place. Understand we want this game to be better, but when it comes to listening to them in the interviews and seeing what they are coming up with, we've all seen and heard it before and we're just tired of the same thing... try to sell us on all this glitter but fail on the substance and then the game comes out and we need patch after patch and all the sudden they disappear until its time to do it over again next year.

that a great point and half of the reason i'm not optimistic about things like i used to be years ago. I've seen & heard the song and dance. I don't buy into those "last minute additions or changes" or hope that things can be added in the next 2 months. That rarely ever happens. And i've learned that the things they enjoy talking about the most and the things they mention the most and the things they have no problem going into detail tells me those are the focuses of the game.

Ask them about camera angles, NFL stadiums, teambuilder, or something that they either didn't add or work on much and they'll try to shy away from it as much as possible or avoid the subject altogether. Ask them about team entrances, the sky changing or mascots/cheerleaders and they can talk for days.

That list of the back of the box features are going to be what you hear from now till release. So get ready to listen about entrances, lighting, crowd sounds/studio analyst, passing, heisman mode and road to glory.
Excellent post that explains alot of the sentiment of posters who are skeptical of NCAA..It's an ongoing cycle..

Think back to College Hoops (gets old having to use this game as a reference, but it really had it all). There could be a couple of screens as they are if you watch a game on television.

Screen 1:
QB: Player X, FR 75 OVR HB: Player Y, SR 88 OVR FB: Player Z JR 78 OVR WR1: Player A, SO 80 OVR WR2: Player B, JR 82 OVR TE: Player C, SR 80 OVR

Screen 2:
Offensive line guys...

Just think to any game you watch on tv when they discuss the starters. It doesn't even have to feature their pictures, just names and info like above.

Just to piggy back to jerseysuave's excellent post...what makes us all so mad is that Ben and co continue to promote all these cheesy features that end up being broken in the end...they leave out what's been missing for FIVE YEARS now (special teams, penalties) and always say "next year, or we didn't have time during this cycle...but hey! Look at half made 3d grass and revamped mascot mashup!" Or some nonsense. What really gets me is the fact that they lie to us and promote all this glitter only to put out a subparagraph game...and then the next year they come out and say what crap their product was the year before and that they are listening to us and voila! 3d USC songirls?...what? Seriously? They get 10 months to add and improve gameplay, graphics and ect...I wonder what would actually happen if upper brass held their feet to the fire and actually work 5 days a week 8am to 6pm all the way to release day on just ONE cycle...imagine the work that could get done. It's called maximizing the team time...and if they would bust their hump right just one stinking cycle, then they could coast a bit like I am sure they doing at the start of every cycle. I have a feeling they got it backwards though...vacation and screwing off first, THEN crunch time all this nonsense in 3 months and use the excuse, "we ran out of time" Stop taking vacations and 4 day weekends ncaa...you haven't earned it yet...the boys at SCEA...THEY earn their time off.

Thats what particularly irritates me regarding camera angles, penalties and the chain gang..I have listened for 5 years how each year they were going to look at getting camera angles and the chain gang in the fame and each year it's the same story and I truly think thats what people have a problem with...iF You cant get at least the fundamental parts of the game right with this engine then add on to the immersion factor by adding camera angles, and try to simulate an actual NCAA broadcast..NBA 2k and the show are by no means flawless games but they pull you in with the immersion factor and the little nuances that you see in a basketball and baseball game..truly if EA just worked on broadcast presentation and addded little things like penalties working to the game a bunch of dissatisfied posters would be satisfied.. its fluff like cheerleaders and 3D grass that only works with replays that kind of tick people off..on top of that the game is released with gamebreaking bugs that take 2 patches and 3 months to fix. This is an ongoing thing and at some point you can,t blame people for being fed up...EVERYBODY wants a better game thats the bottom line especially in these forums if we didnt there wouldnt be as many passionate complaints that are voiced....

Their counter to that ... "Well, we added Heisman mode! Plus we added new stadium noises!!!"

# 75 BlingBling19 @ 04/08/12 12:52 PM
I noticed it said a couple stadiums got a full visual makeover or something. How come ALL OF THE COLLEGE stadiums didn't get this same treatment??

Probably too much work on EA's party for that to happen

With all the talk of "Were looking into it" or "Something we want to add in the future" im convinced theres just like 8 of them working in a office playing paper basketball or something

I don't see why they couldn't use the exact code and animations from Madden. All they would need to do is add some new graphics to it and they could do the exact same thing. I guess they don't reuse code across games like they should. Either their coding standards are terrible and they can't just plug in different variables or they don't want to do so.

# 79 spartyon6686 @ 04/08/12 09:59 PM
They didn't even notice that MSU is getting new scoreboards. If the green is still off on the jerseys and the field isn't right no way am I buying this game.

# 80 HammerOfGod @ 04/09/12 05:41 AM
Thanks for not changing a damn thing about the visuals EA! Same terrible faces, same terrible dread length only on specific faces, which means no adjustable hair types. Player models are exactly the same, you still can't get some teams's jersey colors right.

EA has phoned this one in guys. Do not buy this crap. I don't need to hear thing one about the animations or "improved" passing system. Way to waste a year of development EA. Good job!
